swipes: a friendr meme

Any new arrival to the city has seen the ad for a free app popping up on their devices, and anyone who's been around for a while probably has a profile and has used it a bit. It's almost universal in the city - Friendr, a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app. The default color scheme can be seen below, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

I wouldn't say so, no. Then again, I also don't believe in curses.

Who's Henry?

[There's a small grin and a wave of her hand.]

Ahh, you sound like Henry. So maybe you are cursed.

Henry is my dad, but he's under a curse so he doesn't remember me...or think I'm his daughter. But, I'll figure something out. In the mean time, I have two great Dad's taking care of me.

[Well, okay, he'll give a little wave back.]

[He'll refrain from suggesting that her father is pretending not to remember her for some sort of ridiculous reason. That seems mean, even for him.]

[There's a smile. He seems a bit unsure about the situation? Or maybe he hasn't had enough practice talking with kids.]

My Dad's? Yes. There's Victor, and Jim. We all live together.

My actual parents are Henry Mills and Cinderella, but since she's cursed she goes by Jacinda.

[Only his own for long periods of time, and Charlie has been independent for quite some time now.]

Does your mother remember you?

[This seems like a situation where the girl made a story to find a reason for why her father left her. It's sad, but it would be better if Victor and Jim handled that situation.]

Oh? Your Alex? [Grinning a little.] I know who she is, and she's really nice.

She remembers me...but she doesn't remember the Enchanted Realm, or our lives before. But Victor gets it, he was cursed too.

I should explain, see where I'm from, Fairytales are actually real and not just stories. But, everyone is under a curse and they don't remember who they really are.

[He smirks slightly when she says that Alex is nice.]

Don't tell her that, it'll go to her head.

So, everyone is under a curse?

[That is an incredibly detailed fantasy.]

[Lucy is taking notice of that....does he like Alex? If he's cursed, does he need to kiss her and then the spell will be broken?]

I don't think it will. She's pretty good at staying grounded. She... ,small>[There's a pause as she wonders if she should tell him this.]you tell her she's nice, she'll smile a lot.

[Lucy pauses then and thinks a few things over.]

Not everyone. So what happened was, my step-grandmother Lady Tremaine cast a curse and took everyone to a land without magic. So, some of us are cursed, and some people are just...people. It's hard to tell who is really who, but I know my mom is Cinderella...and I know my Dad, Henry, is my Dad.

He even wrote this book called 'Once Upon a Time' that has some of our stories in it, but in reality, it's his life that he wrote, but he doesn't remember because of the curse.

Does that make sense?

[Sorry Lucy, they've already tested that theory, repeatedly. He hasn't turned into a prince yet.]

Alex and I have our own language that works out well between us. If I ever say anything nice, don't tell her.

Because I remember a little bit of our lives before. Reading Henry's stories help sometimes...but I know because there's a feeling I get around both of them. I know they're my parents.

[There has been a lot of kissing under a lot of conditions. He's fairly certain he's not a prince. Pretty much the opposite of that, actually.]

A lot of things Alex and I do don't make sense to others.

So, reading a storybook helps you remember being in another world and they are your parents because of a gut feeling? What do Victor and Jim say about this?

Reading the book helped me realize we are part of the curse. And I was trying to convince Henry to believe in it, and set him up with my mom...but things happened...

And Victor and Jim know. I don't hide it, and I even have pictures of Henry and me! Victor knew him from when he was about my age.

I don't have any reason to want them to understand. As long as Alex understands that's all I need.

Before the curse, but I have a few pictures of my mom after the curse....it helps with missing them.

I think it's pretty straightforward. I only care about Alex understanding me, and she does so in a way that no one else can.

Not really, if you only have one person who understands you, and that person isn’t always around...it makes for a lonely life.

I've never been worried about being alone.

Because he’s had a lot of names over the years, mostly known as The Dark One because he used dark magic.

It's a very complicated and long story that children shouldn't have to hear.

[Even if he were inclined to share his life story, he wouldn't want a child to have to deal with such things. He'd already had to put Charlie through it.]

You’d be surprise how much a kid can handle, but if you ever want to talk, I can listen.

[ She shakes her head. ]

No, not a demon. Completely different. But, there’s only one person you’re willing to let in, and don’t care what others think of you. Your motives are your own, but they make sense to one another who supports you.

[He knows. He thinks about telling Lucy about Charlie. Not what happened after Coralee's disappearance, but about the fact of Charlie. The fact that he knows that children and teenagers can handle much more than people think. The fact that he and Cheryl had dealt with those figures when they were younger than her.

In the end, he doesn't. It's all far too personal and more than this poor child should have to know or hear. Even the mention of his daughter would just bring up more questions and more prying into his life. And Lucy doesn't need more strange on top of her delusion about curses and magical worlds and books. It would only serve to further her beliefs in such things.]

My motives don't always make sense to her. Does this, dark one, act similarly?

[Lucy patiently for Richard to say something. He's probably thinking about something very seriously...she doesn't want to push, so she'll wait.]

I think he did. I mean, I know of him from the storybook, and I haven't figured out who he is while he's cursed. But he had his own motives.

Were they good or bad? I can assure you that mine are entirely selfish.

Don't know...it's hard to say. In the book, his motives were good, bad, and selfish.

But I know, Belle saw the good in him. Saw there was goodness that was there, even when Rumple didn't believe in it himself.

Some people see things that aren't really there.
