riverview: march test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● There are currently 19 Character Slots available.
Reserves will open on April 15 at 10:00 pm EST. Applications will be open from May 1-7.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: a river rising

Things have been pretty calm around the Quarantine for a month or two, since the behemoth herd was shut down - aside from a bit of emotional trauma brought on by the holograms that swarmed the city last month, everything's been pretty smooth sailing through Sampremi season. And of course, as anyone who's been in the Quarantine for more than a few months knows, nothing is ever that easy.

With spring rolling in and winter rolling out, there's been a lot of rain on the moon. Usually, that's not a really big problem, since the Quarantine historically doesn't have a lot of problems with flooding. This year, though, the water is rising exponentially, much faster than it has in almost the entire known history of the city. It starts to get noticeable around the 20th, with the water levels rising over a foot, and it keeps going faster and faster as the days move on. By the first of the month, the water has risen to flood out the two city blocks on either side of the river, forcing hundreds of people from their homes. The problem is even worse near the point that the river exits the city walls and starts winding its way into the Abandoned City, with the flood washing away many of the ramshackle buildings in the area and shorting out the laser fences in the area, leaving the city vulnerable to attack by water.

This month's mission? Form teams of explorers to head either up or down the river, braving the dangers from flooding and whatever monsters might be attracted to all the noise and panic, to try to find the source of the highly unusual flooding.

MOD NOTE: I will be playing around with the cause and fallout of the flooding throughout this and the next TDM. Feel free to have characters explore and find various options for what might be causing it, and if you have a good idea in a thread, send a link via PM to the mod account, and I'll see how many ideas I can weave into the solution!

prompt ii: you're a lizard, scary

Remember that bit in the last prompt about the monsters attracted by the noise and panic in the city, and also about the fences being compromised around where the river exits the city? Well, that turns out to be a really big problem throughout the end of March and until the flooding is resolved. Some new 'residents' will start showing up, crawling out of the river with scaly grins - giant crocodiles and carnivorous toads, and nasty giant bugs, oh my! Almost any amphibious, reptilian, bug, or water monster you can think of will be clambering up the banks of the river, scooting through the mud, and hunting anyone who ventures too close to their overflowing homes.

The city will be making a general call out to any fight-capable people who are willing to form temporary reserve units of the Perimeter Guard to help patrol the edges of the rising water and keep the monsters at bay. Join up with these, fight them on your own, or just keep away from the water. The choice is up to you.

prompt iii: disaster relief

It's not just fighters that can help with the disaster - there's also a citywide call out for volunteers to help out with disaster relief for the hundreds of people who have been displaced from their riverside homes. Whether you're commanding magic or science or just a hand to help out, your help will be more than welcome.

Volunteers can help gather and distribute clothing, non-perishable food, and other supplies to displaced residents; they can help cook for the large soup kitchens and buffet breakfasts; they can help knock together and furnish temporary shelter for victims. There is also a call for any residents who may have extra space in their homes to house victims of the disaster, so whether your character is displaced or offering a helping hand, there's plenty to do around the Quarantine.

prompt iv: sampremi street market

While the disaster isn't exactly conducive to celebration, most of the merchants participating in the Sampremi street market (some nsfw content at the link) are doing a philanthropic spin on their usual booths. Most of the booths are offering free food and household items or clothing to residents who have been displaced by the flooding, offering free games, and accepting donations to help support the victims. They've also cleared out space in the market for victims and volunteers to rest and recuperate.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

prompt vi: wildcard

Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

ɪɪ. Gɪᴀɴᴛ Fʀᴏɢ: Mᴇᴅɪᴜᴍ ʙᴇᴀsᴛ, ᴜɴᴀʟɪɢɴᴇᴅ

[ Squaring up with a giant frog wasn't completely out of the ordinary for Ryan-- in fact, it was a bit of a welcome change of pace to the beasts of the Feywild. A frog he knew. A frog he understood, in the sense that he understood it wanted to eat him and that was about it. And when it was five or six giant frogs-- they were still frogs.

What was out of the ordinary was facing them alone. His journeys had rarely left him on his own, and even then, he had more often chosen the safe routes over traipsing through whatever wilderness was around him, in hopes of shaving an hour or two off. It wasn't worth it. He levels his halberd at it as it advances; as far as weapons went, it was an elegant affair of twisted dark metal widening into an axe-like head before tapering off into a spear-like point.

It served its purpose, anyway.

He spots someone else who he can only presume is patrolling the river as well, just up a ways, and calls out. ]

Hey! A little help over here?

