riverview: may test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● There are currently 34 Character Slots available.
Reserves are currently CLOSED. Applications are currently OPEN and will close on June 7th at 10:00 pm EST.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: the disappeared ones

Something strange has been happening in the city over the past few weeks, and it's starting to get kind of serious - people are disappearing. It started with a little girl whose parents are still convinced and terrified that she wandered off into the jungle to the north of the city, and things have only gone on from there. So far, a total of 10 children ranging in ages from five to their teens have gone missing, most last seen near one of the exits at the city walls or near where the river flows through the fences of the Inhabited City.

Today, it's reached the point where it's becoming a bit of an emergency. With so many sightings near the exits to the city, the government and Perimeter Guard have set up a joint search project, and are requesting volunteers to help scour the jungles in search of the missing kids. Any volunteers or members of the Perimeter Guard are offered a handout with images of the kids and will be forming a grid to search the entirety of the jungle. Which won't be easy, because it's not just a jungle out there - it's dangerous!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, as residents who've been around for a while might remember from last year, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: hot springs episode

It's been all over the news lately, the restoration of the old abandoned Amusement Park that was successfully cleared out and repowered, and is gearing up for a grand opening. However, thanks to a team led by Aecinos Ixocia and the technical expertise of Aoba Seragaki, there's another entertainment feature that was powered up and cleaned up at the same time, and is ready to open over the weekend - the Hot Springs!

Flyers and other advertising has been put up all around the city to alert city residents to the fact that the springs are opening, and expounding the various amenities and activities that the springs have to offer. Among the touted features are mineral hot spring pools of various temperatures ranging from cool to near-boiling, said to have healing qualities that moisturize and soothe the skin, as well as whisking away stress. There are a lot of testimonials to the fact that the springs have had an impact on chronic pain, headaches, and even temporary, acute illnesses.

If soaking in a hot tub isn't your thing, there are also lap pools, a wave pool, and even a few waterslides that are cleaned up and running smoothly - there's an easy and medium one for the less adventurous, but the other two slides are pretty harrowing! There's also a lazy river with inner tubes intended for couples or groups of friends to laze on and enjoy the warm spring weather. For those with something a little more frisky in mind, there are special tubes intended for romantic pairs or groups that go through a Tunnel of Love that lasts for 10 minutes and affords a pretty decent amount of rose-tinted privacy for lovers to enjoy.

prompt iv: the mud run

Ever heard of Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race, or Ninja Warrior? Well, something similar is brewing in Riverview. With the weather warming up, several companies in the city have contributed to the construction of a difficult obstacle course with three different levels of difficulty to make it challenging for people of all fitness levels. Featuring just about any obstacle you can think of, it tests participants' running, jumping, climbing, and other athletic prowess. It also tests participants' teamwork skills, since several of the obstacles can't be overcome without a little help from a friend or stranger.

But what about people with super powers? Isn't that an unfair advantage? Yep! It sure is! Any participants in the Mud Run are required to use a power dampener of some sort if they're super powered, so everyone is on the same level. Have fun with that!

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

prompt vi: wildcard

Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

[ So, listen, Peter's totally cool with offering a bit of public service. Work as a Surveyor with the Perimeter Guard usually means he's, like, off doing his own thing, running around outside the walls. But sometimes, it means he does stuff like this: protect the citizenry from weird monster threats.

Like these flying feathered death machines.

So he's patrolling the interior, and he hears the telltale sounds of a flock about to pounce, and he moves, stunning a couple with well-aimed blasts from his guns, straight up punching some with the barrels of his blasters when they get low enough for it.

He hears a startled cry in a sea of startled cries, and he jerks around, because— that sounded familiar. Why did that sound familiar? And he's shoving through the crowd as they run past. He clears the throng just as Mantis drops the bird thing to her feet, and he gawks. ]

Mantis? What the hell are you doing here?

(( COUPLE OF THINGS: 1.) Peter is still from post-Vol. 2 but I've seen IW and I'd be down with whatever canonpoint you choose, and 2.) Mantis was here in Riverview before, so he'll probably mention that! ))

AH HELLO

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-22 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
[ Mantis hasn't been here long enough to have had a good chance at finding her friends yet, but Peter has found her first! Someone familiar in an unfamiliar world, particularly one like this that is inhabited by mean bird creatures, gives her an instant sense of relief. ]

I am fighting a swooping monster! [ Sort of. And since they appear to be describing what they're doing, ] What are you doing here?

