● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

prompt i: the disappeared ones

Something strange has been happening in the city over the past few weeks, and it's starting to get kind of serious - people are disappearing. It started with a little girl whose parents are still convinced and terrified that she wandered off into the jungle to the north of the city, and things have only gone on from there. So far, a total of 10 children ranging in ages from five to their teens have gone missing, most last seen near one of the exits at the city walls or near where the river flows through the fences of the Inhabited City.

Today, it's reached the point where it's becoming a bit of an emergency. With so many sightings near the exits to the city, the government and Perimeter Guard have set up a joint search project, and are requesting volunteers to help scour the jungles in search of the missing kids. Any volunteers or members of the Perimeter Guard are offered a handout with images of the kids and will be forming a grid to search the entirety of the jungle. Which won't be easy, because it's not just a jungle out there - it's dangerous!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, as residents who've been around for a while might remember from last year, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: hot springs episode

It's been all over the news lately, the restoration of the old abandoned Amusement Park that was successfully cleared out and repowered, and is gearing up for a grand opening. However, thanks to a team led by Aecinos Ixocia and the technical expertise of Aoba Seragaki, there's another entertainment feature that was powered up and cleaned up at the same time, and is ready to open over the weekend - the Hot Springs!

Flyers and other advertising has been put up all around the city to alert city residents to the fact that the springs are opening, and expounding the various amenities and activities that the springs have to offer. Among the touted features are mineral hot spring pools of various temperatures ranging from cool to near-boiling, said to have healing qualities that moisturize and soothe the skin, as well as whisking away stress. There are a lot of testimonials to the fact that the springs have had an impact on chronic pain, headaches, and even temporary, acute illnesses.

If soaking in a hot tub isn't your thing, there are also lap pools, a wave pool, and even a few waterslides that are cleaned up and running smoothly - there's an easy and medium one for the less adventurous, but the other two slides are pretty harrowing! There's also a lazy river with inner tubes intended for couples or groups of friends to laze on and enjoy the warm spring weather. For those with something a little more frisky in mind, there are special tubes intended for romantic pairs or groups that go through a Tunnel of Love that lasts for 10 minutes and affords a pretty decent amount of rose-tinted privacy for lovers to enjoy.

prompt iv: the mud run

Ever heard of Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race, or Ninja Warrior? Well, something similar is brewing in Riverview. With the weather warming up, several companies in the city have contributed to the construction of a difficult obstacle course with three different levels of difficulty to make it challenging for people of all fitness levels. Featuring just about any obstacle you can think of, it tests participants' running, jumping, climbing, and other athletic prowess. It also tests participants' teamwork skills, since several of the obstacles can't be overcome without a little help from a friend or stranger.

But what about people with super powers? Isn't that an unfair advantage? Yep! It sure is! Any participants in the Mud Run are required to use a power dampener of some sort if they're super powered, so everyone is on the same level. Have fun with that!

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

prompt vi: wildcard

Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

He is quite relieved at her decorum, though he’d never say as much, for to call attention to it would be even more impolite.

"A surgeon and anatomist," he answers. "I studied at the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh, and before I came here, I served as a surgeon on the HMS Erebus."

Well. Assistant surgeon, at least at first, and then events eventuated.

"Oh. Cool. Are you thinking of working at the hospital then? My friend Victor works there, and he's pretty amazing." So far she's avoiding his last name, but it's definitely Victor Frankenstein she's talking about.

"What kind of ship is the HMS Erebus?" It's not exactly jumping out on a limb here for Alex to assume that when she says 'ship' she's not talking about the space kind here. He doesn't have that kind of aura, especially when coupled with his facial hair.

"The hospital is surely where I would be of most use," he says with a smile. He doesn't quite make the connection to Victor Frankenstein, however—Goodsir is an educated man, but it's scientific and medical literature that is at front of mind for him, not novels.

"The Erebus is—" he can't quite bring himself to say was, "—an exploration vessel; that is to say, she was a Royal Navy bomb vessel converted to polar exploration. She sailed in company with the Terror to Antarctica, and then to the northern Arctic, which is when I joined her crew."

This part is easy to talk about, at least.

"You should definitely talk to Victor Frankenstein when you go in, then. He's probably got a lot of good ideas and tools to make you feel more at home with everything." Because she knows Victor would be good with using things from what may be their shared time, and what he knew from Storybrooke and being here as long as he has been.

"Wow." Alex says that a lot, but she actually looks really impressed when he says that they were in the Arctic. Unfortunately, her history there is more than a little rocky, so she doesn't have much to go on other than: "that must have been really intense. And difficult."

"The polar regions are extraordinary in their beauty, but no one will deny that it is a harsh, even punishing beauty," he says. He considers elaborating, but that goes places he isn’t sure he wants to go, and besides, he just realises that she said—

"Victor Frankenstein?" A frown. "He shares the name of the character?"

He’d read that novel years ago, as a student. Fiction didn’t take hold of him the way it did for other men and women he knew, but he had liked and respected it well enough.
11calls: but i can't decide if it's good or a shitty one. (empathy is my superpower)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-06-01 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh..." For a minute, Alex isn't quite what to say to that, and she just frowns before deciding to break the news to him as gently as she can. So her voice is soft and kind. "Yeah, he does share the name with the character, because he is the character. We have people from many different universes here, because of the door. Which means that things and people that may be fictional in our universes back home aren't here. So there's things like magic and angels and yes, Victor Frankenstein being an amazing doctor at the hospital."

