riverview: june test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!
● Reserves are currently OPEN.
● Applications open on July 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.
Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

Whether you've just arrived in the city or you've been here a while, and you have a sensitivity to the spiritual, magical, multidimensional, or anything else outside the realm of everyday normal, you've probably noticed a distinct uptick in weird feelings, strange nightmares, or daymares - hallucinations of scary things that are lurking just behind you.
You're not the only one who's noticed it.
There are rumors going around that the psychological and spiritual disturbances are due to the emergence or re-emergence of a deity. Some people say that it's something new that's come through the portal with the sharp increase in new arrivals recently, and others say it's simply an ancient spiritual presence or some ancient incorporeal monster that's been somehow awakened. Gramarye, the top-tier magic research center in Riverview Quarantine, has been studying anyone who's felt this presence, and have recently confirmed that whatever it is, it's being fed by all the extra energies and prayers and thoughts as the city's population increases. The one thing everyone agrees on is that, if the expanding community is feeding the entity, then the entity has got to go! Teams are being assembled across the city to travel into the Abandoned City or the forests outside the walls and look for anything like an abandoned temple that can be destroyed or that contains a relic that can be broken or pacified by a ritual. You're looking for something that will solve the problem, or for other evidence of a way to solve it. The mission might be dangerous, though - there are the usual dangers of venturing out into the wilds, but this time, characters may also face booby traps, spectral or physical guardians, and if the entity itself gets awoken? Someone will have to kill it.
The mission is open to multiple teams, multiple deities can be named (both made up or from characters' various canons), and there can be multiple outcomes. If you complete the mission in a TDM thread, and all characters involved are apped and accepted, you can submit the completed mission thread to the exploration page once you are in the game!
The problems the city is having this month are not just ethereal - there's something a little more scientific stirring up trouble. Recently, a large research company in the Quarantine has been trying to develop a monster repellent to provide to explorers who are traveling outside the walls, in hopes of protecting them from attacks. Unfortunately, the containment unit used to store the repellent - which is still in its experimental stages, not even yet tested on animals, let alone people - completely failed, leaking the experimental repellent into the environment around the facility. This facility is close enough to the wall that the repellent has permeated the groundwater and soil in the area and leeched underneath the fences.
Even more unfortunately, the repellent seems to currently have an almost opposite effect on monsters than its intended purpose. It's attracted the attention of a large colony of carnivorous plants that has thrived just outside the wall for decades, living by attacking fellow monsters that are dumb enough to try the fence in that area. Now, instead of going for other monsters, the plants are drawn to the failed repellent and are climbing the walls in search of the source, craving more of it. Residents have been asked to both help clean up the tainted soil by the wall and to fight the carnivorous plants in that area.
The carnivorous plants are in the form of vines ranging from the thickness of a pinkie finger to nearly half a foot thick, that grow incredibly fast, writhing together to form thicker tendrils. The leaves are about a foot wide at their largest and have stingers around the edge that cause a painful rash, and the flowers are large and red or orange, capable of spitting thick globs of acid that can cause burns ranging from very serious (red) to moderate or mild (orange or yellow-orange). They can be defeated especially well with fire, extremely strong pesticides, and edged weapons - vines do not grow back once they've been cut.
The carnivorous plants aren't the only ones feeling the effects of the spilled experimental repellent. Recently, an intrepid team went on a mission after hearing rumors of a type of monster outside the walls that might be able to be tamed and used as valiant steeds. The team was successful and the possible steeds, which turned out to be Chocobos!
So far, the Chocobos have been comfortably in training, learning how to wear saddles and carry people, but once they get a whiff of the repellent in the air, or gotten a taste of it in their water, they kind of go a little off the wall. Or, over the fence, as the case may be. Highly energized and unwilling to listen, Chocobos who have been exposed to the repellent will get free of their pens and start stampeding around the city. Citizens, it's time to team up to tame the wild Chocobos! Let the wark games begin!
The local wildlife aren't the only ones affected by the experimental repellent spill. While at first they didn't think it had any effect on sentients, they're having to start reevaluating that particular theory, because residents are definitely feeling it. Whether they're inhaling it in a gust of wind that smells disturbingly of ozone, or sipping a glass filled from a tap in the area of the spill and tasting something like chlorine, it's getting into residents' systems.
Once ingested or inhaled, the repellent can have two effects on an affected character: an overaffectionate mood, or an anti-social mood. The effects can vary in type, swinging from affectionate to cranky and back again at the drop of a hat, and they can also vary in intensity and manifestation - it all depends on body chemistry, both within an affected character, and in the interactions between two characters. So whether or not your characters liked or disliked each other beforehand, maybe their chemistries are very compatible or not compatible at all, and feelings might be a little...out of the ordinary.
Affectionate moods can range anywhere from a casual 'I love you man' to romantic or even carnal ideation; anti-social ones can range from being nervous around crowds or other people to being outright aggressive with other people. The repellent does not remove inhibitions and characters are able to control themselves. Emotions might be heightened, but these effects should not be used to facilitate things that would normally be completely out of character. Please put content warnings in subject lines.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
Choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

