Things have been pretty calm around the Quarantine for a month or two, since the behemoth herd was shut down - aside from a bit of emotional trauma brought on by the holograms that swarmed the city last month, everything's been pretty smooth sailing through Sampremi season. And of course, as anyone who's been in the Quarantine for more than a few months knows, nothing is ever that easy.
With spring rolling in and winter rolling out, there's been a lot of rain on the moon. Usually, that's not a really big problem, since the Quarantine historically doesn't have a lot of problems with flooding. This year, though, the water is rising exponentially, much faster than it has in almost the entire known history of the city. It starts to get noticeable around the 20th, with the water levels rising over a foot, and it keeps going faster and faster as the days move on. By the first of the month, the water has risen to flood out the two city blocks on either side of the river, forcing hundreds of people from their homes. The problem is even worse near the point that the river exits the city walls and starts winding its way into the Abandoned City, with the flood washing away many of the ramshackle buildings in the area and shorting out the laser fences in the area, leaving the city vulnerable to attack by water.
This month's mission? Form teams of explorers to head either up or down the river, braving the dangers from flooding and whatever monsters might be attracted to all the noise and panic, to try to find the source of the highly unusual flooding.
MOD NOTE: I will be playing around with the cause and fallout of the flooding throughout this and the next TDM. Feel free to have characters explore and find various options for what might be causing it, and if you have a good idea in a thread, send a link via PM to the mod account, and I'll see how many ideas I can weave into the solution!
Remember that bit in the last prompt about the monsters attracted by the noise and panic in the city, and also about the fences being compromised around where the river exits the city? Well, that turns out to be a really big problem throughout the end of March and until the flooding is resolved. Some new 'residents' will start showing up, crawling out of the river with scaly grins - giant crocodiles and carnivorous toads, and nasty giant bugs, oh my! Almost any amphibious, reptilian, bug, or water monster you can think of will be clambering up the banks of the river, scooting through the mud, and hunting anyone who ventures too close to their overflowing homes.
The city will be making a general call out to any fight-capable people who are willing to form temporary reserve units of the Perimeter Guard to help patrol the edges of the rising water and keep the monsters at bay. Join up with these, fight them on your own, or just keep away from the water. The choice is up to you.
It's not just fighters that can help with the disaster - there's also a citywide call out for volunteers to help out with disaster relief for the hundreds of people who have been displaced from their riverside homes. Whether you're commanding magic or science or just a hand to help out, your help will be more than welcome.
Volunteers can help gather and distribute clothing, non-perishable food, and other supplies to displaced residents; they can help cook for the large soup kitchens and buffet breakfasts; they can help knock together and furnish temporary shelter for victims. There is also a call for any residents who may have extra space in their homes to house victims of the disaster, so whether your character is displaced or offering a helping hand, there's plenty to do around the Quarantine.
While the disaster isn't exactly conducive to celebration, most of the merchants participating in the Sampremi street market (some nsfw content at the link) are doing a philanthropic spin on their usual booths. Most of the booths are offering free food and household items or clothing to residents who have been displaced by the flooding, offering free games, and accepting donations to help support the victims. They've also cleared out space in the market for victims and volunteers to rest and recuperate.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

You know what, maybe I can help with that dignity thing.
[Taako draws a few quick symbols in the air with his free hand and the rain - stops. Or it stops in a ten foot radius around them, the rain pattering harmless against an invisible barrier above. Totally worth the spell slot.]
Much better, now - Tatooine. I don't think I've been to that one, hit up a couple desert worlds in my time but most of 'em were uninhabited, you know?
no subject
This is amazing. How did you do it? [ he wonders if, with some practice, he can learn to do something similar with the force. he's never thought to try-- yoda and ben had been more focused on training him to fight.
.. ah, but-- the stranger was saying something else. he blinks, flushing faintly, carefully setting the thermos down beside himself as he considers the comment. ] Not many desert worlds are inhabited in my experience, at least not by people you'd want anything to do with. Tatooine's sort of unique in that it's a hub for organized crime. It's far enough out and worthless enough that the Republic never bothered with it, and the Empire barely does. [ a beat, finally pulling his hood back, ruffling damp blond hair as he does so. ] Not really sure why regular people ever settled there, but they're all stubborn as Sithspit. You wouldn't be able to get most moisture farmers off Tatooine if you pried them off.
no subject
As far as deserts go, Tatooine actually sounds kinda dope but uh, is there a planet called Coruscant in your neck of the woods?
