Something strange has been happening in the city over the past few weeks, and it's starting to get kind of serious - people are disappearing. It started with a little girl whose parents are still convinced and terrified that she wandered off into the jungle to the north of the city, and things have only gone on from there. So far, a total of 10 children ranging in ages from five to their teens have gone missing, most last seen near one of the exits at the city walls or near where the river flows through the fences of the Inhabited City.
Today, it's reached the point where it's becoming a bit of an emergency. With so many sightings near the exits to the city, the government and Perimeter Guard have set up a joint search project, and are requesting volunteers to help scour the jungles in search of the missing kids. Any volunteers or members of the Perimeter Guard are offered a handout with images of the kids and will be forming a grid to search the entirety of the jungle. Which won't be easy, because it's not just a jungle out there - it's dangerous!
Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.
The problem with walls? They only go so high.
While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, as residents who've been around for a while might remember from last year, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.
It's been all over the news lately, the restoration of the old abandoned Amusement Park that was successfully cleared out and repowered, and is gearing up for a grand opening. However, thanks to a team led by Aecinos Ixocia and the technical expertise of Aoba Seragaki, there's another entertainment feature that was powered up and cleaned up at the same time, and is ready to open over the weekend - the Hot Springs!
Flyers and other advertising has been put up all around the city to alert city residents to the fact that the springs are opening, and expounding the various amenities and activities that the springs have to offer. Among the touted features are mineral hot spring pools of various temperatures ranging from cool to near-boiling, said to have healing qualities that moisturize and soothe the skin, as well as whisking away stress. There are a lot of testimonials to the fact that the springs have had an impact on chronic pain, headaches, and even temporary, acute illnesses.
If soaking in a hot tub isn't your thing, there are also lap pools, a wave pool, and even a few waterslides that are cleaned up and running smoothly - there's an easy and medium one for the less adventurous, but the other two slides are pretty harrowing! There's also a lazy river with inner tubes intended for couples or groups of friends to laze on and enjoy the warm spring weather. For those with something a little more frisky in mind, there are special tubes intended for romantic pairs or groups that go through a Tunnel of Love that lasts for 10 minutes and affords a pretty decent amount of rose-tinted privacy for lovers to enjoy.
Ever heard of Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race, or Ninja Warrior? Well, something similar is brewing in Riverview. With the weather warming up, several companies in the city have contributed to the construction of a difficult obstacle course with three different levels of difficulty to make it challenging for people of all fitness levels. Featuring just about any obstacle you can think of, it tests participants' running, jumping, climbing, and other athletic prowess. It also tests participants' teamwork skills, since several of the obstacles can't be overcome without a little help from a friend or stranger.
But what about people with super powers? Isn't that an unfair advantage? Yep! It sure is! Any participants in the Mud Run are required to use a power dampener of some sort if they're super powered, so everyone is on the same level. Have fun with that!
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

He shoves the creature off, breathless and annoyed that the thing took him down so easily, but Peter offers himself a few allowances. That thing was big, and angry, and also Peter was distracted, so, you know. Shit happens.
The creature is limp and floppy as it flops onto the ground, and even with the rough handling, it keeps right on dozing away. Peter takes a second to weigh the pros and cons of kicking it while it's down, purely out of spite, but he wisely decides to leave it alone. ]
I'm fine.
[ panted out, as he pushes himself up to sit. He'd managed to keep the thing from literally biting his head off, but its talons have done a number on the back of his jacket. (Not the same one he arrived with, but something new in his signature red. Because Peter knows when a color works for him, and he sticks to it. #RavagerAesthetic) He grimaces as he twists around to inspect the damage. ]
Crap. I just bought this.
no subject
Are all of the creatures on this planet aggressive? [ The people have been nice to her for the most part, but this encounter was very different! ]
no subject
[ And he says it almost apologetically. Peter spends a lot of time outside the walls as a consequence of his work with the Perimeter Guard, which means he routinely gets attacked or chased by some of the meaner creatures the moon has to offer.
Still seated on the ground, he holsters his guns before he shrugs out of his jacket, scowling at the tattered back. He slings it over his shoulder before turning his attention back to Mantis. ]
You did a good job.
no subject
Her face immediately lights back up when he tells her she did a good job, though. Mantis is still the newest of the guardians, and she tries her best to be helpful even though she knows she can't fight the same way everyone else does, so it makes her happy to hear she's been a good teammate. ]
We did a good job.
no subject
It’s why Peter looks genuinely surprised for a second before he smiles a little smugly. ]
Yeah. We did, huh?
