swipes: a friendr meme

Any new arrival to the city has seen the ad for a free app popping up on their devices, and anyone who's been around for a while probably has a profile and has used it a bit. It's almost universal in the city - Friendr, a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app. The default color scheme can be seen below, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

They’re each unique and have their own personalities—granted it’s sort of programmed in, but they all differ in size and shape. Depending upon what needs you have, there’s a different droid for that.

So their creators give them all personalities?

Yes, more or less. It depends upon what sort of code that's used. Some are more masculine or feminine than others.

The 'creators' are referred to as 'makers.'

Are there many of them?

Depending on where you are, there could be a few, or thousands. Or, if you're on a more posh planet, possibly hundreds of thousands, hard to really say.

I can't begin to picture it.

It's pretty common to find a droid around, unless you're in a more remote planet.

And droids come in different sizes, not all of them are tall or speak anything but binary.

In binary? Like . . . beeps?

Yes, and not too many people here understand it.

I'm not surprised. It's not easily intuitive and many people are used to seeing binary in writing.

That's right, but after a while you start to pick up on things. Each beep or pause has it's own tone and pitch to it.

It wouldn't be a problem for me but I'm impressed that other people have managed it.

It's a very common second language considering how many people use droids for things.

What do they use droids for?

Variety of things. Repair, translator, household....sometimes for war.

Can't the droids rebel?

[It takes a few minutes before Rey sends back a reply.]

No, they can't. You can capture a droid and reprogram it to be on your side of things, but they don't have entirely free will.

I see. It must be difficult for them.

[ That's depressing. Dorian, despite everything, has his own will. His own desire. ]

It can be, yes...

There is a droid here, you may be able to find him. BB-8. He's round, orange and white paint. His Master is Poe Dameron, and they take good care of each other. You could speak to either of them about the droids from our world.

You don't think they'll mind?

If you approach them in a friendly manner and say you're a robot, I don't think they would.

They're both friendly.

Does it matter that I'm a robot?
