Things have been pretty calm around the Quarantine for a month or two, since the behemoth herd was shut down - aside from a bit of emotional trauma brought on by the holograms that swarmed the city last month, everything's been pretty smooth sailing through Sampremi season. And of course, as anyone who's been in the Quarantine for more than a few months knows, nothing is ever that easy.
With spring rolling in and winter rolling out, there's been a lot of rain on the moon. Usually, that's not a really big problem, since the Quarantine historically doesn't have a lot of problems with flooding. This year, though, the water is rising exponentially, much faster than it has in almost the entire known history of the city. It starts to get noticeable around the 20th, with the water levels rising over a foot, and it keeps going faster and faster as the days move on. By the first of the month, the water has risen to flood out the two city blocks on either side of the river, forcing hundreds of people from their homes. The problem is even worse near the point that the river exits the city walls and starts winding its way into the Abandoned City, with the flood washing away many of the ramshackle buildings in the area and shorting out the laser fences in the area, leaving the city vulnerable to attack by water.
This month's mission? Form teams of explorers to head either up or down the river, braving the dangers from flooding and whatever monsters might be attracted to all the noise and panic, to try to find the source of the highly unusual flooding.
MOD NOTE: I will be playing around with the cause and fallout of the flooding throughout this and the next TDM. Feel free to have characters explore and find various options for what might be causing it, and if you have a good idea in a thread, send a link via PM to the mod account, and I'll see how many ideas I can weave into the solution!
Remember that bit in the last prompt about the monsters attracted by the noise and panic in the city, and also about the fences being compromised around where the river exits the city? Well, that turns out to be a really big problem throughout the end of March and until the flooding is resolved. Some new 'residents' will start showing up, crawling out of the river with scaly grins - giant crocodiles and carnivorous toads, and nasty giant bugs, oh my! Almost any amphibious, reptilian, bug, or water monster you can think of will be clambering up the banks of the river, scooting through the mud, and hunting anyone who ventures too close to their overflowing homes.
The city will be making a general call out to any fight-capable people who are willing to form temporary reserve units of the Perimeter Guard to help patrol the edges of the rising water and keep the monsters at bay. Join up with these, fight them on your own, or just keep away from the water. The choice is up to you.
It's not just fighters that can help with the disaster - there's also a citywide call out for volunteers to help out with disaster relief for the hundreds of people who have been displaced from their riverside homes. Whether you're commanding magic or science or just a hand to help out, your help will be more than welcome.
Volunteers can help gather and distribute clothing, non-perishable food, and other supplies to displaced residents; they can help cook for the large soup kitchens and buffet breakfasts; they can help knock together and furnish temporary shelter for victims. There is also a call for any residents who may have extra space in their homes to house victims of the disaster, so whether your character is displaced or offering a helping hand, there's plenty to do around the Quarantine.
While the disaster isn't exactly conducive to celebration, most of the merchants participating in the Sampremi street market (some nsfw content at the link) are doing a philanthropic spin on their usual booths. Most of the booths are offering free food and household items or clothing to residents who have been displaced by the flooding, offering free games, and accepting donations to help support the victims. They've also cleared out space in the market for victims and volunteers to rest and recuperate.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!
hera syndulla | star wars rebels
[ Well, at least this is something. She can't fly her ship, she can't lead her squadron, she can't fight the Empire, but at least she can kick some lizard butt? Or something. Hera isn't being too picky about what she takes her aggression out on right now, honestly.
She fires her blaster at a big bug, sending it careening into the mud created by all the rain. Then a drop-kick right into the mandibles. Clearly, she knows her way around a fight. Unfortunately, as focused as she is on the bug, she doesn't seem to have noticed the lizard climbing up out of the water behind her. Maybe help a girl out? ]
B; Relieve yourself;
[ It doesn't take much to rope Hera into the humanitarian aid side of things, either. She might be a little prickly, but she's not about to stand by and watch while innocent people suffer. She's seen enough of that for one lifetime. So here she is, stopping by merchant stalls and offices and maybe even residential neighborhoods, door-to-door. She stands out in this crowd, with her green skin and head-tails. You can stare all you want, as long as you offer up some canned goods for the cause. ]