[ He slashes out at two of the encroaching frogs, each felled with a giant gash; three more waddle out of the river to replace them. ]

ɪɪɪ. Gɪᴠᴇ ᴀ ʟɪᴛᴛʟᴇ ғᴏʀ ᴛʜᴇ sᴀᴋᴇ ᴏғ sᴛᴀʏɪɴɢ ᴛʀᴜᴇ

[ When it comes to giving back to the community (inasmuch as it had given to him, anyway), Ryan does what Ryan knows best, and that's how to be strong. He hefts large sacks of flour and rice over his shoulders, gathered from kind donators to bring to the communal soup kitchen.

When he arrives, it's about as busy as expected; he stands in the door, unsure of what to do for a moment, before he flags down the first person he sees who looks like they might be putting in some hours as well. ]

Uh. Delivery? Where can I put these?

[ A little help comes immediately as an elf jumps into the fray with a good initiative roll, casting magic missile right by Ryan's nose with some masterful spellshaping. It hits a frog dead on and it pretty much explodes. ]

Hello! Nice weapon!

[ Lup grins at him, fingers sparking a bit with lightning as she readies another spell. ]

[personal profile] lykou 2018-03-28 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Thanks. Nice... magic?

[ That is to say, he's pretty sure it's magic, but he's not sure if that makes any sense as a compliment. The next frog, undeterred by the death of its companions, tried for a bite, but is successfully thwarted and dispatched by way of having its head lopped off.

He looks at the steadily encroaching frogs, briefly wonders how long they can keep coming, then has an idea. ]

Hey. Can you freeze stuff? Or make it cold?
umbrastaff: (68)

[personal profile] umbrastaff 2018-03-28 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She laughs, striking a frog with thunderwave and looking pleased that the wetness made it nice and conductive.

Moving over to the human man, she flicks her wand a little bit, still getting used to the need for one again. ]

I got some Ice Storm in me, think that will freeze these fucks?
lykou: (Default)

[personal profile] lykou 2018-03-28 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's worth a try. It might at least stun them long enough so we can wrangle them all at once.

[ And do what with them, he's not sure. He doesn't mind doing what needs to be done, but if they could somehow redirect the frogs, that might be a better long-term solution. ]
umbrastaff: (62)

[personal profile] umbrastaff 2018-03-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
You got it, my dude!

[She flicks her wand again, collecting the magic as the temperature drops. Hail starts pelting down on the frogs, leaving blooming frost in their wake and fist-sized ice balls everywhere. She upped it by casting it on a higher level, and the frost spreads through the water, freezing it solid in a 40 feet range.]

How's that?
lykou: (Default)

[personal profile] lykou 2018-03-30 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Yeah, that works.

[ He watches the frogs not frozen in the water (or where they stand) slow down as the cold hits them.

He didn't really think far enough ahead to figure out what to do with them after that. ]

Now we just have to find somewhere to put them, where they won't bother people. ...not sure where, though.
umbrastaff: (67)

[personal profile] umbrastaff 2018-04-01 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh... I did not think that far.

[Killing all of them would be a shame, they were animals despite their murder-size.]

Maybe this will scare them off?
lykou: (Default)

[personal profile] lykou 2018-04-02 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Maybe.

[ But still, for good measure, Ryan secures his halberd and gathers up the frozen frogs on shore, putting them back onto the now-icy surface of the river, in hopes that it will at least disorient them.

Calling it a job well done, he turns back, wiping frog slime off on his pants before holding out a hand. ]

I'm Ryan, thanks for the help. I... didn't really want to kill them all.
umbrastaff: (4)

[personal profile] umbrastaff 2018-04-02 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[She gives him a hand with some of the frogs and then takes his hand when he offers it.]

I'm Lup, nice to meet you. I wasn't too fond of the idea of killing all of them, either... so hopefully this helps. You wanna get out of here?
lykou: (Default)

[personal profile] lykou 2018-04-02 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm.

[ He gives one last glance to the frogs, then shrugs. ]

Yeah. I could use a rest. I was sniffing around the forest earlier too. Always makes me kind of tired. Where to?
umbrastaff: (39)

[personal profile] umbrastaff 2018-04-02 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Back to civilization, then. I'm sure we can find somewhere to wash off and have a bite to eat.

[She pokes his halberd's shaft with a smile.]

I like it. It's been a while since I've seen someone not just swinging a sword or axe. Or robot arms.

Robot... arms?

[ He resists the urge to question what a robot is; if there's only one thing he's learned in this strange world so far, it's that he has quite a lot to learn, and that he has no interest in bogging people down with the hundreds of questions he has. ]

I have axes too, actually. Two of them, and one of them does a neat trick, but I don't use them much. I guess I like prefer long weapons. You want to hold it?
umbrastaff: (44)

[personal profile] umbrastaff 2018-04-05 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, he likes ripping them off.

[That makes sense, Lup...]

Oh fuck yeah I do! Gimmie!

[She reaches to grab the halberd, excited to feel it in her hands. It was a pretty badass weapon, after all. As a wizard, she didn't often get to play with giant death blades.]

What does the axe do?
