Things have been pretty calm around the Quarantine for a month or two, since the behemoth herd was shut down - aside from a bit of emotional trauma brought on by the holograms that swarmed the city last month, everything's been pretty smooth sailing through Sampremi season. And of course, as anyone who's been in the Quarantine for more than a few months knows, nothing is ever that easy.
With spring rolling in and winter rolling out, there's been a lot of rain on the moon. Usually, that's not a really big problem, since the Quarantine historically doesn't have a lot of problems with flooding. This year, though, the water is rising exponentially, much faster than it has in almost the entire known history of the city. It starts to get noticeable around the 20th, with the water levels rising over a foot, and it keeps going faster and faster as the days move on. By the first of the month, the water has risen to flood out the two city blocks on either side of the river, forcing hundreds of people from their homes. The problem is even worse near the point that the river exits the city walls and starts winding its way into the Abandoned City, with the flood washing away many of the ramshackle buildings in the area and shorting out the laser fences in the area, leaving the city vulnerable to attack by water.
This month's mission? Form teams of explorers to head either up or down the river, braving the dangers from flooding and whatever monsters might be attracted to all the noise and panic, to try to find the source of the highly unusual flooding.
MOD NOTE: I will be playing around with the cause and fallout of the flooding throughout this and the next TDM. Feel free to have characters explore and find various options for what might be causing it, and if you have a good idea in a thread, send a link via PM to the mod account, and I'll see how many ideas I can weave into the solution!
Remember that bit in the last prompt about the monsters attracted by the noise and panic in the city, and also about the fences being compromised around where the river exits the city? Well, that turns out to be a really big problem throughout the end of March and until the flooding is resolved. Some new 'residents' will start showing up, crawling out of the river with scaly grins - giant crocodiles and carnivorous toads, and nasty giant bugs, oh my! Almost any amphibious, reptilian, bug, or water monster you can think of will be clambering up the banks of the river, scooting through the mud, and hunting anyone who ventures too close to their overflowing homes.
The city will be making a general call out to any fight-capable people who are willing to form temporary reserve units of the Perimeter Guard to help patrol the edges of the rising water and keep the monsters at bay. Join up with these, fight them on your own, or just keep away from the water. The choice is up to you.
It's not just fighters that can help with the disaster - there's also a citywide call out for volunteers to help out with disaster relief for the hundreds of people who have been displaced from their riverside homes. Whether you're commanding magic or science or just a hand to help out, your help will be more than welcome.
Volunteers can help gather and distribute clothing, non-perishable food, and other supplies to displaced residents; they can help cook for the large soup kitchens and buffet breakfasts; they can help knock together and furnish temporary shelter for victims. There is also a call for any residents who may have extra space in their homes to house victims of the disaster, so whether your character is displaced or offering a helping hand, there's plenty to do around the Quarantine.
While the disaster isn't exactly conducive to celebration, most of the merchants participating in the Sampremi street market (some nsfw content at the link) are doing a philanthropic spin on their usual booths. Most of the booths are offering free food and household items or clothing to residents who have been displaced by the flooding, offering free games, and accepting donations to help support the victims. They've also cleared out space in the market for victims and volunteers to rest and recuperate.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!
Galadriel | LOTR (books)
[Arriving here has been a flurry of new experiences- something incredibly unusual for someone as old as Galadriel- but taking public transport has to be high on her list of the strangest. Not quite feeling up to braving the SkyTram (she's still a bit worried that it's going to go plummetting to the ground), she decides to chance the GroundTram.
It's a strange vehicle; she can only imagine how curious some of her more mechanically minded relatives would have been. Even she can't help but be a little intrigued. She doesn't waste all day staring at the thing, but she definetly does give it a more careful lookover than most people probably do and spends a bit more time watching the cars come and go before she finally steps onto one herself.
It's a very good thing that she is holding on to something when the tram begins to move. She was not expecting it to go from a full stop to its full speed quite so quickly. She keeps her balance well enough, but, embarassingly, she can't help but make a little startled noise.]
