prompt i: the disappeared ones

Something strange has been happening in the city over the past few weeks, and it's starting to get kind of serious - people are disappearing. It started with a little girl whose parents are still convinced and terrified that she wandered off into the jungle to the north of the city, and things have only gone on from there. So far, a total of 10 children ranging in ages from five to their teens have gone missing, most last seen near one of the exits at the city walls or near where the river flows through the fences of the Inhabited City.

Today, it's reached the point where it's becoming a bit of an emergency. With so many sightings near the exits to the city, the government and Perimeter Guard have set up a joint search project, and are requesting volunteers to help scour the jungles in search of the missing kids. Any volunteers or members of the Perimeter Guard are offered a handout with images of the kids and will be forming a grid to search the entirety of the jungle. Which won't be easy, because it's not just a jungle out there - it's dangerous!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, as residents who've been around for a while might remember from last year, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: hot springs episode

It's been all over the news lately, the restoration of the old abandoned Amusement Park that was successfully cleared out and repowered, and is gearing up for a grand opening. However, thanks to a team led by Aecinos Ixocia and the technical expertise of Aoba Seragaki, there's another entertainment feature that was powered up and cleaned up at the same time, and is ready to open over the weekend - the Hot Springs!

Flyers and other advertising has been put up all around the city to alert city residents to the fact that the springs are opening, and expounding the various amenities and activities that the springs have to offer. Among the touted features are mineral hot spring pools of various temperatures ranging from cool to near-boiling, said to have healing qualities that moisturize and soothe the skin, as well as whisking away stress. There are a lot of testimonials to the fact that the springs have had an impact on chronic pain, headaches, and even temporary, acute illnesses.

If soaking in a hot tub isn't your thing, there are also lap pools, a wave pool, and even a few waterslides that are cleaned up and running smoothly - there's an easy and medium one for the less adventurous, but the other two slides are pretty harrowing! There's also a lazy river with inner tubes intended for couples or groups of friends to laze on and enjoy the warm spring weather. For those with something a little more frisky in mind, there are special tubes intended for romantic pairs or groups that go through a Tunnel of Love that lasts for 10 minutes and affords a pretty decent amount of rose-tinted privacy for lovers to enjoy.

prompt iv: the mud run

Ever heard of Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race, or Ninja Warrior? Well, something similar is brewing in Riverview. With the weather warming up, several companies in the city have contributed to the construction of a difficult obstacle course with three different levels of difficulty to make it challenging for people of all fitness levels. Featuring just about any obstacle you can think of, it tests participants' running, jumping, climbing, and other athletic prowess. It also tests participants' teamwork skills, since several of the obstacles can't be overcome without a little help from a friend or stranger.

But what about people with super powers? Isn't that an unfair advantage? Yep! It sure is! Any participants in the Mud Run are required to use a power dampener of some sort if they're super powered, so everyone is on the same level. Have fun with that!

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

prompt vi: wildcard

Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

Children and animals are a reasonable hard line to draw, I'd say. I suspect this blood magic you speak of refers to black magic, which... again, reasonable. One shouldn't judge, but necromancy is hardly titillating stuff.

Now, you can't say that and then NOT divulge any details. That's just cruel!
indigobird: (2)

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-01 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[It takes a minute to reply, mostly because Hawke finally discovered the backspace button.]

no blood magic where you are from? interesting. not sure about black magic, but if it falls in line with very naughty and a big no no then yes.

i am a cruel, cruel woman. also i really do not want to type that whole story out. my fingers are cramping as is

Mages back home draw power from the elements. Magic's already all around, getting blood involved just seems messy and nasty. Black magic generally refers to demon summoning, raising the dead... fun stuff like that liable to get you a good finger-wagging. Or death. Depends on who sees you doing it, really.

Fine. I'll just have to get the story out of you later, in person.
indigobird: (4)

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-01 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
suppose blood isn't necessary when you can draw on magic so easily. not the case in my home. we draw from the fade, using our mana. if your mana runs low, or need a lot for a powerful spell - like demon summoning - then you need either lyrium or blood. three guesses as to which is a little easier to come by. you get caught doing blood magic by the chantry, consider yourself dead if you're unable to escape.

over drinks, preferably.

[personal profile] luxurist 2018-06-01 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. But isn't that terribly restrictive? We ought to compare notes one of these days.