Eleven | Stranger Things
[Eleven is very much able to take care of herself most of the time. She's also just a little girl, 13 years-old. She's soaking wet and staring up at a giant crocodile, its teeth in a grin. She feels a thrill of terror run through her, heart beating fast.
She glances around quickly and spots a decently big rock. And then she's staring at it hard, with a dangerous look in her eyes. The rock rises from the ground, floating in the air, and then she whips her head back toward the crocodile. The rock follows, getting lodged in the creature's eye. It thrashes a little, and then it's really angry. Her eyes get round, a drop of blood trickling from her nose.]
b. prompt iii
[Being flooded out of your home pretty much stinks. Eleven bursts into the volunteer shelter, soaked through and breathing hard as she pushes the door shut. Her hair curls at the edges where it's wet. She wanders in, feeling out of place as she looks around. She sees a buffet and makes a beeline for it, silently grabbing a plate and putting food on it. Living on your own isn't very easy, she's come to realize.
Later, she's eaten her last spoonful of soup. She's sitting in the corner, where she can observe everyone, her hair starting to dry in curls. She looks up as you pass by, curious eyes meeting yours. Suddenly, she speaks up.]
Do you have space?
[She means in your home. For her.]

Shuri | Black Panther
[New or not, Shuri is unable to sit by and do nothing while the city floods. She springs into action and finds a way where she can help. She doesn't have a lot of materials on her. She has her bracelet and the weapons she had used when helping her brother but there seems to be more than a few labs and technical locations where she can pull together some materials.
She works quickly, using the next six hours to assemble tools that cold help. Shuri starts by dismantling one of the beads in her bracelet in order to extract the vibranium in it and use it over a wide collection of items. Her creations range from high-tech grappling hooks to tasers that won't break in water or electrocute its user and can be used against the creatures swimming through the greats. She also has sensors sent up in each device, that allow her to collect the data for future use, and ways to communicate with each user through her bracelet.
She can be found tinkering in one of the tents but when she's done she calls to the nearest person walking by.]
You. [She points to someone who's clearing getting ready to go out into the fray.] Come here. You'll need this. It'll help.
[Shuri will quickly run out of materials and ways to help but she hopes that her handful of devices are able to make a difference.]
[ PROMPT iii - DISASTER RELIEF ]
[Once she's finished with her first task she finds more mundane ways to help. Shuri loves technology, it's a part of who she is, but she knows that a people need more than fancy gadgets to be great. They need to be able to pull together and lend a hand wherever the work is.
She spends the rest evening and well into the night passing out food and blankets. Shuri can't offer places to stay but she calculates the flood areas and pin points safe areas of the city to help residence find somewhere to wait out the chaos. Her own bed is in some communal place though she doesn't feel right leaving these people with no place to sleep.
Shuri works until she's exhausted and then grabs a quick nap behind the booth she's helping at. After that she'll get back to lending a hand.]

Ava Orlova | Red Vengeance | Riverview CRAU
[She's... back. It's not really surprising after everything that happened, but it feels like so much more time has passed than really has. She dresses a little smarter, a little less like a street orphan, long hair pulled back into a ponytail. She doesn't really have a plan, anywhere to go, so she stops by the coffee shop. There are names and faces, people she probably owes explanations to, but that's for later.
For the moment, she just buys a cup of coffee and a cherry danish and sits by the window, watching the flow of people. She wonders if the people she knew are all still here, wonders how many of them are mad at her for leaving. She does want to at least check in on them, and there are a couple she feels like she owes apologies to.
She doesn't know what to do about Natasha. She pretends that things are easy, a smile at someone that happens to look her way. Maybe it's a joke, maybe she's serious, it's hard to tell:]
You come here often?
ii. lizard hunting
[When the chaos happens, as it always inevitably does, Ava lets herself be drawn into it. She doesn't answer the Perimeter Guard's call, but she helps.
It's uncomfortable, feels like ashes on her tongue. She doesn't wear a costume now, but she's there helping people. Putting herself between the threat and everything else. To anyone that's seen her fight before, there's a shift to it. She's more vicious, but mostly more reckless. Before she had two swords, but now one is shorter, more a sort of curved long knife. Her eyes still glow bright blue.
The way energy bites through scales and flesh is heavy on the air. Blood wet on her fingers, and it's all twisted in her chest. Before there was less weight to it, but she can't help thinking that she's a monster, too. Where's the difference, really? Scales, compared to energy that dances blue and electric. She used to think there was a difference between monsters and people, now she's not sure where she fits on that line.]
Hey. You okay over there? [Her voice is low, quiet as she calls to the person she'd caught a glimpse of as the lizard lunged for a shadow. She doesn't want to call anymore attention than they have to.]
iii. disaster relief
[She volunteers to help with setting up shelters. It's quiet work, which she likes, but it's raining, which isn't the most conducive to construction projects. But with the flooding, there's not much choice: they need additional shelters, and they need them fast. She even uses her powers as she can, far less shy about it than she's been before. She's still shaky on her control, but a little bit better now, enough to be useful in this sort of situation.
And she might be quiet, but she does check in on other people from time to time, pausing to offer someone a bottle of water. Her bright red hair makes her pretty easy to pick out, and there's something effortless to how she moves. She doesn't explicitly take charge, but she's there if people need her, working on getting the roof into place as the rain pounds on corrugated metal.]
iv. wildcard!
[Hit me up with whatever. Instead of settling into the residential building, she'll settle into a car of the SkyTram in the abandoned area. Any of her prior CR that had her most-recent username can text her, or just run into her anywhere, literally or figuratively. She'll definitely check out the street market at some point.]
[ i ]
But none of those things truly matter in the end. Loki knew that too. With fluid grace, Loki pulls up the chair. ]