[ He hauls himself to his feet, brushing himself off. ]
You hurt at all?
no subject
[ Positivity lights her smile, and really, she mostly seems pleased that she could help. Mantis is also glad that she's managed to find a friend in an unfamiliar - and apparently, sometimes hostile - world.
She answers his question with a shake of her head. ] I am alright. Has only your jacket taken damage?
no subject
[ But his pride tends to be resilient as hell, and while he'd never say so, it could stand to take a bit of a beating.
He looks toward the sky again, verifying that they're clear of any other circling creatures. A couple members of the Perimeter Guard in the area are already taking of clean-up, carefully taking the unconscious bird-things and relocating them.
Which means, ]
We should probably talk.
[ A beat, then, ]
You wanna get a drink?
[ Because even if it's still the middle of the day, alcohol is the best accompaniment for any conversation that might be even remotely difficult. ]
no subject
[ The idea that there are socially appropriate and inappropriate times of the day for alcoholic consumption is lost on her. And even if it weren't, well, the fact that Peter is talking about drinks that are specifically alcoholic in the first place has flown right past her too. ]
Where shall we go? [ Wherever he goes she'll follow - she still has no idea where anything is here, and it seems like he does. ]
no subject
Predictably, when it became clear there was no going home for a while, one of the first things Peter did was acquaint himself with the locations of some of the cheapest, dingiest bars with the strongest pours. There's one not too far from here, Peter's sure, and it isn't too much of a dive. Not that he thinks Mantis would care, but he doesn't know what she remembers and what she doesn't, and the last thing they need, right now, is to get caught up in the middle of the kinds of brawls that routinely plague those kinds of bars. ]
C'mon. This way.
[ And he leads her to the bar in question.
It's... decent. Not the trendiest place, nor is it the cleanest, but it's fine. A compromise, considering Peter's used to getting the cheap stuff. Middle of the day as it is, the bar is sparsely populated, with a few patrons seated at a far corner.
He plops himself down on a high stool at the bar, gesturing for Mantis to join him. ]
You know what you want?
no subject
Oh… [ What do people drink here? There is someone nearby with a weird blue drink when she looks around, and she hasn't a clue what it is, so naturally, ] One of those?
[ There's a question in her voice that the barkeep seems to have ignored, as that's what he gets her. ]
Um, [ Mantis has her hands together as usual, but it's easy to tell from the way she idly fidgets with her fingers that something is bothering her. ] I do not think I have experienced this planet, so I do not understand… because even if I have forgotten, you are here and have been here, why do I not remember you leaving either?
no subject
But— no. A lot of that body language is familiar. The fidgeting, the hesitance, the hunch of her shoulders and the twisting of her hands.
At her apology, he lifts a hand, meaning for the gesture to be placating and reassuring. ]
It’s okay. Seriously. I think— the portal thing? The one that brought you here? It does some weird stuff, so— don’t worry.
[ There’s a lot about the portal that Peter doesn’t understand, honestly, which is why he gives a helpless sort of shrug. ]
Honestly, I dunno how it all works.
no subject
Weird is certainly how I would describe it!
[ Mantis takes a moment then to pick up the glass the bartender had given her and start in on her drink. The taste is new to her and she makes a bit of a face at the first sip, looking inquisitive as she works out what to make of it, but ultimately drinks on without much more puzzlement. ]
What about our friends? And the Earth people? I was going to help- [ Brows furrowed, she stops herself short when she realizes Peter is supposed to be a part of that group on Titan too, and yet she sits here face to face with a Peter that seems unconcerned with any of that. ] Has your memory been altered too?
no subject
He'd rather not carry Mantis if she ends up too drunk to walk, but if needs must.
The glass is at his lips when she asks that question, and Peter freezes, staring at her. He swallows down the mouthful, looking seriously confused. Then, ]
—Earth people? What are you talking about? What Earth people?
no subject
The people from Earth! [ Very informative! But what were their names again? ] Doctor Weird, the Armoured Man, and A Spider. [ Nailed it. ] Nebula told me we must go to Titan, and we found them there when we arrived.
[ And somehow she now has a second drink pressed to her lips already. ]
no subject
In a different moment, Peter would tell Mantis to slow down on the drinking, but right now, he’s mostly busy being completely baffled. ]
... I seriously have no idea what you’re talking about.
[ In that tone of voice that also asks, “Are you making this up?”