( Good to know!! Thanks haha, I am still kind of... stumbling my way through writing from the MCU ah oh god )
nostalgiabomb: (020)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-22 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
(( YOU'LL BE FANTASTIC I BELIEVE IN YOU ))

I— I mean, yeah, I see that, but— Whoa—!

[ Speaking of swooping, distracted as he is, he ducks at the last second as one of the creatures makes a dive for him. Apparently these things go for the eyes. Assholes.

He tracks the pterodactyl's movements as it skims above the crowd – too risky of a shot to take right now, with it being so close to so many people, and Peter lets out a frustrated sound as he waits for his shot. ]

I meant, I thought you were back home?
glowfeelers: (03)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-22 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
( WHEEZES HEAVILY )

[ Mantis stays alert, ready to defend but otherwise unable to do much to a flying target at this range. But she trusts that Peter knows what he's doing, and she watches too for an opening to appear - at least until he confuses her with the question, anyway. ]

I was home, but then I was here. [ How else would it have happened, she wonders? ] Is that not what happened to you too? [ Did he stop somewhere in between?! ]
nostalgiabomb: (237)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-22 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ Peter's mouth frequently moves faster than his brain can keep up with it, which is why his lips part and he takes a breath to speak.

But then his brain processes her words, the confusion in her face, and for a second, he forgets about the aggressive dino-bird things to stare at her.

Then, almost reluctantly, ]

Mantis, do you remember being here?
glowfeelers: (02)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-22 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The puzzlement in her face grows twofold, and she too stares back at him. ]

How could I remember a place I have never been to before? [ Was that a trick question? Did she misunderstand? ] Oh! [ Her expression changes as she thinks perhaps she’s got it now. ] Is this a practical joke? Drax is very good at those, did he teach you?
nostalgiabomb: (179)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-22 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ... yeah. That’s the answer he was expecting, and his expression falls a little. ]

Crap.

[ But a pterodactyl screeches above them, and on instinct Peter grabs Mantis’s elbow and pulls her down. The creature swoops, clawing at the air their heads had just vacated, before it flaps its wings, trying to gain altitude again. Peter fires off a blast of electricity, and it lets out another screech, falling out of the air to twitch and writhe on the ground.

Sorry, Petrie.

There’s still a couple more of those bird things circling around, and Peter watches them warily as he speaks to Mantis again. ]

I’m not joking. Seriously. You were here a while ago, but you went home.
glowfeelers: (11)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ Because Peter pulls her down, it's only the rush of wind from its beating wings that hit her and not those wings themselves - or worse - instead. She watches as it falls to the ground, and she is aware that it isn't the last in sight, but her attention is split between that and what Peter is telling her. ]

Oh... [ She still doesn't understand, but her face falls and her antenna droop thinking that she may have done something wrong, or forgotten something very important. ] I'm sorry, I do not remember this place. I have always been home, until I was not home.

[ All the same, she's clearly thinking very hard trying to remember something she really hasn't experienced. ]
nostalgiabomb: (037)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-23 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
[ He winces when he glances over, catches sight of that look on her face. ]

Hey. Don't worry about it. Seriously.

[ And he means that genuinely. It's not her fault, he figures. It's— probably a quirk of the portal? Or else just something really screwy going on.

The two remaining birds screech and circle like vultures, waiting for their moment, and Peter huffs out a breath. ]

Listen. Let's take care of this problem— [ And he jerks his chin up toward the creatures. ] —and we can talk.
glowfeelers: (12)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Mantis seems to feel better when he tells her not to worry, although now she can't stop wondering why her memories don't seem to match with his. Did something go wrong in the sudden journey here?

But he's right, they have a job to do. Mantis nods.

She's barely back into a defensive stance when one of the bird creatures suddenly dives down between the two of them, before she's able to move out of the way. ]
Ah! [ One wing hits her hard enough to knock her over- but it throws the bird off balance too, enough to keep it on the ground screeching at them. Mantis doesn't have a weapon and is too far to put it to sleep, but she so helpfully points out the obvious creature while it is momentarily vulnerable and yells, ] There!
nostalgiabomb: (☆002)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-24 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah—

[ And his voice is slightly strained, as he dances back, away from the bird's impressive wingspan as it flails around. There's a touch of sarcasm, too, because it's kind of hard to miss a big, angry bird, though it goes lost beneath the urgency. ]

I see it—

[ He yelps when the bird-thing lunges for him, snapping its long beak in his direction. It's clumsy on the ground, though, and while it flaps its wings, trying to gain altitude, it's slow going. Peter manages to get a shot in – a stunning blast, because he doesn't actually want to kill the thing – and the creature shrieks in pain before it collapses, unconscious.