so when the call goes out to seek out what the hell was going on in the wild, and a shiny new Steve Rogers volunteers to lead (because that is such a surprise), Tony decides to tag along. incognito (which means in a hoodie with the hood pulled low, armour in stealth mode around him).
it seems simple enough (so Tony knows that it will be anything but), and Tony has to keep himself from humming as they traipse through the jungle to--
a temple.
it is a fucking temple, complete with fog and ominous feeling and everything. good god, would this place just not for once.
by this point, Tony knows that this Steve is far too optimistic for his own good, and when he offers to go a head, Tony laughs and steps up.]
Yeah, how about no. That never ends well okay, never. It's like asking to be turned into an offering. You're going with backup, Steve. And, to add, we are not leaving your sorry ass in that temple, are you insane? What kind of team are you used to back home?
[ he tugs back the hood and gives Steve a pointed stare. he will stand firm on this one, thanks. ]

super soldiers healed. if the functions still worked in the town, he really needed to check that out to be sure. but a problem for another day.
which meant he would not bother and go forward regardless of whether he healed easily or not.
head jerking over towards the sound of a voice, Steve's eyebrows furrowed. who was the guy? why did he look oddly familiar? the guy clearly knew him. ]
The kind of team that I protected. [ he felt a little offended for the sake of his team. only Tony went directly against anything he ever said and at the moment he didn't have to deal with the guy. it should have made the mission smoother and yet. ]
Can you handle yourself? It'll be dangerous in there and it'll be distracting if I have to keep saving you because of your pride to not be left out here. [ yeah, if only he knew. ]
no subject
there is a flicker of recognition, but not the kind of look you would expect from someone who has been with you through thick and thin the way he and his Steve have been. Tony likes to think that, no matter what universe they were in, and no matter what version of Steve was presented to him, he would recognize Steve Rogers when he was in front of him.
apparently that doesn't go both ways.
ignoring the dull ache, Tony waves the concern off, keeping a skeptical look on the blond (god, he looks young) and lets the suit come into view, the bright red and gold unmistakable.
unless, of course, there was just no Iron Man where this Steve was from.]
I think I can handle myself, Rogers. [ his tone is a little less cheerful, more reserved now. like he isn't sure how to deal with this.] I think the question is can you keep up with me in your old age? Or are you really as young as you look in your world?

they were all working on it and were just coming into their own when Steve blinked himself awake in a strange place he had never been before. the current mission gave a purpose and the guy in front of him seemed to want to make it more difficult.
Steve thrived on difficulties, however. he spent his whole life in the midst of a battle, after all. some more inner wars but he kept all of those to himself as much as possible.
a few choice retorts rested on his tongue but were swallowed down when he noticed the red and gold.
oh.
OH. ]
Tony? [ disbelief colored his features and for a moment he forgot all about the ominous looking temple in front of them. ]
Did you get -- taller? [ probably a little too blunt but well. ]
no subject
or at least being the backup that he clearly needed.
he doesn't care if this Steve doesn't recognize him or not, there is no way that he is letting Steve, any Steve, get into danger without him.
of course, he doesn't expect the confused calling of his name, or the question.]
Wha-- taller?
[ he sputters a little, face plate flicking up so that Steve can see his raised eyebrow.
taller? what the hell? that was not what he thought he was going to get.]
How short is the Tony you are used to? Because I have been this height since I was, what, nineteen? I've packed on muscle, but not height. You okay there Rogers? Did no one explain the multiverse to you yet? Or did you ignore that part in the Riverview briefing they gave you?
no subject
kind of hard to ignore that when Thor existed in the first place.
his eyes roamed all over Tony, noting the differences in the armor and a ton of other little details. this Tony didn't seem quite as haunted, especially in his eyes, nor did he seem as fed up when Steve didn't easily grasp onto something he considered trivial.
sleeping for seventy years, really put a damper on being one with the times and advancements.
rubbing at the back of his neck, Steve really, really wished he had his shield with him. he felt less vulnerable with it strapped to his back or clutched tightly within his fingers. ]
Uh, different than you. [ he paused with a frown. ] Sort of but it didn't really make any sense and didn't seem like it could be real. Guess this encounter answers that question. You must -- [ he paused again. ] have another - well, me? And Sam, Wanda, Thor, Bruce, Clint, Natasha? [ a frown tugged at his lips, arms crossing over his chest. ] Bucky.
[ it seemed like a nightmare, honestly. ]
no subject
and Tony also really couldn't blame him for not paying full attention to the Riverview briefing, there was a whole hell of a lot of information to be processed and that wasn't the most important thing to figure out.
still, the way that he looks at Tony like he has no idea who he is (despite the fact that he didn't), and that he really expected Tony, any Tony, to not back him up was a little disheartening. the only thing that makes this a little too sullen for his own likeing is how damn uncomfortable Steve looks.
at least Tony can work with that. way better than standoffish, or dismissive.]
Uh huh, different. Okay. Female then? Or short? Whatever, doesn't matter. Point is, yeah I'm Tony, yes there is another you, I like to call him Captain Salty, but you will probably turn that into terrible innuendo until you meet him, then you will get it. There is-- well details later.
[ he pauses, trying to read what that emotion was there when Steve said Bucky's name. at least that seemed to be the same.] Bucky is here. Two of them. One is a little, uh... off? He seems to be dealing with shit a lot worse than the Bucky I am used to, who might have tried to kill me, but I totally forgave him for that since I kind of deserved it at the time.
[ wait. mission. right. ]
How about we compare notes after we deal with the standing cliche over there, because I am getting weird as fuck energy readings from it not to mention a general feeling of unease and I know it isn't from lack of sleep and too much coffee. [ okay it might be ]