But like he said, the portal did some weird stuff and apparently had a funny sort of sense of humor. Peter runs his thumb along the side of his glass frowning at the dark alcohol before huffing out a sharp breath.
Then, quickly, like he’s trying to rip off a bandage, ]
Before I got here, we were only a few days’ worth of travel away from what was left of Ego.
no subject
Oh... [ It's shaping up to be a confusing day for the both of them, it seems. Mantis shakes her head and frowns, puzzled. ] It has been much longer than a few days since we left Ego.
Before I arrived here, we were on Titan. We were awaiting Thanos, and you did not like the Armoured Man's plan to defeat him. You said that it sucks.
no subject
Well, then. Here’s a lengthy, heavy pause, as Peter turns those words over in his head. Then, ]
... We were fighting Thanos?
[ Rather than disbelieving, he just sounds— uncertain. Wary, rather than skeptical.
Peter has always figured theywould go toe-to-toe with that bastard eventually, but if he’s honest, Gamora had always made the Mad Titan sound terrifying, and like some kind of bogeyman made manifest. “We’re not ready,” she had told Peter over and over, and since they arrived in Riverview, she routinely ran him through drills, trying to get him physically prepared, for whatever good that might do.
He drags a hand down his face. ]
Well... [ A beat of silence. ] ... Shit.
no subject
[ The downward curl of her antenna give away her worrying mind, but she thinks - there has to be something good from this, doesn't there? ]
Does this mean that I am from the future? If you are from the past and I am from the future, and I tell you the future, will that change the past?
no subject
I dunno. Maybe?
[ And he looks as uncertain as he sounds. ]
I think... it might depend on if I remember whatever you tell me when I go back. [ He licks his lips, frowning down at the bar top, then back at Mantis. ] I mean, you don’t remember a thing about this place, right? Even though you were here a while ago.
[ also there’s some bullshit he remembers from movies, stuff about altering the fabric of the timespace continuum, about how the smallest changes could make it so you were never born, or something. He doesn’t want anyone to start fading away like Marty McFly. ]
no subject
Having been reminded that memory doesn't seem to stick between this universe and the one they're from, Mantis deflates along with her idea. Quiet, she holds her glass in both hands and continues to drink from it. But regardless of their current differences, finally she perks up again. ]
I am still Mantis, and you are still Peter Quill. I do not fully understand this universe or its weird portal, but I am glad that I am not alone!
no subject
Adorable.
And Peter kind of smiles a little, startled out of the thoughts buzzing through his head. (They're fighting Thanos? Seriously? Thanos? What the fuck? He's going to have to tell Gamora, or at least Mantis will have to tell Gamora, and— oh jeez, Gamora is not going to be happy—)
Anyway. Have a companionable pat on the shoulder, Mantis. ]
I'm really glad you're back.
[ And he means it genuinely. ]
... I mean, I'm less happy about the whole displacement thing? But— it's really nice seeing you.
no subject
I am glad! It is nice that I can see you too! [ Literally, but she really is relieved to discover she hasn't been completely separated from the guardians - being with them is the first time Mantis has ever experienced something close to what she imagined family to be, and she is grateful to still have at least some of that weird little family here too. ]
Have you also seen the others?
no subject
[ The tiny sapling version, not the snarky pre-teen version. ]
He’s, uh. At daycare, right now.
[ ... probably wreaking havoc. Thoughts and prayers to the daycare attendants. ]
no subject
[ Regardless of the conversation they literally just had about differing timelines, Mantis is still in the mindset that Gamora is in danger. But here that danger seems to have passed, or to have never existed - and Groot! Groot is here too! ] At daycare? [ Her curious look suggests she doesn't quite understand. ] He is cared for during the day?
( ah hello I have been queued but accepted once there is room in the mcu cast!! one day uwu )
no subject
[ Oh, jeez, the way she sways is worrying, and Peter places a hand between her shoulder blades steady her.
He also, very subtly, very slowly, pushes aside the glass of blue alcohol. Apparently Peter is cutting her off. ]
Gamora and I have to work for the Perimeter Guard during the day. So sometimes we drop him off with someone who can watch him while we're on the clock.
[ peter aren't you on the clock right now? why are you getting drinks?
... Well. Peter never claimed he was a responsible employee.
But, uh. The strange sort of relief that had washed over her didn't slip his notice, and neither did the phrasing. ("She is safe?" and not "She's okay?") And maybe he can chalk that up to a quirk in Mantis' vocabulary, but, if they're fighting Thanos...
With more than a little trepidation, ]
... Why wouldn't Gamora be safe?
