[He clicks the button in the hilt of his sword to light it up, swinging at another creature and sending it scampering back into the safety of the water. If these things spend most of their time in the deep parts of the river, they probably aren't used to such bright light, or the kind of heat a dragon can put off. Toothless puts himself squarely between the humans and the beasts that haven't yet retreated, teeth bared in a snarl, and he lets loose a piercing roar. Clearly he wants these things to go away just as much, so he can reunite with one of his pack-dragons.