Religious fanatics are a problem for you, too? It didn't used to be so for us, but... these days the witch hunters of the Church of the Eternal Fire are cracking down on anyone with a whiff of magic to them. Even a suspicion is enough to condemn.

Of course over drinks. What are we, barbarians?
indigobird: (5)

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-01 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
we ought to. this definitely needs drinks and face to face conversation rather than tapping on these little things. plus demonstrations are always fun

...wow that name is way better than our local fanatics, what the fuck that's not fair. our lot keeps most mages locked up in circles - not the shape, but the name of the institution. if you're a mage and the chantry finds out, you get yanked from your family and sent to one to learn. if you're a mage outside the circle and resist, often you get killed.

only the classiest means for us and our debauchery

[personal profile] luxurist 2018-06-02 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ready whenever you are, new friend.

Wait a moment, locked up? Like prisoners? Unheard of! At least before the war came, everyone lost their bloody minds and plunged the world into madness, mages were highly regarded in our society. Kings employed our counsel, folk heeded our words. The thought of being locked up and governed like ill-behaved children is downright laughable.

[ She conveniently leaves out the part where the mages kind of attempted a coup to consolidate power for themselves, losing the trust of most of the rulers across the Continent and summarily exiling themselves. ]

I'm so glad you agree. It's always a pleasure to meet such like-minded individuals.

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-04 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
tell me a place and how to get there and I'll be there

a few back home managed such, if they were very well behaved and somehow exceptional, but it's... well, the exception rather than the rule. it's been going on for ages. "magic exists to serve man, and never to rule over him" and all that. things might be changing, but it's too early to tell.

isn't it though? makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside
luxurist: (10)

[personal profile] luxurist 2018-06-06 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe I've stumbled across a place that might suit our needs...

[ And here's where Keira would include directions to some tavern-like bar somewhere relatively easy to find?? ]

And here I thought mages had it bad where I'm from. Perhaps I need to revise my opinion, your circumstance sounds terrible. [ Tact wasn't always Keira's strong suit... ]

It'll get warmer and fuzzier still with some drinks in us, so do hurry. I'm sure you'll be able to spot me, I tend to stand out.

[ She does, since nobody else is wearing an outfit quite like hers, already nursing a glass of wine. ]
indigobird: (7)

switch to action or were you thinking of wrapping it up?

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-08 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[Directions received. Hawke's... pretty sure she can find it. She's always had a good knack for direction. Time to start moseying.]

i lucked out. Father was an apostate and managed to keep ahead of the templars. my sister and i never saw the inside of a circle. but yes, not really a great place to be a mage.

please tell me this place has decent drinks. this whole world i mean. not that i have a high standard but maker i'm going to be a sad lump if the alcohol isn't up to snuff.

that said, now i'm all very curious. and i suspect you're going to leave me on that cliffhanger to find out for myself when i arrive?
luxurist: (01)

nope, action is good!

[personal profile] luxurist 2018-06-11 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only sampled their wines, which are at least decent thus far. I should imagine the stronger stuff is adequate enough for its intended purpose, but you shall have to be the judge yourself.

Why, of course I am, that's more fun. Will the two magical strangers find each other? We shall find out. See you soon!

[ And that's all she wrote-- Hawke wasn't kidding, tapping on this device is kind of hard on the fingers for someone unused to such a method of communication. Still, this thing is handy. Much more so than xenovoxes or megascopes, Keira has to admit. Maybe a sojourn in this place wouldn't be so bad. She still has her magic at her disposal and nobody seems to be in a hurry to rally up rabid mobs with their pitchforks and torches for the pyres. Most importantly, she was rid of the ghastly swamps of Velen and that rickety cottage full of bedbugs. That was a blessing in and of itself.

Waiting for her companion, Keira occupies a table off to the side, close to the bar. Sitting with her back to the wall, she has a good view of the entrance of the tavern-like establishment, ideal for people-watching; specifically watching the people entering. Swirling the wine in her glass idly, she keeps an eye on the arriving patrons and the woman she's expecting to join her. When Hawke long at last gets there, Keira has no significant trouble telling; the woman's clothing alone sticks out in the fashions of Riverview. Much like Keira's own, she hasn't exactly prioritized acclimating her sartorial choices to that of her new home. Tipping her head, the blonde smiles to herself, curiously watching as Hawke makes her way further into the bar. ]

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Relm lets the text conversation go there as well. Her fingers feel a bit funny from doing it so much, and frankly she'd rather have an in person conversation. And she's got enough on her plate, navigating a new city and all.

