riverview: june test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on July 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: don't wake the deity

Whether you've just arrived in the city or you've been here a while, and you have a sensitivity to the spiritual, magical, multidimensional, or anything else outside the realm of everyday normal, you've probably noticed a distinct uptick in weird feelings, strange nightmares, or daymares - hallucinations of scary things that are lurking just behind you.

You're not the only one who's noticed it.

There are rumors going around that the psychological and spiritual disturbances are due to the emergence or re-emergence of a deity. Some people say that it's something new that's come through the portal with the sharp increase in new arrivals recently, and others say it's simply an ancient spiritual presence or some ancient incorporeal monster that's been somehow awakened. Gramarye, the top-tier magic research center in Riverview Quarantine, has been studying anyone who's felt this presence, and have recently confirmed that whatever it is, it's being fed by all the extra energies and prayers and thoughts as the city's population increases. The one thing everyone agrees on is that, if the expanding community is feeding the entity, then the entity has got to go! Teams are being assembled across the city to travel into the Abandoned City or the forests outside the walls and look for anything like an abandoned temple that can be destroyed or that contains a relic that can be broken or pacified by a ritual. You're looking for something that will solve the problem, or for other evidence of a way to solve it. The mission might be dangerous, though - there are the usual dangers of venturing out into the wilds, but this time, characters may also face booby traps, spectral or physical guardians, and if the entity itself gets awoken? Someone will have to kill it.

The mission is open to multiple teams, multiple deities can be named (both made up or from characters' various canons), and there can be multiple outcomes. If you complete the mission in a TDM thread, and all characters involved are apped and accepted, you can submit the completed mission thread to the exploration page once you are in the game!

prompt ii: monster miscalculation

The problems the city is having this month are not just ethereal - there's something a little more scientific stirring up trouble. Recently, a large research company in the Quarantine has been trying to develop a monster repellent to provide to explorers who are traveling outside the walls, in hopes of protecting them from attacks. Unfortunately, the containment unit used to store the repellent - which is still in its experimental stages, not even yet tested on animals, let alone people - completely failed, leaking the experimental repellent into the environment around the facility. This facility is close enough to the wall that the repellent has permeated the groundwater and soil in the area and leeched underneath the fences.

Even more unfortunately, the repellent seems to currently have an almost opposite effect on monsters than its intended purpose. It's attracted the attention of a large colony of carnivorous plants that has thrived just outside the wall for decades, living by attacking fellow monsters that are dumb enough to try the fence in that area. Now, instead of going for other monsters, the plants are drawn to the failed repellent and are climbing the walls in search of the source, craving more of it. Residents have been asked to both help clean up the tainted soil by the wall and to fight the carnivorous plants in that area.

The carnivorous plants are in the form of vines ranging from the thickness of a pinkie finger to nearly half a foot thick, that grow incredibly fast, writhing together to form thicker tendrils. The leaves are about a foot wide at their largest and have stingers around the edge that cause a painful rash, and the flowers are large and red or orange, capable of spitting thick globs of acid that can cause burns ranging from very serious (red) to moderate or mild (orange or yellow-orange). They can be defeated especially well with fire, extremely strong pesticides, and edged weapons - vines do not grow back once they've been cut.

prompt iii: wark games

The carnivorous plants aren't the only ones feeling the effects of the spilled experimental repellent. Recently, an intrepid team went on a mission after hearing rumors of a type of monster outside the walls that might be able to be tamed and used as valiant steeds. The team was successful and the possible steeds, which turned out to be Chocobos!

So far, the Chocobos have been comfortably in training, learning how to wear saddles and carry people, but once they get a whiff of the repellent in the air, or gotten a taste of it in their water, they kind of go a little off the wall. Or, over the fence, as the case may be. Highly energized and unwilling to listen, Chocobos who have been exposed to the repellent will get free of their pens and start stampeding around the city. Citizens, it's time to team up to tame the wild Chocobos! Let the wark games begin!

prompt iv: attraction repellent

The local wildlife aren't the only ones affected by the experimental repellent spill. While at first they didn't think it had any effect on sentients, they're having to start reevaluating that particular theory, because residents are definitely feeling it. Whether they're inhaling it in a gust of wind that smells disturbingly of ozone, or sipping a glass filled from a tap in the area of the spill and tasting something like chlorine, it's getting into residents' systems.

