swipes: a friendr meme

Any new arrival to the city has seen the ad for a free app popping up on their devices, and anyone who's been around for a while probably has a profile and has used it a bit. It's almost universal in the city - Friendr, a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app. The default color scheme can be seen below, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

i have, actually! from people around here.
we haven't got the x-men or mutants in my universe
people with powers are called meta-humans
and we've got a couple groups of superheroes, but most of them aren't metas

i believe that. i've got a few long stories myself.

oh, no, there totally are!
don't get it twisted, most metas aren't really on either side
they're just living their lives peacefully not bothering anybody

i don't know the exact numbers but from the sound of it, there's a whole lot fewer metas in my world than mutants in yours
maybe 1500 total?
and they pretty much all live in one city so
if there's superheroing getting done anywhere else, it's non-metas doing it

I'd reckon anybody who knows to ask villain to use a warning label's got a few long stories.

Some kind of event cause these meta-humans? It sounds like it.
Mutants possess an extra gene, completely natural. It's most likely we're the next stage of evolution. That makes some of us think we're better than baselines, and a lot of baselines think we're out to get them.

there was an explosion at a particle accelerator. released a bunch of dark matter that altered about 1% of the city's DNA

that was a little over two years ago
and people in general didn't even realize metas were a thing until a year after it happened
i don't think any of us have got a clue if those changes are going to get passed down or not
maybe metas will have kids with powers, maybe not
only time can tell i guess

And if I know governments, they're probably thirsty to get their hands on those metas, see what about that explosion makes them tick.