Soon enough, she finds the tavern as described. She still can't quite get over how strange this whole place is. It all smells so... clean. And alien in a way she can't quite pin down. Even the tavern, rowdier and a bit less clean that outside, still feels too scrubbed down and polished. Where are the old bloodstains and stench of urine? Ah, this makes her miss Kirkwall, and the Hanged Man.

Oh, she definitely sticks out all right, considering the armor she's wearing (minus the hood, because that would just be silly). Hawke hasn't bothered to get new clothes, no, but given her recent arrival, that's sort of been at the bottom of her Major Concerns List. With Keira just as easy to spot, Hawke meanders over to her, though not before taking in more of the sights and sounds. It's only when she's taking a seat next to Keira she finally speaks and sounds a lot like Ciri for some reason]

And the mystery's solved! The strangers meet in a tavern that smells so much not like a tavern.
luxurist: (74)

[personal profile] luxurist 2018-06-17 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh. Well, that armor certainly is rather hard to miss. The woman bracing for battle? Well, if she goes around wearing that get-up, it's probably no wonder she attracts that sort of attention. ]

Oh, you mean not reeking of piss, vomit and general aroma of unwashed masses? However shall we manage? [ She laughs a little and lifts a hand in a carefree gesture, palm upward. ] Well-- I find I manage quite wonderfully, actually, but maybe that's just me.
indigobird: (15)

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[The trouble came to her long before she ever got that armor. In fact, the armor is a result of all the trouble and attention she seems to attract.]

I envy you your capability to adapt and manage. [Truth be told, Relm doesn't miss the smell all that much. It IS rather nice. But still, it doesn't feel quite right without it.] And here I realize I never actually caught your name, fellow purveyor of debauchery.
luxurist: (29)

[personal profile] luxurist 2018-06-20 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Truthfully, it may have more to do with an innate preference for cleanliness rather than adaptability in this case. But let us not split hairs.

[ Yeah, she's a bit old snob. Kirkwall would have her turning her nose up at it so fast and teleporting anywhere else. ] Oh, did you not? Then, allow me to rectify that. Keira Metz, at your service.

[ She lifts her wine glass a little to emphasize her words. ]
indigobird: (3)

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
A thing to be admired, quite honestly. But as a born and bred Fereldan, well, I'm pretty sure there's dirt and mud in my blood. [And the stench of dog.]

Well met and all. [Alas, she's bereft of a drink, so she simply tips her head instead. Luckily, as if sensing this with attuned barmaid senses, a waitress comes over to take her order. Normally Hawke sticks to ales and the like, but given her new circumstances, she's going to go for something a little stronger.] Whisky, for the love of the Maker.

[The waitress is off in a flash, leaving Relm to lean on her elbows on the table.] So, Keira. How long have you found yourself in this place?
luxurist: (02)

[personal profile] luxurist 2018-06-26 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ Keira makes a little noise from her throat at Relm's description of herself, caught between humorous disgust and amusement. ] You poor, poor soul.

[ Her contempt for dirt and mud and general outdoors cannot be overstated. Keira smiles in mild amusement at the other woman's emphatic order to the barmaid. ]

Oh, hardly long at all. A day or two, at most? But long enough to find this place infinitely preferable to my previous location. And have you noticed?

[ She motions with her free hand to the place at large-- all of Riverview, she means, but it's slightly ambiguous until she goes on. ] No angry mobs baying for fresh blood for the pyres, no sadistic mage hunter to be found? Why, I'll drink to that. [ And she does, happily, taking a drink from her wine. ]
indigobird: (1)

[personal profile] indigobird 2018-06-29 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, it could be worse. I could be Orlesian.

[Spoken like a true Fereldan. While there were certainly perks to being noble and living in a mansion, Relm still misses the days of just being a farm girl in the middle of nowhere, Ferelden. Simpler times and all.

At Keira's grand gesture and statement, Relm huffs out a laugh.]

It's almost disconcerting. No mobs, no templars... Yes, I think that's worth drinking to as well. [She'd follow suit if she had a drink.] I'm half-tempted to just cast a spell in the middle of the street. Nothing destructive, mind. Just for the novelty of knowing I won't have a horde of templars descending on me if I do.
