Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● There are currently 19 Character Slots available.
● Reserves will open on April 15 at 10:00 pm EST. Applications will be open from May 1-7.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

prompt i: a river rising

Things have been pretty calm around the Quarantine for a month or two, since the behemoth herd was shut down - aside from a bit of emotional trauma brought on by the holograms that swarmed the city last month, everything's been pretty smooth sailing through Sampremi season. And of course, as anyone who's been in the Quarantine for more than a few months knows, nothing is ever that easy.

With spring rolling in and winter rolling out, there's been a lot of rain on the moon. Usually, that's not a really big problem, since the Quarantine historically doesn't have a lot of problems with flooding. This year, though, the water is rising exponentially, much faster than it has in almost the entire known history of the city. It starts to get noticeable around the 20th, with the water levels rising over a foot, and it keeps going faster and faster as the days move on. By the first of the month, the water has risen to flood out the two city blocks on either side of the river, forcing hundreds of people from their homes. The problem is even worse near the point that the river exits the city walls and starts winding its way into the Abandoned City, with the flood washing away many of the ramshackle buildings in the area and shorting out the laser fences in the area, leaving the city vulnerable to attack by water.

This month's mission? Form teams of explorers to head either up or down the river, braving the dangers from flooding and whatever monsters might be attracted to all the noise and panic, to try to find the source of the highly unusual flooding.

MOD NOTE: I will be playing around with the cause and fallout of the flooding throughout this and the next TDM. Feel free to have characters explore and find various options for what might be causing it, and if you have a good idea in a thread, send a link via PM to the mod account, and I'll see how many ideas I can weave into the solution!

prompt ii: you're a lizard, scary

Remember that bit in the last prompt about the monsters attracted by the noise and panic in the city, and also about the fences being compromised around where the river exits the city? Well, that turns out to be a really big problem throughout the end of March and until the flooding is resolved. Some new 'residents' will start showing up, crawling out of the river with scaly grins - giant crocodiles and carnivorous toads, and nasty giant bugs, oh my! Almost any amphibious, reptilian, bug, or water monster you can think of will be clambering up the banks of the river, scooting through the mud, and hunting anyone who ventures too close to their overflowing homes.

The city will be making a general call out to any fight-capable people who are willing to form temporary reserve units of the Perimeter Guard to help patrol the edges of the rising water and keep the monsters at bay. Join up with these, fight them on your own, or just keep away from the water. The choice is up to you.

prompt iii: disaster relief

It's not just fighters that can help with the disaster - there's also a citywide call out for volunteers to help out with disaster relief for the hundreds of people who have been displaced from their riverside homes. Whether you're commanding magic or science or just a hand to help out, your help will be more than welcome.

Volunteers can help gather and distribute clothing, non-perishable food, and other supplies to displaced residents; they can help cook for the large soup kitchens and buffet breakfasts; they can help knock together and furnish temporary shelter for victims. There is also a call for any residents who may have extra space in their homes to house victims of the disaster, so whether your character is displaced or offering a helping hand, there's plenty to do around the Quarantine.

prompt iv: sampremi street market

While the disaster isn't exactly conducive to celebration, most of the merchants participating in the Sampremi street market (some nsfw content at the link) are doing a philanthropic spin on their usual booths. Most of the booths are offering free food and household items or clothing to residents who have been displaced by the flooding, offering free games, and accepting donations to help support the victims. They've also cleared out space in the market for victims and volunteers to rest and recuperate.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

[ honestly, big scary monsters with huge teeth aren't exactly unusual in the galaxy luke is from, and luke himself has been at the mercy of them on more than one occasion. still, this just happens to be a combination of factors that he's not exactly thrilled about.

rain by itself is pretty amazing in reasonable limits, even after years off tatooine. when it's like this, though, coming down in sheets and flooding everything, it's miserable and overwhelming and still a little bit scary to a guy from a desert planet. and then there's the giant scaled dragon-like animals with all the teeth, which seem to thrive in the flooded conditions.

altogether, it makes for a wet, miserable-looking blond perched neatly in a spot where he can act as a look-out. there's a parka draped over him to keep the worst of the water out, his lightsaber in his lap and a few fallen bits of stone spinning in the air in some kind of game he's playing to keep himself occupied. he looks like he could really use a cup of caf. ]

[ markets this big still occasionally manage to overwhelm luke, but he seems to be doing okay this evening. with a break in the rain and his volunteer duties on the perimeter guard, he's decided to check out some of what the market offers and to see if there's anything he can help out with.

for a while, then, he can be found running supplies back and forth for various booths or collecting donations with a charming, slightly bashful smile. eventually, though, he really does just wind up wandering the market, looking at what's on offer--and getting flustered at some of the more.. exotic items--and trying some of the food samples.

if you're lucky(?), you might wind up with a black-gloved hand suddenly in your field of vision, half of some kind of sweet bread held carefully between his fingers. beyond it, he's smiling a little, not quite shy as he offers it out. ]

I was told you're supposed to share this, so. Would you like this half?