[Cassian has mentioned it before and it had seemed pretty big and populous, so maybe it's an easily recognizable one.]
no subject
How did you know? You're-- Are you from my galaxy after all? [ not exactly impossible. the galaxy's huge, and while most people have some kind of vague idea of where tatooine is, not everyone does. ]
no subject
[If Taako is particularly sad about this fact, it doesn't show, he just barrels straight on with the conversation.]
There's a couple people here from around there, but I should check that like... the Empire are the bad guys, yeah?
[He knows that Cassian and Jyn were fighting against the Empire, that Finn was, too, and while this dude seems nice Taako isn't about to give their names away if he's not on the right side.]
no subject
he takes a breath in through his nose, then nods. ] Yeah. Though it's more complicated than just.. bad guys and good guys. A lot of people who've joined the Empire are just.. trying to survive. I almost joined myself a couple of years ago, just to get off Tatooine.
no subject
I get it, kinda did the mercenary thing for a bit so I can't exactly throw stones.
[Taako can understand being desperate enough to sign up with an organization just because it's freedom or money or safety.]
Pretty sure the people here from your galaxy are part of the Rebellion but if you want I'll give 'em your name once we're outta this stupid forest? See if they wanna reach out.
[Because thinking about it, he's relatively certain Cassian might straight up murder Taako if he name dropped him.]
no subject
[ he's joking, of course. if han had really been determined to go back to smuggling, he would have, and there's not a damned thing luke or leia could have done about it. thankfully, he's a sucker for tiny women that could destroy him and small blond farmboys. ]
There's a lot of people like that in the Alliance, lots of Imperial defectors. There are decent people all over the galaxy. Sometimes they just have to realize it themselves.
[ he swings his feet a little, the gesture almost unconscious, and lifts the thermos to drink more of his caf. the offer earns a musing noise, though, and he offers a small nod. ] Sure. [ he understands the caution, particularly if the others in question occupy sensitive positions in the alliance. luke, on the other hand.. well, there's no hiding for him.
he offers his gloved hand out, and though there's a slight audible clicking beneath the leather, the motion is still as smooth as his real one. ] I'm Luke. Luke Skywalker. Technically I'm still commander of Rogue Squadron if they want to know.
no subject
Lovely to meet you, Luke. [If Taako notices the fact Luke's hand isn't flesh and blood, he's polite enough not to comment on it as he gives it a shake.] I'm Taako, technically an arcanist for the Institute of Planar Research and Exploration, if we're doing titles.
[It's been a while since he's introduced himself like that, but sometimes it's good to shake things up.]
no subject
It's nice to meet you, too, Taako. [ you know, despite the weather and the monsters. he'd brought luke caf and company, and he's keeping them relatively dry. taako's pretty much made a life-long friend here. ] Can I ask what an arcanist is? [ he points upward to the invisible barrier again. ] Does it have anything to do with this?
no subject
[Now that he's settled the whole "where does this dude come from" question, Taako is happy to talk about his favourite topic: himself.]
The arcane arts is just a fancy bullshit way of saying magic. [He knows that 'magic' isn't really something Luke's reality deals with, so he expects some questioning there, but he'll finish his explanation first.] I'm a wizard, one of the best, natch, and this right here is a spell. You can do all sorts of shit with magic but at it's core it's basically like - manipulating the world around you? Magic is a type of energy, if you know how to work with it, then you can shake things up in all kinds of fun ways.
[It's hard to put the concept of magic into layman's terms when he's so used to it being a fact of life, the same as air or water, but he hopes that's a decent start.]
no subject
It's like the Force, [ he says almost immediately, intrigued and shifting on his perch to turn fully toward taako. ] At least, that's what it sounds like. The Force is a type of energy, too. [ he doesn't want to get into the mystical, religious aspects, but if you pare it down to its very basic quality, that's what it is. ] You used hand-gestures earlier. Do you have to have them?
[ sometimes luke finds it easier to focus his abilities through them, but he knows he'll need them less and less often the more he practices, the stronger he grows in his abilities. ]
How much attention do you have to keep on your.. spells? It doesn't seem like you're focusing on this one at all now that it's in effect.
no subject
Different spells take different things, sometimes it's a gesture or a word, sometimes it's a handful of diamonds, depends what you wanna do. [If he were a normal D&D wizard, almost all his spells would need all those components, but he isn't and they don't.] As for focus, I mean - if you stabbed me I wouldn't be able to keep it up but this is background noise for me right now. Can't really do two spells at once and I got a limit of how many I can cast without resting, cause they eat up my energy same as any sorta exercise. But something like this doesn't need to be channeled continuously.
[Please don't stab him to test this.]
