Things have been pretty calm around the Quarantine for a month or two, since the behemoth herd was shut down - aside from a bit of emotional trauma brought on by the holograms that swarmed the city last month, everything's been pretty smooth sailing through Sampremi season. And of course, as anyone who's been in the Quarantine for more than a few months knows, nothing is ever that easy.
With spring rolling in and winter rolling out, there's been a lot of rain on the moon. Usually, that's not a really big problem, since the Quarantine historically doesn't have a lot of problems with flooding. This year, though, the water is rising exponentially, much faster than it has in almost the entire known history of the city. It starts to get noticeable around the 20th, with the water levels rising over a foot, and it keeps going faster and faster as the days move on. By the first of the month, the water has risen to flood out the two city blocks on either side of the river, forcing hundreds of people from their homes. The problem is even worse near the point that the river exits the city walls and starts winding its way into the Abandoned City, with the flood washing away many of the ramshackle buildings in the area and shorting out the laser fences in the area, leaving the city vulnerable to attack by water.
This month's mission? Form teams of explorers to head either up or down the river, braving the dangers from flooding and whatever monsters might be attracted to all the noise and panic, to try to find the source of the highly unusual flooding.
MOD NOTE: I will be playing around with the cause and fallout of the flooding throughout this and the next TDM. Feel free to have characters explore and find various options for what might be causing it, and if you have a good idea in a thread, send a link via PM to the mod account, and I'll see how many ideas I can weave into the solution!
Remember that bit in the last prompt about the monsters attracted by the noise and panic in the city, and also about the fences being compromised around where the river exits the city? Well, that turns out to be a really big problem throughout the end of March and until the flooding is resolved. Some new 'residents' will start showing up, crawling out of the river with scaly grins - giant crocodiles and carnivorous toads, and nasty giant bugs, oh my! Almost any amphibious, reptilian, bug, or water monster you can think of will be clambering up the banks of the river, scooting through the mud, and hunting anyone who ventures too close to their overflowing homes.
The city will be making a general call out to any fight-capable people who are willing to form temporary reserve units of the Perimeter Guard to help patrol the edges of the rising water and keep the monsters at bay. Join up with these, fight them on your own, or just keep away from the water. The choice is up to you.
It's not just fighters that can help with the disaster - there's also a citywide call out for volunteers to help out with disaster relief for the hundreds of people who have been displaced from their riverside homes. Whether you're commanding magic or science or just a hand to help out, your help will be more than welcome.
Volunteers can help gather and distribute clothing, non-perishable food, and other supplies to displaced residents; they can help cook for the large soup kitchens and buffet breakfasts; they can help knock together and furnish temporary shelter for victims. There is also a call for any residents who may have extra space in their homes to house victims of the disaster, so whether your character is displaced or offering a helping hand, there's plenty to do around the Quarantine.
While the disaster isn't exactly conducive to celebration, most of the merchants participating in the Sampremi street market (some nsfw content at the link) are doing a philanthropic spin on their usual booths. Most of the booths are offering free food and household items or clothing to residents who have been displaced by the flooding, offering free games, and accepting donations to help support the victims. They've also cleared out space in the market for victims and volunteers to rest and recuperate.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!
Meg Murry | A Wrinkle In Time - spoilers ahoy
III; Disaster Relief
[ Meg was inherently a good person. It's how she was raised: to respect others and help when needed. Her time here was going to help her become strong enough to save her family and stop the It. Nothing like starting off fresh, leaving the burden of the past four years behind. While she wasn't a fighter, there were other ways to help.
There is a v. serious 13 year old carrying too many blankets down the street because she's got this. 100%. Just don't bump into her please and thank you. Working through that stubborn streak is gonna take some time and, like always, her heart is in the right place. Occassionally, when the load is too much, she tries to tesser back to the base that had been set up for supplies... Though she might miss and end up in someone's living room. Sorry, she's not that great at it yet. Don't mind her.
Later, she's warming up milk for cocoa because the motion always soothed her on stormy nights so dealing with hard times of their own, her brother's voice echoing in her mind about unexpected visitors and making more than they might need. Not to mention how much it was helping her - keeping her hands busy and allowing her mind to wander and begin to make a few new plans for her own goals. ]
IV; Sampremi
Youth Rave
[ Meg has never really been the popular girl that got to go to all the parties, that seemed more like Calvin than her. At least, it would have before she'd spent time with him and actually got to know him beyond her presumptions. Her family was important to her and just being a kid for a night had never really been in her wheelhouse of skills. Of course, that doesn't take long once the first color hits her clothes, blue catching a few of her curls and a smile finding its way to her lips as the euphoria of a sugar rush washes over her.
She's quick to get into the spirit, tagging a few other people with various colors before finding her way onto the dance floor. ]
Tech Expo
[ Now this was way more up her alley. Meg makes sure to take her time going from exhibit to exhibit, asking questions that surprise a few people given her age. However, they indulge her and it's a great way to pass an afternoon... Okay, day. Realistically. She knows herself and she knows if there's one person that would want to spend more time here than her, it's her father.
Meg spends some extra time giving the robot pets some extra attention, missing her own, and playing games. She definitely goes through a few escape rooms with whoever might be interested or missing a person in their group, and bending the phones a whole bunch because what? ]
V; Friendr
» Seeking: friendship
» Preferences: what
» Interests: tessering, reading, string theory
» Bio: Both of my parents work for NASA and I have a younger brother named Chales Wallace. If the names Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which, or the It mean anything to you... We need to talk.