Galadriel | LOTR (books)
[Arriving here has been a flurry of new experiences- something incredibly unusual for someone as old as Galadriel- but taking public transport has to be high on her list of the strangest. Not quite feeling up to braving the SkyTram (she's still a bit worried that it's going to go plummetting to the ground), she decides to chance the GroundTram.
It's a strange vehicle; she can only imagine how curious some of her more mechanically minded relatives would have been. Even she can't help but be a little intrigued. She doesn't waste all day staring at the thing, but she definetly does give it a more careful lookover than most people probably do and spends a bit more time watching the cars come and go before she finally steps onto one herself.
It's a very good thing that she is holding on to something when the tram begins to move. She was not expecting it to go from a full stop to its full speed quite so quickly. She keeps her balance well enough, but, embarassingly, she can't help but make a little startled noise.]
Prompt iii: Disaster Relief
[Galadriel began finding ways to help almost as soon as she arrived- it's her nature, both to give aid when she can and to keep herself busy. She's handed out supplies, sweet talked a few local businesses into donating, even stepped up to help cook in the soup kitchen (yes, she can cook. She just...rarely does).
As a healer, she also keeps her eye open for anyone who might need her, whether they have a minor scrape from helping evacuate people from the flooding or something more serious from fighting the creatures by the river. Anyone who catches her her eye will get pulled aside with a quick nod to the wound and a simple-]

In his attempts to avoid large groups and just general physical contact, he's managed to trip a couple times and earn a few scraps. On someone so small who already 'lacks an eye' it's probably more concerning to others than it is to Ciel.

Ryan Fielding | OC (DnD)
[ Squaring up with a giant frog wasn't completely out of the ordinary for Ryan-- in fact, it was a bit of a welcome change of pace to the beasts of the Feywild. A frog he knew. A frog he understood, in the sense that he understood it wanted to eat him and that was about it. And when it was five or six giant frogs-- they were still frogs.
What was out of the ordinary was facing them alone. His journeys had rarely left him on his own, and even then, he had more often chosen the safe routes over traipsing through whatever wilderness was around him, in hopes of shaving an hour or two off. It wasn't worth it. He levels his halberd at it as it advances; as far as weapons went, it was an elegant affair of twisted dark metal widening into an axe-like head before tapering off into a spear-like point.
It served its purpose, anyway.
He spots someone else who he can only presume is patrolling the river as well, just up a ways, and calls out. ]
Hey! A little help over here?

When he arrives, it's about as busy as expected; he stands in the door, unsure of what to do for a moment, before he flags down the first person he sees who looks like they might be putting in some hours as well. ]

Meg Murry | A Wrinkle In Time - spoilers ahoy
III; Disaster Relief
[ Meg was inherently a good person. It's how she was raised: to respect others and help when needed. Her time here was going to help her become strong enough to save her family and stop the It. Nothing like starting off fresh, leaving the burden of the past four years behind. While she wasn't a fighter, there were other ways to help.
There is a v. serious 13 year old carrying too many blankets down the street because she's got this. 100%. Just don't bump into her please and thank you. Working through that stubborn streak is gonna take some time and, like always, her heart is in the right place. Occassionally, when the load is too much, she tries to tesser back to the base that had been set up for supplies... Though she might miss and end up in someone's living room. Sorry, she's not that great at it yet. Don't mind her.
Later, she's warming up milk for cocoa because the motion always soothed her on stormy nights so dealing with hard times of their own, her brother's voice echoing in her mind about unexpected visitors and making more than they might need. Not to mention how much it was helping her - keeping her hands busy and allowing her mind to wander and begin to make a few new plans for her own goals. ]
IV; Sampremi
Youth Rave
[ Meg has never really been the popular girl that got to go to all the parties, that seemed more like Calvin than her. At least, it would have before she'd spent time with him and actually got to know him beyond her presumptions. Her family was important to her and just being a kid for a night had never really been in her wheelhouse of skills. Of course, that doesn't take long once the first color hits her clothes, blue catching a few of her curls and a smile finding its way to her lips as the euphoria of a sugar rush washes over her.
She's quick to get into the spirit, tagging a few other people with various colors before finding her way onto the dance floor. ]
Tech Expo
[ Now this was way more up her alley. Meg makes sure to take her time going from exhibit to exhibit, asking questions that surprise a few people given her age. However, they indulge her and it's a great way to pass an afternoon... Okay, day. Realistically. She knows herself and she knows if there's one person that would want to spend more time here than her, it's her father.
Meg spends some extra time giving the robot pets some extra attention, missing her own, and playing games. She definitely goes through a few escape rooms with whoever might be interested or missing a person in their group, and bending the phones a whole bunch because what? ]