Once ingested or inhaled, the repellent can have two effects on an affected character: an overaffectionate mood, or an anti-social mood. The effects can vary in type, swinging from affectionate to cranky and back again at the drop of a hat, and they can also vary in intensity and manifestation - it all depends on body chemistry, both within an affected character, and in the interactions between two characters. So whether or not your characters liked or disliked each other beforehand, maybe their chemistries are very compatible or not compatible at all, and feelings might be a little...out of the ordinary.

Affectionate moods can range anywhere from a casual 'I love you man' to romantic or even carnal ideation; anti-social ones can range from being nervous around crowds or other people to being outright aggressive with other people. The repellent does not remove inhibitions and characters are able to control themselves. Emotions might be heightened, but these effects should not be used to facilitate things that would normally be completely out of character. Please put content warnings in subject lines.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

ii; well hello there!

[personal profile] advanced 2017-06-22 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve's back again. Or maybe it was a misprint on the list and he never left, maybe-- He doesn't know, but it's set him back a few steps and he's too wary to approach him and ask, so he does what any sane and not at all creepy ex-best friend would do... he stalks him.

Which is how he comes to be hiding nearby when an overly aggressive plant decides that it's just not feeling the patriotic love for Cap.

A loud gunshot rings out and the vine around his ankle severs, as Bucky drops into sight and holsters his gun to draw a knife instead. His whole attention is fixed on the plant for now, it's easier that way.]
stevegrogers: (thinking)

( hello there, dear!! )

[personal profile] stevegrogers 2017-06-23 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Admittedly, the gunshot probably should have shocked him more than the emergence of Bucky but well he had his priorities in set. Rolling his body forward, he grabbed for the axe to finish off the plant but his eyes remained on Bucky nearly the entire time.

Until the end of the line.

It echoed in his mind like a drumbeat similar to the ones they used to listen to in the dance halls. More like, he listened to and Bucky moved along to.

Setting down the axe for a moment, he offered a tiny smile, timid almost because he didn't know where they currently stood with one another.

Did he ever, honestly? ]

Hey Buck, you always knew how to make an entrance.

[personal profile] advanced 2017-06-24 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[He has no idea where they stand either, so at least they can be equally awkward and confused with one another.]

It's not dead.

[That's not really the right thing to say to someone smiling and trying to make a connection, but it's so much easier to focus on the plant thing than it is the mess of whatever is in their shared past.]

Stunned. We need to take out the centre.

[He says it with the quiet authority of someone who's fought one of these before. He makes his bed out here most of the time, moves around a lot, so he's had to deal with more than his fair share of monsters.]

[personal profile] stevegrogers 2017-06-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[ Not exactly the kind of reception he wanted but it could have been far worse. Bucky could have snapped and tried to kill him again. So, really, bright side and all.

He nodded his head, moving forward with purpose towards the center of the plant monster, driving the axe right into it.

The mess it caused coated him but thankfully not in acid. Just in plant guts.

Gross. ]

Rogers 100 points, plant 0. [ He turned to look at Bucky again, taking him in with a hitch in his breath. More than anything, he wanted to clutch onto the man and never let him go but he just barely refrained from it. ]

I'm guessing this isn't your first time huh? [ It didn't really occur to him how that sounded. ] It's - this will probably be a weird question but - what do you remember about me?
advanced: (hollow)

[personal profile] advanced 2017-06-25 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
[That effectively tells him that this isn't the Steve who was here before, but it still looks like his Steve. Another point in time? The same point in time but with his memory erased? The idea of anyone messing with Steve's memories automatically raises his hackles, and his expression sours as he stares at Steve.

He wants to lie and say nothing. It's easier, it'll let him make this escape clean. But he knows that won't work, Steve has never let him get away clean and there are too many people here now who know differently. So he goes for the truth, even if it makes things more complicated.]

Bits. Flashes.

[He shrugs, taking a half step back.]

Enough to know that I'm not the man you think I am.
stevegrogers: (wistful)

[personal profile] stevegrogers 2017-06-25 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The distance between them felt deeper than just physical and it pained Steve worse than anything else possibly could. For months, he dreamed about having Bucky in his life again and to make things right for him. Never again would he fail his best friend but hadn't he already judging by the look on Bucky's face?

It hurt worse than not having Bucky in his life at all.