[The good thing about his primary weapon being an umbrella is that it does, in fact, double as an honest to gods umbrella. The downside is that it's only useful while not in the middle of a fight, so while he currently has it up over his head to keep the rain off, Taako is still pretty much soaked from his earlier tussle with an oversized crocodile. The plus side of that is the fact the rain manages to wash off most of the blood.

He's a glass cannon, these things happen.

What Luke might be happy to know is that he does have coffee. Another plus. Taako drops down unceremoniously next to someone who, to him, still looks a bit like a kid, and holds out a warm thermos.]

You look fucking wretched, my dude, here.

[He's a helper.]

[ luke glances up from beneath the hood of his parka as taako drops down next to him, offering a small, slightly tired smile at the comment. the stones float over and drop down beside him, and he accepts the thermos with his ungloved hand. if nothing else, the warmth is more than appreciated. ]

Thank you so much. [ at this point, he doesn't actually care what it is. he twists the lid off, though, relaxing at the semi-familiar smell. caf is a little different here from what he's used to, but not unrecognizable. ] It's funny, no matter how many places I've been since leaving my homeworld, I still can't get used to rain.

[This dude clearly has some kind of powers, but that's not unusual, a lot of people here do.]

You owe me. [That's said with a wink, clearly not serious.] Lemme guess, you're from a desert planet?

[He's been to one or two worlds like that, where rain was a rarity and a luxury, that he can guess it might be similar for someone who's apparently not used to rain.]

[xwing]

[ he shoots him a bashful grin at that. ] You'll have to wait until I'm more settled to collect, then. I can't even give you my dignity at this point, the rain took it.

[ he sips from the thermos, practically huddling around the warmth. to think, he never thought he'd miss tatooine. ]

Mm. [ he shifts, crossing booted ankles, glancing down into the water. ] Tatooine. Not much there but sand, criminals, and desperate moisture farmers.

[Oh no he's sweet.]

You know what, maybe I can help with that dignity thing.

[Taako draws a few quick symbols in the air with his free hand and the rain - stops. Or it stops in a ten foot radius around them, the rain pattering harmless against an invisible barrier above. Totally worth the spell slot.]

Much better, now - Tatooine. I don't think I've been to that one, hit up a couple desert worlds in my time but most of 'em were uninhabited, you know?

[ luke startles, then glances up, blue eyes very wide and amazed in his face. oh. how--? he frees his good hand, reaching up as if to touch the invisible barrier, then glancing to taako, still a little wide-eyed. ]

This is amazing. How did you do it? [ he wonders if, with some practice, he can learn to do something similar with the force. he's never thought to try-- yoda and ben had been more focused on training him to fight.

.. ah, but-- the stranger was saying something else. he blinks, flushing faintly, carefully setting the thermos down beside himself as he considers the comment. ] Not many desert worlds are inhabited in my experience, at least not by people you'd want anything to do with. Tatooine's sort of unique in that it's a hub for organized crime. It's far enough out and worthless enough that the Republic never bothered with it, and the Empire barely does. [ a beat, finally pulling his hood back, ruffling damp blond hair as he does so. ] Not really sure why regular people ever settled there, but they're all stubborn as Sithspit. You wouldn't be able to get most moisture farmers off Tatooine if you pried them off.

[He'll explain magic in a second, but he's just heard a bunch of words that he recognizes, namely Empire and he wants to see if there's a connection here.]

As far as deserts go, Tatooine actually sounds kinda dope but uh, is there a planet called Coruscant in your neck of the woods?

[Cassian has mentioned it before and it had seemed pretty big and populous, so maybe it's an easily recognizable one.]

[ he straightens a little, blinking in faint surprise. ] Oh-- yeah, actually. It's a Core world. Very important, very busy. [ he'd like to actually avoid having to travel to coruscant more than he has to. for a guy from a planet who'd seen his nearest neighbors only a handful of times a solar year, coruscant is still just a little bit overwhelming. ]

How did you know? You're-- Are you from my galaxy after all? [ not exactly impossible. the galaxy's huge, and while most people have some kind of vague idea of where tatooine is, not everyone does. ]

I think so. She's also a princess, so she's been doing it for a long time. State dinners and things like that, I expect.