river rising:
[ It was safe to say Raleigh Becket was pretty much fed up with water. Oceans, rain, storms. And now a freakin' river. Great. He also didn't like the sound of creatures coming out of the flood waters. He found that more concerning than suddenly being on a moon where no one has heard of Jaegers or kaiju.

Floki | Vikings
[ Floki was curious more than anything else. Always standing just off to the side or at the back of the crowd until it best suited him. He was good at blending in, even in such a strange place full of strange people.
There was never any attempt to offer his services, nor to give his thoughts on what had and was causing the flooding. No, instead, Floki simply followed a small group at a casual distance, right into the Abandoned City and it's outer limit borders. This was like a dream, like a vision or a warning from the Gods, none of it felt real to Floki.
Perhaps his curiosity got the best of him? Causing him to lower his guard and show himself to the group he had been stalking like the cunning fox he was. A spark of blue electricity caught his eye, his wide, painted eyes. A breath left his lips, pushed hard from his chest as if he weren't permitted to breathe as if he was in the presence of the Gods themselves! Walking in a trance towards the sparking laser fence, making a gesture at his forehead with a palm and motion of fast moving fingers and a quick, quirky little sound, his acknowledgement of something amazing happening. A sign from Thor himself... But what did it mean!? ]
This flood is happening for a reason. Man should not meddle here, no.
[ Reaching out, almost touching the flicker of electricity that bounced around in the atmosphere around the fence. Laughing, the sound disjointed and unhinged as the spark snapped and stung at his wavering fingertips. A look of certainty and conviction as he turned to the group. ]
The Gods are here... They walk among us right now, we should leave well alone.
ii: you're a lizard, scary
[ Considering Floki has already been down to the perimeter of the overflowing rivers and considering he thought this event to be a precursor of something the Gods had in store, he was naturally lurking and looming around certain places. Places where people gathered and spoke freely, it was then that he learnt of the creatures that started to surface.
At first, Floki felt he shouldn't have anything to do with it! It wasn't his place to tamper with the doings and biddings of the Gods... Only, this sounded insane! He'd first thought it was Thor he had felt down by the Abandoned City limits, now? Now he has a sneaking suspicion that Loki was the God gracing them with his presence. Tricking them with illusions.
Still, strapping his Axe and Atz to their holsters (he wasn't the most traditional of fighters, but he was still just as skilled and handy as the next Viking!) Floki followed the commotion until he had seen the serpent-like creatures with his own eyes.
Frozen in place, part in awe and part fear. Floki would have to snap out of it if he wanted to avoid fighting them! As the longer he stood there and uttered in amazement under his breath, the more attention he was drawing from them! ]
iii: disaster relief
[ Everyone was doing their part to help. Gathering supplies, distributing them and helping anyone wounded or homeless. Floki even tried his hand in helping, it was the least he could do. ]
Here! This rune will help with your wounds.
[ Handing over a small stone he has caved with the symbol of healing, another he had carved was the same sigil often worn on the shields of Viking war parties, a protection rune.
It might not have made sense and Floki looked far from sane as he handed them out to people, but the intention was clear in his expression. He truly believed that these stones he had crafted were just as important and helpful as the next person's efforts. ]

Ivar's a bit further back than most. His wheelchair doesn't function well in the muddy, damp soil by the riverbanks. When he first sees Floki, it's his profile from the back. It stops him dead in his tracks. No, it couldn't be. But let's face it, there is not a single other person on the planet that was like Floki. It had to be him. And of course, he's facing down a monstrous crocodile big enough to tear in into small chunks in no time flat.
Ivar announces his presence by shooting an arrow directly into the eye of the giant scaly beast, one of the few weak spots he's been able to find on the beasts. It roars in pain, lashing back and forth in the shallows, churning up mud as it tries to remove the offending object that blinded it on one side.]
Get back over here before that thing eats you in two bites, you idiot!
[Yes, that is a Viking teen in a wheelchair with a bow and arrows insulting you, Floki. Though there's perhaps something a little familiar about him...just look at those eyes.]

