swipes: a friendr meme

Any new arrival to the city has seen the ad for a free app popping up on their devices, and anyone who's been around for a while probably has a profile and has used it a bit. It's almost universal in the city - Friendr, a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app. The default color scheme can be seen below, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

Really? Does it bother you that so many people know who you are? Or at least know the fictionalized idea of you?

Not really. I'm used to it now. Though I admit when I first arrived here, I was concerned how my patients would react.

But I figure that the ones who stick around care about my skill more than my reputation.

I can understand that. So you practice here, then?

Not that I'm thinking of avoiding you, of course.

Sure do. Surgery when it's needed, general practice when it's not.

You do what you gotta do.

Nah, it's always good to know who the doctor is in the case of a medical emergency.

Was it hard adjusting from what medicine was like back home to here?

[jolting]

Not really. I have twentieth-century knowledge. It was actually more of an adjustment coming here. I live in a small town in Maine, you see, and for years I knew every single person in town. We've gotten more new people but nothing like here.

It was a little bizarre knowing next to nobody.

I can imagine. It must have been culture shock.

What part of Maine?

[jolting]

It was.

We were close to the shore, and we had a forest. I can't really tell you more than that since I've never been outside Storybrooke.

Really? Can I ask how come?

[jolting]

Because we couldn't. There was always magic of some kind keeping us in town.

[11calls]

Wow. Seriously? Why would someone want to do that?

[jolting]

It was mostly a power thing. Some times it was for our protection. Imagine the world at large learning that there were werewolves and fairies out there.

Who even knows what they'd do once they knew I could bring back the dead.

It would be a mess. I think normal people can't really handle stuff like that.

[She's including her little miss hasn't slept in two years self in that, but yeah.]

Fairies and werewolves are an interesting combination though. I would have assumed it'd have been like vampires before fairies.

[jolting]

That was our logic, too.

Vampires are from a different world, and none of them made it over, thankfully. We do have a giant, though.

A giant? Like Andre or more like Jack and the Beanstalk sorts?

How many different worlds are people from there?

[jolting]

He was the one guarding the beanstalks, but they shrunk him down to be less conspicuous. He doesn't seem to mind.

Five. Most of them were born in the same world, but they went to others for one reason or another.

Wow. I know it probably shouldn't surprise me that they have the ability to do that, but it does for some reason.

Was it easy for people to travel between worlds?

[jolting]

Depends on the method. Magic mirrors aren't very common, and not every tornado is going to sweep you off to another land. Magic beans made it easy to travel between realms, but they were very rare-- which is where our giant came in, as it happened. He was growing new beanstalks for us.

So there really is no "easy" method, just varying types of difficult ones.

Wow. That is a lot of ways though. Do people randomly find themselves in one of those worlds from like normal ones?

[jolting]

You mean the World Without Magic? Well, there was that Connecticut Yankee who was in King Arthur's court. Dorothy, of course. Alice, and Wendy and her brothers. But I think they're the exception rather than the rule.

Sorry, calling it "normal" was probably really offensive. I definitely apologize. Still learning the whole new terminology thing!

So Mark Twain was right? I'll need to remember that.

[jolting]

Don't worry about it. Besides, "normal" is subjective. I can't really fault you on your perceptions.

I wouldn't say that. He just happened to write a version of the real story. It happens all the time. Miss Shelley's novel has some elements of truth to it, but it's not completely accurate.

Did you ever meet her? Mary Shelley, I mean.

Nope. Never heard of her until I got to Storybrooke.