Prompt iii: Disaster Relief
[Galadriel began finding ways to help almost as soon as she arrived- it's her nature, both to give aid when she can and to keep herself busy. She's handed out supplies, sweet talked a few local businesses into donating, even stepped up to help cook in the soup kitchen (yes, she can cook. She just...rarely does).
As a healer, she also keeps her eye open for anyone who might need her, whether they have a minor scrape from helping evacuate people from the flooding or something more serious from fighting the creatures by the river. Anyone who catches her her eye will get pulled aside with a quick nod to the wound and a simple-]
Let me tend to that. [Are you going to argue with her?]
Friendr
» Seeking: Friendship
» Preferences: I am a woman wed.
» Interests: Music, gardening, politics, languages, 'magic,' for lack of a more concise term.
» Bio: Brevity is not among my gifts. Ask if there is aught you wish to know; I will answer, within reason.

He's gotten a warm sweater, trousers, a plain medical-style patch, and long boots as he makes sure everyone who looks like they need a hot drink or a quick bite has something. And he's sure his father and Undertaker have gotten a chuckle out of his efforts.
In his attempts to avoid large groups and just general physical contact, he's managed to trip a couple times and earn a few scraps. On someone so small who already 'lacks an eye' it's probably more concerning to others than it is to Ciel.
So... yes. He is going to argue.] It's nothing I can't deal with when I go home this evening.
no subject
Perhaps not. But neither is there harm in seeing to it now.
no subject
Only that it will interrupt me as I'm trying to work.
no subject
She gives a soft laugh.]
Surely you can spare the time to wash and bandage a wound? It would do you no harm to sit and rest a little, for that matter.
no subject
A scrape isn't going to slow me down. It can wait.
[He just barely bites back asking if she's bored enough to pester other volunteers.]
no subject
[He's not the only one she's pestered! But he is getting a little extra attention because of his youth, yes.]
no subject
[He'll let out a soft sigh then.] I'm here to help as well though so if you'd like hot tea or something to eat, my cafe is supplying the volunteers with what we can.
elves v trams!!
At first, he doesn't really notice Galadriel, too wrapped up in texting on his phone, but when the tram starts and she makes a little surprised sound he looks up, finally noticing her. In general, he's not a help people out kind of guy, but he makes exceptions for elves.]
You alright, pumpkin?
no subject
'Galadriel.' I am called 'Galadriel.' [Not 'pumpkin.' Her dignity has taken enough of a bruising today.] But I am fine, thank you. I was simply not prepared for the speed of this...[She gestures around them, indicating the tram and obviously struggling to find a word for it.]
no subject
[He's aware that he literally just did the same thing again, but it's out of cheek, rather than anything mean-spirited.]
It's a tram, basically just a small, shitty train. If you've got trains, I guess?
[Generally he has a pretty good grasp of what's 'normal' for most fantasy bullshit places (which he's assuming she's from) but sometimes it's hard to know when his world is so different from most.]
no subject
We do not. Most travel by land is done on horseback or carriage. [Your other option is walking.
Three books of it.]no subject
[As opposed to half old school, like where he's from. Zelda falls somewhere between the two, from what he knows of her world so far, so it takes all sorts.]
This place is gonna be a trip but honestly? Most people have a harder time with the magic than they do with the technology, so if you're down with that you'll get by just fine.
[Everyone he knows who comes from a world without technology has adapted pretty quickly, but people who aren't used to magic seem to take a long time to wrap their heads around it.]
no subject
[And the strange phrases continue. 'Trip?' 'Down with?' What an odd dialect. The gist of what he's saying, though, is clear enough, and she's glad to hear it. At the mention of magic, a slight smile finally finds its way to her lips- now we're in more familiar territory.]
That is reassuring. I take it you have been here for some time, then?
no subject
Been about a year for me, which is kinda fucking wild but it's fine, I'll get outta here eventually. [He has to.] Name's Taako, by the way, nice to meetcha.
[He even offers his hand to shake! He has some manners, occasionally.]