it meant they had to fight. it seemed everything always boiled down to a fight, didn't it? but in every fight someone needed to lead the fray and it fell onto Steve's shoulders - the First Avenger - the man with a plan. if only they knew just how honestly lost he felt beyond the calls to arms.
looking at Tony, he wondered how different his time must be and what sort of bond he shared with his Steve. that seemed so odd and it would take a while for his mind to wrap around and accept it.
captain salty? innuendo? well, both Tony's liked to make him uncomfortable, didn't they? as if he missed some grand joke of some kind. letting out a breath, his eyes drifted over towards the temple again. they really needed to get a move on. ]
I wonder if that's -- [ he broke off to give a curt nod of his head. yes, they needed to find out what the temple held and if it had anything to do with the troublesome deity. ]
Seems like some things never change, no matter what world you're from. [ with a slight smile, he started off in the direction of the temple, feeling the tendrils of unease strengthen the closer he moved in. ] Try to not be too showy, will you? No blasting unless absolutely necessary. [ or at all but he didn't want to be too bossy. ]
Wait, can you tell if anything is in there? Does your -- suit work the same as -- [ he waved his hand off with a frown. ] Do I call you Tony 2 or Tony 1?
no subject
most of the time.
lately-- well, that apparently wasn't always the truth. and Tony regretted that change immensely. he knows that you can only push so far before things snap and not just bend, but--
yeah, he misses it.
the look on this Steve's face makes him wonder if that exists for him, if Tony is always there to be the future to Steve, the unstoppable force that challenges him as well as picks him up when he needs. it isn't something that he is going to delve into, not now, but it makes him wonder if it will be as easy to slide into working with this Steve, if they will click the way he and his own Steve did every time they worked on something they both believed in.
Tony laughs and shrugs.] There are a lot of things that you will find are universal constants actually, I feel like me being a smart ass is one of those things. [ he gives Steve a salute, not at all mocking.]
I won't be flashy as long as you aren't self-sacrificing, how about that? [ it is so easy to slide into something like teasing, but even as he speaks the suit flickers from red and gold to black and blue . which is clearly much less flashy, look he is already trying.
there is a noise as the helmet closes down a moment, Tony trying to get a reading on the temple before:] You call me Tony 2 and I will help Loki prank you. AS for the readings, nothing. Just a shit ton of energy that I can't define, but nothing that gives me a map of the inside.
no subject
if only things were different with Tony, oh how he wished they found a way to connection better because when they managed it they really could take on the world and win. ]
Already feels like home. [ the words were an easy tease, only offset by the slight yearning lingering in his eyes but it disappeared nearly as quickly as it came.
he needed to remember this Tony wasn't his. ]
[ he let out a deep overly dramatic sigh. ] I mean I'll try but you know how I like to make a scene. All eyes on me. [ with a crooked grin, he started to inch closer to the temple entrance and the roaming fog. the sound of drumbeats met his ears and unsettled him for some reason. deeply unsettled him, actually. ]
What about Anthony? [ the words felt muffled the further he stepped into the fog and his eyes stung something fierce. bracing himself, he arrived at the entrance, his head tilting up to see the ancient markings. Hmmm. ]
Do you hear anything?
