swipes: a friendr meme

Any new arrival to the city has seen the ad for a free app popping up on their devices, and anyone who's been around for a while probably has a profile and has used it a bit. It's almost universal in the city - Friendr, a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app. The default color scheme can be seen below, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

To be honest, I know very little of "soldiering". If you'd like a recommendation for an illuminating bit of literature or where to find decent and affordable wine, I'd be more than happy to assist.

Well, I'm not NOT looking for recommendations. Someone's been saying I'd probably like it if I started reading more. For fun.

I mean, illumination and fun aren't exactly on the same level. But I'm interested in things that are interesting. And I appreciate the offer. For the record.

I happen to find illuminating reading to be fun, but to each his own, I suppose. What is it precisely you find interesting, Finn?

I guess I'm more interested in action. Missions, target practice. Getting out and seeing things. Learning about people.

I try to leave researching off until I need to do it.

Ah, I see. Well, then, I'm glad to know whom to call if I'm in need of action. I prefer to sort all the research out beforehand, then, when it comes down to it, and the world is poised to end, someone already knows why and we need not waste time.

Sorry, do you deal with a lot of worlds poised to end? Does it just happen so much that you'd rather be safe than sorry with your research?

I believe once was enough to suggest better preparation is in order to assure once was also "only".

Fair point. I'm not in much of a world saving habit, but I do think it's better to be prepared. You know, for any kind of worst case scenario.

Makes a nice surprise if nothing ends up going wrong.

A true realist, Finn. I think I like you. Expect the worst always and one can never be anything save satisfied or pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, that's what I think, too.

It's good to have some control over what happens to you. Even if it's just figuring out how to react to something that might not happen.

True, but can one truly be prepared for something if it's never before transpired? Can we really know how we might react in any given situation?

I never did study philosophy. Everything wound up leaning into the soldiering.

I'd like to think it's possible, though. Even if no one knows what they'll do until they get there, I think you can still try to plan for what might not happen.

True, that sort of mentality is the basis of thought for all pioneers in their fields, as well. One can never assume the outcome will be as planned, after all.

Yeah. Following a plan is usually when things start to fall apart on me.

I'm on month 9. Goes by a lot faster than I thought it would. Doesn't feel like it's been close to that long.

I have to get home. Before the Quarantine is done, if I can. Things weren't all that great when I wound up here. Or the last time I got to... check in, I guess.

Yeah. Doesn't exactly make the waiting easier. Kind of gives you all the time you need to think about everything that can go wrong once you're back.

Anyone here not trying to tear down the walls and work out precisely how to manipulate the pulses of the portal which brought us here is doing the same, Finn. Let no one tell you otherwise. I don't fault them, I'm just as guilty, but simply remaining here, with no protest, is an escape in itself. And why not? Here, we have relative peace, at least in contrast to the turmoil from which many of us were pulled, or we were at the brink of death, some of us. If and when our benefactors work out sending us home, it will be to the precise moment from which we departed. Staying here, we miss nothing. It's downright seductive in its allure, isn't it?