He pauses, breathing out a sigh of relief. He turns toward Mantis, lips parting to ask if she's alright, but—

Apparently Peter forgot there were two of these things. Thankfully, he quickly remembers this fact when the second bird slams into his back, driving him to the ground. ]
glowfeelers: (04)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-24 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ While he deals with the creature, Mantis gets herself up off the ground and back on her feet. There's a sense of relief when she sees the bird creature has been brought down- but it's short lived when she realizes the second is swooping down for Peter.

Any warning she tries to shout out isn't quick enough. Peter goes down to the ground, but Mantis is not going to let her friend be eaten!

Those wings come dangerously close to hitting Mantis again when she comes to help Peter, but this time she's ready. The bird screeches then as it notices her, changes its mind about about which of the two of them it wants to sink it's teeth into, turns a snapping beak towards her arm- but Mantis has her hands on it quick enough to subdue it before she loses them. ]
Sleep! [ And down it goes on top of Peter, fast asleep in an instant, and everyone gets to keep their limbs. ]

Are you alright?!
nostalgiabomb: (099)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-24 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ oh good Peter is a big fan of having his limbs exactly where they are

He shoves the creature off, breathless and annoyed that the thing took him down so easily, but Peter offers himself a few allowances. That thing was big, and angry, and also Peter was distracted, so, you know. Shit happens.

The creature is limp and floppy as it flops onto the ground, and even with the rough handling, it keeps right on dozing away. Peter takes a second to weigh the pros and cons of kicking it while it's down, purely out of spite, but he wisely decides to leave it alone. ]

I'm fine.

[ panted out, as he pushes himself up to sit. He'd managed to keep the thing from literally biting his head off, but its talons have done a number on the back of his jacket. (Not the same one he arrived with, but something new in his signature red. Because Peter knows when a color works for him, and he sticks to it. #RavagerAesthetic) He grimaces as he twists around to inspect the damage. ]

Crap. I just bought this.
glowfeelers: (11)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The sleeping beast doesn't get a kick from Mantis either, but it sure does get a face made at it. Take that, mean bird. Her expression goes back to normal once she looks at her friend again though, glad to see only his jacket seems to have taken damage in the scuffle. ]

Are all of the creatures on this planet aggressive? [ The people have been nice to her for the most part, but this encounter was very different! ]
nostalgiabomb: (215)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-25 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
... Sort of?

[ And he says it almost apologetically. Peter spends a lot of time outside the walls as a consequence of his work with the Perimeter Guard, which means he routinely gets attacked or chased by some of the meaner creatures the moon has to offer.

Still seated on the ground, he holsters his guns before he shrugs out of his jacket, scowling at the tattered back. He slings it over his shoulder before turning his attention back to Mantis. ]

You did a good job.
glowfeelers: (06)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-25 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... [ Mantis frowns a little at that. She hadn't realized before how hostile this place could be.

Her face immediately lights back up when he tells her she did a good job, though. Mantis is still the newest of the guardians, and she tries her best to be helpful even though she knows she can't fight the same way everyone else does, so it makes her happy to hear she's been a good teammate. ]

We did a good job.
nostalgiabomb: (032)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ... you know, Peter’s been around Gamora and Rocket and Drax so much that it’s almost unusual to hear something positive like that. Gamora always seems to be of the mind that they could have done better, Rocket’s quick to point out all the ways things went wrong, and Drax— well. He mostly talks about how awesomely he did.

It’s why Peter looks genuinely surprised for a second before he smiles a little smugly. ]

Yeah. We did, huh?

[ He hauls himself to his feet, brushing himself off. ]

You hurt at all?
glowfeelers: (02)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-25 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
We did!

[ Positivity lights her smile, and really, she mostly seems pleased that she could help. Mantis is also glad that she's managed to find a friend in an unfamiliar - and apparently, sometimes hostile - world.

She answers his question with a shake of her head. ]
I am alright. Has only your jacket taken damage?
nostalgiabomb: (124)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-26 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
That, and my pride.

[ But his pride tends to be resilient as hell, and while he'd never say so, it could stand to take a bit of a beating.

He looks toward the sky again, verifying that they're clear of any other circling creatures. A couple members of the Perimeter Guard in the area are already taking of clean-up, carefully taking the unconscious bird-things and relocating them.