Tahani Al-Jamil | The Good Place
» Seeking: I'm told I make an excellent friend. I should quite like to meet all sorts of people while I'm here.
» Preferences: I have an open mind and heart.
» Interests: Charities and non-profit organisations, primarily. I've dabbled in modelling, museum curating and Mary Berry once shed a tear over my Victoria Sponge.
» Bio: What's there to say? I was raised in England, studied at the Hertfordshire School for Expressionless Girls, before studying at Oxford University and the Sorbonne in Paris, France. I raised over sixty billion dollars for non-profit organizations and shortly after that, I died. I'm still wrapping my head around it all.
Gambit | Marvel 616
There's nothing like coming to a new home, even if it's temporary, only to find out it's a lot like your actual home. At least it didn't require much acclimation, aside from the idea that he couldn't just leave and get back to his own form of hermitting in peace. That wasn't even all that new, the grand scheme of things. Not one to charge in to a fight without knowing all the stakes, Remy is actually keeping to lower balconies and overhangs as he nears the water's swiftly rising edges. The water itself concerns the cajun. Having grown up in the flood-prone city of New Orleans, he was aware of how quickly waters could rise, but there was something almost otherworldly about this particular flood.
That image might have been aided by the giant river beasts that seemed to be prowling the flood waters. Nasty toads with teeth, giant water bugs, what had to be the biggest croc he'd ever seen, and several snakes he'd rather stay the hell away from, thank you very much. He hadn't officially joined a scouting party, even though the city had put out a call for one, but he would join anyone who seemed to be looking to beat back the jungle, as it were, and not in such a way as to startle them. He was a pretty damned good scout, after all.
A warning about the flooded streets around the corner, for instance, and what he could see from above the waters. "mes amies, hold up a second. You got company waitin' for ya 'round that corner, and I seen some big alligators, but these got the blue ribbon."

Cassandra de Rolo | Critical Role
Percy would be beside himself, Cassandra thinks, were he to be here and see her following the Vox Machina example of flinging oneself headlong into danger. Although trouble found them as often as they found it. But there were creatures attacking innocents, and she knows her way around weapons well enough to do something.
So she’s going to do it. And Percival never has to know.
It’s remarkably easy to arm herself before making her way closer to the riverfront. The sword feels familiar enough in her hand for her to find it comfortable. She really will have to find herself a more permanent weapon, after this.
A giant crocodile is not quite a dragon, but it certainly seems large enough to her when one finally crosses her path. “Oh, Pelor,” she murmurs softly, readying her blade.
(Later, after the fighting is finally done and the giant crocodile dealt with, a weary Cassandra finds a quiet place to sit, carding wet, white streaked hair out of her face with a quiet sigh. She is exhausted and muddy and soaked through, and more than a little bit bloody. But she’s had far worse injuries than this. It’s not fatal.)
iii: disaster relief
As a de Rolo, Cassandra was raised learning the finer details of politics, of running and ruling Whitestone. And she’d taken to it well. Even after... all that had happened, she still played a very large role in the day to day business of running the city.
Which is why helping to organize something as straightforward as disaster relief was far simpler. She hadn’t intended to take charge of the small area she’d found herself in, it had simply... happened as she’d fallen into the ease of noticing those looking lost or as though they were seeking something to do and guiding them to where they were most needed.
She’s been at it for she’s not quite sure how long at this point, she’s lost track. It doesn’t matter. It’s needed, so she works. And it’s not as though she’s not accustomed to working through exhaustion. She does it quite often for Whitestone. And while she hates being so removed from her people and her home, she has no teleportation magic to attempt to return.
So she’s here. And she’s doing what it is she can.

rose lalonde | homestuck
[Rose is no stranger to odd places with odd happenstances. She has chosen to be here, though, which is a nice change from previous odd happenstances. However long she's been here, it's been long enough that she feels compelled to help with the problems caused by the rivers rising. And, though she hasn't said it out loud, she also does sort of want to see a monster. Perhaps out of macabre curiosity; a need for nostalgic familiarity for a time when she was much better at fighting them.
It's been a few years since her last monster-encounter.
Her help comes in the form of magic. Big things? Blasted away. Need a scout? She is one-step, already floating above to scan the area. ]
Ah yes. I think I see something four-legged just ahead. Very scaly. Do you binoculars?