Keeping his hands loosely at his side, he tried to not feel hurt by Bucky backing away from him. They were never so unsure around each other but they had HYDRA to blame for it, didn't they? ]

You're Bucky. [ Steve responded as if it cleared up everything. ] You saved my life again. You're the same punk you've always been and if you let me I can help you figure that out too. You don't have to be the same person, hell, I'm not either, but that heart of yours hasn't changed. No one has ever changed that and never will.
advanced: (cry)

[personal profile] advanced 2017-06-26 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[Stupid. God, Steve was so stupid. How could he still stand there after everything that's happened and say that nothing has changed his heart, or that they can still figure things out together as if it's just that easy? He wants to punch him and hug him all at the same time, because it's so very Steve.

He doesn't do either.

But he does take a half step towards him, brow furrowed.]

You never did know when to give up.

[He's not sure if that's grateful or an admonishment. Both, perhaps.]
stevegrogers: (profile. looking down.)

[personal profile] stevegrogers 2017-06-26 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The tiny step forward made his heart swell in his chest and hope to flood through his system. The man not attacking him or running away from him were very good signs but he wished they were closer to one another. He wished for a lot of things, actually, such as taking the haunted pained look from Bucky's eyes. The one HE caused to happen because of trying to achieve justice.

He couldn't make the same mistake twice and needed to make things right with his best friend.

If Bucky even remembered the best friend aspect. ]

When it comes to you? Never. Till the end of the line, Buck. [ A small grin pulled at his lips and he looked less tense than he had moments ago. ]

Besides, someone's gotta tell you when you're being a jerk. It's like a sworn duty by this point.
advanced: (bewildered)

[personal profile] advanced 2017-06-26 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[He really isn't sure if that is his most hated phrase or his favourite one; it's the one that helped break him out of the Soldier and set him on the path to remembering bits of himself, but it also scratches on the inside of his skull like steel wool, a reminder of all the pieces still missing and how far he is from being the man he saw in the museum.

His expression closes off a little. Clark would call him an idiot for pushing Steve away, but he just can't be the man Steve thinks he is and he'll just end up hurting them both by pretending otherwise.]

The line ended over that ravine, Steve.

[It is a very harsh thing to say and he regrets it almost as soon as it comes out, but he makes no move to take it back.]
stevegrogers: (displeased)

[personal profile] stevegrogers 2017-06-26 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ There were a lot of things Steve braced himself for because he knew to expect the unexpected in his new life but while he could roll with all kinds of punches, Bucky's words hit him square in the gut and left him reeling. A pure sort of pain flooded his face before he could stop it, his mouth hanging open a little bit. But after a few beats, he managed to pull himself together, knowing deep down Bucky wanted to push him away and, well, it wouldn't work.

If Bucky wanted to try so be it but Steve would never give up on him.

He searched for two years for the guy against his better judgement, after all. A few words tossed at him like grenades were barely anything. ]

Not for me. [ The words were quiet, slightly splintered around the edges. ] That line will never be reached for me. Not until my last breath.
advanced: (Default)

[personal profile] advanced 2017-06-26 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Of course it doesn't work and all he's accomplished is hurting Steve. That look in Steve's eyes doesn't make him feel good, it's not even a hollow victory. He drops his gaze for a moment, ashamed.]

Then you have to stop chasing me.

[Thst much he is at least sure of.]

I can't figure out what you are to me if you're always there, it's too hard. [Whoops that's more than he intended to say, too revealing that Steve is still important to him even if he can't work out how exactly.] I'm sorry.
stevegrogers: (determined)

[personal profile] stevegrogers 2017-06-26 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Even if it hurt, he nodded his head, arms folding against his chest. For all intents and purposes a way to shield himself without actually having the shield with him. He felt so out of sorts without it and the way Bucky kept looking at him didn't help much with feeling off blanced.

So much of his reckless behavior circled back to the loss of Bucky but no one really connected those dots too closely. ]

Okay. You let me know when you work it out. [ He offered a small but rather tight smile. ] If you need any help, you'll know where to find me. Doesn't look like either of us is going anywhere anytime soon. [ Letting out a slow breath, he dropped his arms to rest at his sides. ] I'm just glad you're -- okay. You look -- [ less haunted - like home - like every warm feeling I've ever had - but he settled with: ] good.
advanced: (peaceful)

[personal profile] advanced 2017-06-27 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Good isn't exactly how he'd describe himself, he doesn't even think the rare few people here that he'd almost call friends would describe him that way. He's in a tattered pair of jeans and a hoodie, neither particularly clean, it's probably obvious that he's sleeping rough.]

You always were a lousy liar.

[It slips out before he can filter himself.

He freezes, teeth clacking shut on the last word as if to take back the damning words that tell a story of more memories than he's making out to have. Tense, wary, he takes a step backwards preparatory to running.]