Which means, ]

We should probably talk.

[ A beat, then, ]

You wanna get a drink?

[ Because even if it's still the middle of the day, alcohol is the best accompaniment for any conversation that might be even remotely difficult. ]
glowfeelers: (10)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-26 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Mantis nods. ] A drink would be enjoyable.

[ The idea that there are socially appropriate and inappropriate times of the day for alcoholic consumption is lost on her. And even if it weren't, well, the fact that Peter is talking about drinks that are specifically alcoholic in the first place has flown right past her too. ]

Where shall we go? [ Wherever he goes she'll follow - she still has no idea where anything is here, and it seems like he does. ]
nostalgiabomb: (045)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-27 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ He takes a stock of their surroundings.

Predictably, when it became clear there was no going home for a while, one of the first things Peter did was acquaint himself with the locations of some of the cheapest, dingiest bars with the strongest pours. There's one not too far from here, Peter's sure, and it isn't too much of a dive. Not that he thinks Mantis would care, but he doesn't know what she remembers and what she doesn't, and the last thing they need, right now, is to get caught up in the middle of the kinds of brawls that routinely plague those kinds of bars. ]

C'mon. This way.

[ And he leads her to the bar in question.

It's... decent. Not the trendiest place, nor is it the cleanest, but it's fine. A compromise, considering Peter's used to getting the cheap stuff. Middle of the day as it is, the bar is sparsely populated, with a few patrons seated at a far corner.

He plops himself down on a high stool at the bar, gesturing for Mantis to join him. ]

You know what you want?
glowfeelers: (03)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-27 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Without the threat of screeching bird creatures to distract her from thinking of what could be either a very worrisome memory or somehow an actual disruption in time, Mantis spends her time following Peter thinking harder and getting more and more confused and concerned. ]

Oh… [ What do people drink here? There is someone nearby with a weird blue drink when she looks around, and she hasn't a clue what it is, so naturally, ] One of those?

[ There's a question in her voice that the barkeep seems to have ignored, as that's what he gets her. ]

Um, [ Mantis has her hands together as usual, but it's easy to tell from the way she idly fidgets with her fingers that something is bothering her. ] I do not think I have experienced this planet, so I do not understand… because even if I have forgotten, you are here and have been here, why do I not remember you leaving either?
nostalgiabomb: (027)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-30 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Peter takes a second to study Mantis, watching her carefully. She’s fidgeting, and she looks uncertain, and— yeah, she’s definitely Mantis. Not that that was ever in question, really, but apparently folks from parallel worlds is a thing around here. So she might be Mantis, sure, but she might not be the Mantis he knows or the Mantis he remembers?

But— no. A lot of that body language is familiar. The fidgeting, the hesitance, the hunch of her shoulders and the twisting of her hands.

At her apology, he lifts a hand, meaning for the gesture to be placating and reassuring. ]

It’s okay. Seriously. I think— the portal thing? The one that brought you here? It does some weird stuff, so— don’t worry.

[ There’s a lot about the portal that Peter doesn’t understand, honestly, which is why he gives a helpless sort of shrug. ]

Honestly, I dunno how it all works.
glowfeelers: (11)

[personal profile] glowfeelers 2018-05-31 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ Weird sounds about right to her, if nothing else. And she appreciates the reassurance he offers, even without an explanation of the situation to accompany it. ]

Weird is certainly how I would describe it!

[ Mantis takes a moment then to pick up the glass the bartender had given her and start in on her drink. The taste is new to her and she makes a bit of a face at the first sip, looking inquisitive as she works out what to make of it, but ultimately drinks on without much more puzzlement. ]

What about our friends? And the Earth people? I was going to help- [ Brows furrowed, she stops herself short when she realizes Peter is supposed to be a part of that group on Titan too, and yet she sits here face to face with a Peter that seems unconcerned with any of that. ] Has your memory been altered too?
nostalgiabomb: (098)

[personal profile] nostalgiabomb 2018-05-31 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
[ Peter, apparently, has opted for a dark stout, and he scoops it up with a nod of thanks. He glances over at her, wondering for a second if that drink might be too strong for her.

He'd rather not carry Mantis if she ends up too drunk to walk, but if needs must.

The glass is at his lips when she asks that question, and Peter freezes, staring at her. He swallows down the mouthful, looking seriously confused. Then, ]

—Earth people? What are you talking about? What Earth people?