A beat. "I know it's a lot to take in, but I do promise you will get used to it eventually. Everyone does. It can just take longer for some people than others." Her eyes meet his, and she gives him a reassuring smile. Because if her partner can accept this, then anyone can if they just let themselves. After all, fighting against reality isn't helpful or good for anyone.
bestsir: (disturbed)

[personal profile] bestsir 2018-06-01 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Goodsir absorbs this information in silence. From a certain point of view—namely, that it is impossible to the point of absurdity that he should be here, living and breathing, after what he did in Hickey's camp—the notion that in this place, Victor Frankenstein is a living man is not really all that outlandish. Not that it’s easy to accept, even considered thus, but it does at least get him past the reflexive cry of that's impossible.

"I...see," he says slowly. "I cannot pretend that it is anything but strange to me—but there is much I have had to accept as real in the last several days, and so what is one more strange thing?"

He smiles; it’s not, perhaps, the most convincing smile. But he’s trying.
11calls: (little smile)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-06-02 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Trust me, this place works it's magic on all of us. My parent, Richard, is the most irrational skeptic to ever skeptic, and he's still starting to believe. In all honesty, this place can actually be really nice, which is why I guess they bring so many people through the portal who are unhappy with their lives, because here gives them a second chance, even with everything else."

Of course, that didn't mean that Alex wasn't going home as soon as she was able to leave with Strand. They had a choice to make in the real world where they ended up saving it or well, running away so that Warren or whatever couldn't force him to open the door. Either way, staying wasn't really an option.

"But it does get easier, really. Eventually you'll just be like 'this guy is from the future and lives on a space ship. Cool.' Or 'Yeah, that guy just totally did magic, not a big deal at all."
bestsir: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] bestsir 2018-06-02 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Men's minds are remarkably resilient things," he says after a moment's consideration. "One may become accustomed to all manner of hardships or difficulty in time, and I suppose that is no different here." He laughs softly, shakes his head. "I must have faith that I too shall adapt in time."
11calls: (12)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-06-03 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Women's minds too," Alex added, the most gentle of gentle chidings with a smile, because it was more of a force of habit than anything else. "But you will definitely get used to it and then look back and think: 'wow, I got used to that surprisingly easily, actually.'" It's not that Alex definitely has personal experience here, it's just that she totally does with this sort of thing back home.
bestsir: (smile)

[personal profile] bestsir 2018-06-04 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
He has the grace to look abashed at the chiding, because of course she is right. He really must learn to adjust his old habits of speech.

"I look forward to that day," he says, a little ruefully. "On another subject—may I ask, what is your occupation here?"
11calls: (little smile)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-06-05 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"It'll come before you know it, and you can call me and be like 'Okay, Alex, you were definitely right.' It's good to hear sometimes." Alex's voice is light and teasing, and it's written in her expression, she doesn't expect any sort of thing from him in the slightest.

"I'm a journalist, both here and back home. At home I work for an independent company called Pacific Northwest Stories, but here I work for the Riverview News Service."
bestsir: (explorer)

[personal profile] bestsir 2018-06-06 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I shall do so as soon as it occurs to me," he says with a smile. "A journalist? You must be very well-informed, then, of the state of affairs in this place."
11calls: (7)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-06-07 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex nods with a little bit of a smile. "I mean I try to be. Sometimes when there's a big story I get bogged down in the details of it though. Last month was one of those months where I ended up being hyper focused on one thing: there was a virus someone created to remind people that an event was about loss. Thankfully no one died but I spent the month tracking her down and making sure she was arrested." If alex sounds a little proud of this fact it's because she definitely is. It was a lot of work, especially when one added that her partner and a lot of her friends ended up spending time out for the count.
bestsir: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] bestsir 2018-06-09 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"My congratulations on a job well-done," he says with a smile. "A virus—that is—" He has just read something about that in one of the books he has to read for his new studies at the university. "It is an animalcule, is it not? A microscopic life form that causes disease?"
11calls: When did I start working for you, exactly?! (Researching)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-06-09 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks. It wasn't just me, I did have some help but I'm glad that the person who did it is in custody now and can't hurt anyone else." Alex considers for a moment, because she's definitely not a science person at all. "Yeah, they're microscope things normally. This one was special because it was created by someone using a mix of magic and advanced technology that we don't even have back home."
bestsir: (oh dear)

[personal profile] bestsir 2018-06-13 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"People can create such things?" That is one of the most worrying things he has heard so far. "That seems—well, monstrous, or potentially so."
11calls: yeah I totally am reading (I'm not reading from this book.)

[personal profile] 11calls 2018-06-14 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, they can. Sometimes people can prevent things using that method too, but this woman was just really broken and wanted to punish people and make everyone who was here hurt like she hurt. It was pretty horrible and pointless in the end."
bestsir: (I'm sorry)

[personal profile] bestsir 2018-06-15 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are some," he says slowly after a moment, "who I believe can only feel alive when they hurt or subjugate others. That is too, too bad. I am glad for the sake of everyone here that you were successful."
