Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

prompt i: the disappeared ones

Something strange has been happening in the city over the past few weeks, and it's starting to get kind of serious - people are disappearing. It started with a little girl whose parents are still convinced and terrified that she wandered off into the jungle to the north of the city, and things have only gone on from there. So far, a total of 10 children ranging in ages from five to their teens have gone missing, most last seen near one of the exits at the city walls or near where the river flows through the fences of the Inhabited City.

Today, it's reached the point where it's becoming a bit of an emergency. With so many sightings near the exits to the city, the government and Perimeter Guard have set up a joint search project, and are requesting volunteers to help scour the jungles in search of the missing kids. Any volunteers or members of the Perimeter Guard are offered a handout with images of the kids and will be forming a grid to search the entirety of the jungle. Which won't be easy, because it's not just a jungle out there - it's dangerous!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, as residents who've been around for a while might remember from last year, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: hot springs episode

It's been all over the news lately, the restoration of the old abandoned Amusement Park that was successfully cleared out and repowered, and is gearing up for a grand opening. However, thanks to a team led by Aecinos Ixocia and the technical expertise of Aoba Seragaki, there's another entertainment feature that was powered up and cleaned up at the same time, and is ready to open over the weekend - the Hot Springs!

Flyers and other advertising has been put up all around the city to alert city residents to the fact that the springs are opening, and expounding the various amenities and activities that the springs have to offer. Among the touted features are mineral hot spring pools of various temperatures ranging from cool to near-boiling, said to have healing qualities that moisturize and soothe the skin, as well as whisking away stress. There are a lot of testimonials to the fact that the springs have had an impact on chronic pain, headaches, and even temporary, acute illnesses.

If soaking in a hot tub isn't your thing, there are also lap pools, a wave pool, and even a few waterslides that are cleaned up and running smoothly - there's an easy and medium one for the less adventurous, but the other two slides are pretty harrowing! There's also a lazy river with inner tubes intended for couples or groups of friends to laze on and enjoy the warm spring weather. For those with something a little more frisky in mind, there are special tubes intended for romantic pairs or groups that go through a Tunnel of Love that lasts for 10 minutes and affords a pretty decent amount of rose-tinted privacy for lovers to enjoy.

prompt iv: the mud run

Ever heard of Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race, or Ninja Warrior? Well, something similar is brewing in Riverview. With the weather warming up, several companies in the city have contributed to the construction of a difficult obstacle course with three different levels of difficulty to make it challenging for people of all fitness levels. Featuring just about any obstacle you can think of, it tests participants' running, jumping, climbing, and other athletic prowess. It also tests participants' teamwork skills, since several of the obstacles can't be overcome without a little help from a friend or stranger.

But what about people with super powers? Isn't that an unfair advantage? Yep! It sure is! Any participants in the Mud Run are required to use a power dampener of some sort if they're super powered, so everyone is on the same level. Have fun with that!

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

[Uhura isn't usually the one to go traipsing around worlds, but that doesn't mean she can't fight if the situation calls for it. And with these creatures attacking civilians, the situation calls for it. There is a Spock-sounding voice in her head warning her about the Prime Directive, and she internally apologizes for breaking it while shooting any of the creatures that come close to people in danger. She has her phaser set to stun, and hopefully the fall doesn’t do the creatures more damage]

So where you're from, it's very important to know ages?

It's not important, but it's become a kind of joke.

That I can see. People make jokes about age all the time.

Maybe that's why they put that one at the top? I guess it would be nice to know how much experience people have, but somehow it feels less serious than that.

Like starting off with a joke will put you more at ease. I can see that.

Maybe I just read it wrong. It felt like a dating profile.

Yeah, it did to me too. But I was told it was good for networking, so I'm trying to be more flexible.

That's a good way to be, especially when you're in an unfamiliar environment.

I hope so. Is this new to you or are you used to being on strange moons? How far out do you usually travel?

I'm not as used to it as other members of the crew. I usually stay on the bridge to keep communication lines open.

We travel as far as we can go. There's no set destination.

[winscenario]

[ Jim nearly does a double-take when he sees her face, at first. The situation doesn't lend itself well to happy reunions, however, so he puts his shock and joy in the back-burner and rushes in the opposite direction that people are running away from, and towards the woman shooting at the creatures instead. ]

Uhura! [ Loud enough to get her attention, he lifts his own phaser, takes aim at the creatures, then shoots. ] More! You gotta shoot them more!!

