swipes: a friendr meme

Any new arrival to the city has seen the ad for a free app popping up on their devices, and anyone who's been around for a while probably has a profile and has used it a bit. It's almost universal in the city - Friendr, a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app. The default color scheme can be seen below, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

And what is the main story you're working on? Some big cover up or...?

Um. It's kind of complicated to explain, but basically there are these cults that are doing things to bring about the end of my world and there are things that are going on that we can't explain. Like demons and bilocation and stuff.

And the cults are combinations of ancient mathematicians who think they can end the universe with music and cultists who believe in the ancient prophecy of Sumerian goddess Tiamat through music and demons.

There's also a shadowy corporation that may be involved with either one or both of the cults and doing all sort of terrible stuff around my friend Richard and his family.

[...Well...Rey wasn't expecting anything like that so...it's a bit much to take in over text.]

I think you found a way to explain it. Very complicated, and it sort of makes sense. I'm not familiar with demons because they're not in my world, but cults and gangs I know of.

Did you have any other resources that could have helped you in your world?

There's my studio, Richard and this kid who has way more answers than I do. Or Richard does. But he's... Well, he really enjoys being as mysterious as he can be. He kind of thinks he's like James Bond or some kind of mentor thing.

It's annoying.

I may know a thing or two about mentors being mysterious...and how frustrating that can be.

Have you found anything here that may help you in the future? Or connect back to your world? Have you tried asking this, James Bond, for help?

[Alex is just so amused by that. Really, really amused.]

I wish I could, but unfortunately in my world James Bond isn't real. But who knows, maybe he will be in a different one? And I've found some things. Mostly that magic is real. And angels are real.

They're not supposed to be back home. I mean, they probably are but they're not supposed to be.

Mysterious mentors are the worst. Especially because he's not a very good one.

[...Maybe Alex needs to explain who is real and who is not real in her world, because Rey really thought James Bond was an actual person.]

Good to know..but maybe someone like them will show up here? Stranger things have happened.

It could be your mentor is...hiding something, or it's complicated for them. Hence the mysterious nature. Allows them to be detached and almost forces you to stay away.

I actually keep hoping that my friend Richard would show up. But it's been so long. And he'd probably lose his mind if he actually did show up. Too many things that he can't explain.

And Simon is hiding everything. If you looked up mysterious, there'd probably be a picture of him in the dictionary.

[Basically all the people in Alex's life other than Nic were mysteries. It's annoying, and it makes her use enigmatic way too much in her descriptions.]

I'm sure your friend would get used to it...eventually. Everyone seems to get a handle on things after a week or two.

Richard... Is a skeptic at heart. So he'd probably think we were all suffering a mass hallucination or something.

He doesn't handle things outside of his purview all that well.

You can only have your head stuck in the sand for so long. If he came here, he'd have to adapt or struggle. Maybe you could help him with that.

Not letting someone punch him would become a full time job.

I take it, that it wouldn’t be a paying job? [ Trying to joke or tease.]

It should be, honestly. Though maybe if I let them hit him, I could get paid for offering my testimony in the lawsuit.

With any job, you should get paid for it.

How long have you been working with Richard?

I do get paid for the show, just not anything that goes along with not smacking him.

About three years, I think? It depends on if you count the times that he's just kind of disappeared. He can be an ass that way.

I thought you said you were a reporter, or do you do work in other forms too?

He disappeared? As in, didn't say anything and just...left?

I do reporting for my own show. It's a podcast thing. Like radio on demand. All audio.

Yeah. Well, the first time he said "goodbye Alex." And then the second time he just left. But he had reasons. Decent ones too. But it still sucked.

That's....interesting. I've only used it to communicate messages, that's basically it.

If he left so many times, why do you continue to work with him?

Yeah, in my world they're used for everything from messages to movies, to news, to podcasts. And podcasts can cover basically any subject you can imagine.

He... It's really really complicated. He's complicated.

So how are you paid for podcasts if everyone else does them?

Do you owe him a debt of some sort? Is that why?

Ads mostly. A lot of ads. And we're a public station so we get some funding that way. But mostly it's the ads. Movies, food, mattresses, socks, underwear, I've had to read copy for them all.

[Alex has nightmares about a lot of things, but reading that one meundies ad will definitely play into them for a long time to come.

As for the rest... Alex sighs, because complicated with a captial C.]]

Well, not really no. I mean, I did kind of blow up his life and uncover a lot of his secrets and expose the fact that his dead wife wasn't actually dead and...

Yeah, I just realized how completely insane I sound. But I care for him and I worry about him, and we have a...

[A beat before Alex decides on.]

Connection. We're at the center of this thing together.

You're paid to read advertisements on your podcast...and most reporters make their livelihood on this? It sounds....a bit too easy, no offense. It's out of my realm and I'm trying to understand.

[Wouldn't that be too easy of a way to make a living? Say things into a microphone for others to hear. No actual work involved--at least that's what she thinks. There aren't reporters on Jakku. She hasn't a clue what a reporter actually does.]

A connection doesn't mean anything if he left you. If he gave you a choice and still left.

[That may have hit too close to home for Rey, but she was trying to understand. Trying to listen and not solve a problem (it seemed like a problem to her if this 'Richard' left Alex, not trustworthy at all). Rey takes a moment to reread Alex's words on her screen and to get a better handle on her emotions.]

It's not that you sound insane, Alex, but if you have a friend leave you..the connection isn't worth anything. Having that connection and having them still make that choice to leave....it only hurts more.

The reading of the ads is only just a part of it. There's a lot more too it. There's investigation and interviews and research and flying half-way across the planet and getting blindfolded so you can see something that's not supposed to be real. It's definitely not an easy life, but if you love it, then you keep doing it, I guess. I mean, I put in like seventy hours a week and haven't slept in two years, so...


[But the rest. The rest takes a moment to reply to it.]

Maybe. But. I can't just chose to turn my feelings off and stop loving him because he's an inconsiderate asshole who has no idea how to really be a human being sometimes.

[And Alex doesn't even notice what she said.]

[They lead similar lives--working for so long, barely sleeping, barely doing anything but work to survive. That should be something that Rey should focus on, but she can only focus on the next text. The feelings that Alex has for this 'Richard,' who isn't worthy of the woman's attention if he kept leaving her.

...So Rey is biased on this, but she is trying to help a friend as best as she possibly can.]

You need to. You need to place distance between yourself and him--besides the physicality of it. He's done this to you multiple times.

He will keep doing it. Again, and again. Regardless if he returns those feelings or not.

If you gave him the opportunity to change, and he didn't take it--then it isn't meant to be, regardless of how many times you think it might be the case, it's not.

You deserve better.