We didn't grow up together, so no. Actually, I was raised on a moisture farm on a desert planet, so I was about as far from royalty as you can get.

[ The Force must be with him or something, because lo and behold, a thermos of caf is presented to him, held by an equally-miserable looking Twi'lek, her lekku covered as best she could manage by the hood of her poncho which was clearly not designed for it. ]

Here. I grabbed an extra.

[ She's clearly sympathetic, if also a little emotionally distant. If Luke has been observant, she hasn't talked much to the others here, and it could almost be argued has actively avoided the young Jedi. ]

[ he's noticed her, of course; this city is human-heavy, with other races few and far between. more than that, he recognizes her, though they haven't really crossed paths properly before. their duties frequently seem to take them in opposite directions. or they did; being trapped here complicates all of that.

he offers a smile as she hands down the thermos, small and kind and tired, the rocks dropping one by one into the water. it's more than just a not-enough-sleep sort of exhaustion, but he expects she knows what that's like, too. ]

Thank you. General Syndulla, right? [ he shifts a little to the side in a silent invitation, curling both hands around the thermos even though only one of them can currently feel the heat. he desperately needs to do some work on his prosthetic; it's just hard to here without all the tools he needs. ] I'm sorry that I haven't said hello before now. [ as if he didn't notice that she's been avoiding him. it just seems kinder to place it on his own head. ]

[firstrebel]

[ Hera gives him a small smile of her own, perching near him on the driest spot she can find. Okay, it's not really that dry - nothing is, out here, but that's - whatever. She's dealt with worse.

And she understands the bone-deep exhaustion, too. Oh, does she ever. ]

It's as much my fault as yours. Luke? I'm not sure how you prefer to be addressed.

[ Oh, there's a lot of talk about him in the rank and file, of course. The kid who destroyed the Death Star. Most of it, she's pretty sure, is a load of bantha dung. But the consistent things that always pop up are: "farm boy" and "Jedi". It's not the "farm boy" thing that's kept her somewhat pointedly out of his orbit. ]

[xwing]

[ the smile takes on a slightly strained note, and luke ducks his head over the caf, unscrewing the lid. ] Just.. Luke. [ as long as he can be 'just luke' around people, he wants that. he knows he has duties at home, things he's required to do as a jedi, but the idea of just how much he has to take on leaves his lungs feeling squeezed tight and his vision a little black around the edges. funny, he'd had nightmares after leaving tatooine, after the death star, but the panic attacks-- those are pretty new.

he sips straight from the thermos, booted ankles crossing absently as he glances aside to her. for a few moments more, he's quiet, but then he lifts his gloved hand to push damp hair back behind his ear, beneath the hood. ]

Can I ask what.. point you're from? I hear people can come here from any place in the timeline, and.. [ a vague gesture, indicating the rest of the city. he's sensed.. others. but like she's been avoiding him, he's sort of been avoiding them, too. it's a lot to deal with. ]

[ She finds she can barely meet his gaze. He looks nothing like Ezra, but they're about the same age. So young. The weight of the galaxy on their shoulders. It hurts. So she focuses on her own thermos, taking a sip, letting the hot caf warm her insides a bit. ]

I hear that, too. The last big engagement was - Yavin. I didn't fly in that one, but I hear Phoenix Squadron did me proud. I've been on rotation duty at the flight school.

[ oh. that was.. a while ago. years ago by luke's count. he blinks, glancing down thoughtfully at his feet. there's definitely something off here, but he's not quite sure how to put his finger on it. it has nothing to do with their very different places in the timeline and everything to do with why she's been avoiding him. he thinks.

he doesn't blame people for avoiding him, no more than he blames people for pinning their hopes on him. after over two decades with the only examples of the force being represented in his father and in the emperor, he can see why people would be.. afraid of him. this doesn't feel like that, though. not really.

he clears his throat. ] It's.. been a couple of years since Yavin for me. I won't tell you anything else if you don't want to know, but.. you should probably at least know that the Emperor and Darth Vader are dead. [ that's barely a beginning to the fall of the empire, but it is a real beginning. ]

[firstrebel]

[ There's certainly no fear on Hera's part. She's not afraid of him or of what he can do. She's simply - conflicted. Sorrowful. Hopeful, too, and her surprise at his next words is palpable. ]

They - I - wow. That's... amazing. Difficult to believe, but amazing.

[ If it's true, if they'll really be gone in a couple of years, then - then it wasn't all in vain. And Jacen might have a future. ]

Thank you for telling me. It's a little hard to believe, if only because - I've been in this fight since I was sixteen.