In the open, upstairs loft, something rustles, makes a curious sound, and... then there is a Night Fury, peeking over the edge to the downstairs living room, wide green eyes narrowing a little. Toothless warbles curiously, tail swishing, posture very much like a cat watching prey - shoulders hunched, head down, though his teeth aren't bared and he seems more inquisitive than hostile at the moment.
Sorry, Meg. Here be dragons. A dragon. Whatever.]

When she hears the noise, her confusion of where she ended up melts into a whole different kind of concern. Meg just kind of stares up at the dragon, watching as her mouth forms a silent 'o'. A few of the blankets fall off the top of her pile, allowing more of her face to peek through the assortment of textures.
Just play it cool. ]
Uh-- [ Yup, doing great. Incredibly eloquent. ] H-hi. Sorry. I'm just, I miscalculated. I'm just going to-- [ Her glasses slip slightly down her nose as she looks for the nearest door and out of habit, Meg tries to adjust to push them back up, scattering the rest of the blankets on the ground.
She quickly drops down to her knees, gathering them all back up into something of an orderly stack. ] I'll be out of here as soon as I can. [ She continues to talk to whatever it is that's staring at her like it can understand her. Better to not make assumptions. ]

The door to what seems to be an office opens up then, and Hiccup pokes his head out, a stick of charcoal behind his ear, and black smudges on his fingers.] Toothless? What are you-
[A pause.] Oh. Uh, hi. Hello. Are you- That's a lot of blankets?
disaster relief - also spoilers for awit
He can think of a way to somehow get the rest of his family here, and he constantly is in the back of his mind, but he can't possibly sit in a lab with everything going on. Besides, if there's one thing Floridians know about it's flooding. Meg's helping out, too, and Alex glances over from where he's giving someone else a hand just in time to see a familiar pair of glasses barely peeking up above the huge amount of blankets she's carrying.
It's hard not to grin as he excuses himself and moves over. ]
You're allowed to ask for help, Meglet. [ He doesn't take any of the blankets from her-instead he motions that he can, and waits for her to make the decision herself. Wounded pride isn't what he wants, just to take a load off of her. ] May I?

It was going to be okay.
The nickname softens any protestation she might've made in an attempt to show she totally had this, giving a nod against the blankets with a muffled 'okay' before stepping towards the open hands to lighten her load. ]
✔ @s.uris
[ He doesn't know what all she's talking about but some of it he definitely gets.
The mention of It means something to him but he doesn't want to talk about his It and he hopes her It is something different. ]
It's really cool your parents work for NASA, though.

[ There was a rhythm to her life, a routine of sorts she'd settled into once her Dad had left. She'd grown more insular and reading was a great escape from the world around her for a little bit. Besides, it was a way to stay busy while avoiding her homework... So. There's that. ]
It has its ups and downs.
[ Yes, she got to do some pretty cool experiments at home and it was a thriving learning environment... But, it also came with a huge cost. ]
no subject
My dad is a Rabbi. It's not nearly as interesting, probably.
[ It might be boring but the biggest cost is well the typical issues with having someone like that for a parent. ]