[It makes perfect sense to her that the captain would be right in the middle of things. She takes aim at a different flock and fires off a few rapid shots to each one. They're taking a lot more than she expects but she does bring them down eventually.

She gestures to the civilians]

Quickly, this way! We'll cover you.

[They are more than happy to obey her, and she goes back to picking more birds out of the sky. Don't worry, Jim, she'll come back to you once the skies are clear]

[winscenario]

[ The situation does have a way of stealing their attention from each other. Jim hasn't even properly processed the fact that Uhura's here, but he's not going to get the chance to until the danger is gone.

It takes about three shots for the stun setting to actually have an effect, but little by little they knock more and more birds down, and they fall across the floor. With the civilians out of the way, though, Jim and Uhura have become their main target, which means they have a horde of birds practically raining down on them in no time. ]

[Just another day for the Enterprise crew. She's a good shot, but the creatures take a few hits and while she's trying to spread them out, it's not quite enough to keep track of all of them. A few get close enough to scratch or stab her with their various appendages.

She ducks to a more secure position. She glances over to check on Jim and fires at a few of the creatures that are trying to get close to him]

Captain, everyone's out safely. Maybe we should think about an exit strategy?

[winscenario]

[ They get a few close calls, which is to be expected when it's just the two of them, and the creatures just keep on coming. He tries to follow Uhura to a more secure spot, ducking out of the way of one of the animals descending on him. Luckily Uhura gets it just before it actually reaches him. ]

Read my mind, [ He turns, shoots a few more times at the birds closest to them. The rest seem to be a good distance away, so that should give them a few good seconds, at least. ] Come on.

[ He doesn't have a specific place in mind, but he knows the Quarantine pretty well. Something will come to mind. Until then, staying still probably isn't the best idea. ]

[spacelistener]

[She doesn't miss how he knows his way around so easily. She'll file that away for later, when they aren't being attacked. She waits for him to move before following, providing cover until he leads them to a safe location]

I can't say I'm disappointed I'm usually left on the bridge when you and Spock go on world for missions.

[She's a little out of breath. Maybe she does need to get out more]

[winscenario]

[ It's not much of a hideout, but going down one of the emptier and darker streets, Jim spots the open door to a building and rushes inside. He slams the door behind them, then promptly leaps up the first flight of stairs. Only when they reach the first floor does he stop, quiet at first, listening for any of the birds trying to come in.

They seem to have lost interest, though. Jim lets out a relieved sigh, panting slightly himself. He manages a soft laugh at her comment. ]

Sounds like you could use some cardio workout. Just saying. [ Feeling his heart rate calm down gradually, Jim finally steps closer to Uhura. He does realize it likely won't make much sense to her, but screw it. He's missed her. So he wraps his arms around her in a hug. ] God, it's so good to see you.

[spacelistener]

Very funny.

[She's a little surprised by the hug. She sort of gives him an awkward pat on the back in response]

We just saw each other, Captain, not ten minutes ago.

[winscenario]

[ He pulls back soon after, for what it's worth, hands lingering on her arms before he lets them drop to his sides. ]

Right. You did.

[ He smiles a bit awkwardly. It's a little difficult to explain, but he knows that the people on his crew would understand the science behind it a lot better than most everyone else. ]

Time works differently. I've been here for over a year, now. [ He pauses to let that sink in. ] We're in another universe, from what I've gathered so far. Either that, or a very distant galaxy in our own.

[spacelistener]

[She watches him. They served together long enough that she picks up on what's happening before he gives an explanation. And once she does, she gives a little nod. They understand time anomalies and alternate universes pretty well, with all they've been through and seen]

I'm guessing the rest of the crew is still back in our own time and universe.

[She's just assuming based on his reaction, but also fishing in hopes that she's wrong]

[winscenario]

[ Jim's expression falls a little when she mentions the rest of their crew. He gives her a little nod, though he adds. ]

Bones was here for a while. We arrived together, and he was around for about nine months. The portal does that sometimes— just takes people back without warning. I don't think the natives really understand why it does that, since people are supposed to go back knowingly and willingly.

[She nods at his explanation. Gently, she squeezes his shoulder]

We're all okay, you know. When I left, we were going back out into space.
