riverview fourth wall memeIn honor of Riverview's ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY, players have voted for a fourth wall style event where players and non-players alike can indulge a few whims, try people out in Riverview's setting, or share small slices of their homeworlds with friends. This is a place where anyone can throw a character they'd like to play in the game, an AU version of a character they already play, a character who might not normally be appable, or a few threads with canonmates that they might not get otherwise.
Create your own scenario - the setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.
● Top-level posts can be made by either current players, potential players, or just people who want to dabble in the setting or engage in some threads with current players.
● Doubles of characters who are currently in the game cannot be posted to this meme. If a character is listed on the taken list and couldn't be apped under the canon AU provision, please do not play that character on this meme.

It's a well-known but not often talked about truth that sometimes people who have come to the Quarantine didn't exactly want to come. Whether it was a mistake, or the portal picked up on the faintest short-term feeling of displacement and jumped the gun by pulling someone into the Quarantine, some people just don't want to be here. And while the government and the scientists employed by it try their best to find ways to send people home as quickly as possible, it's not easy.
And for some residents, it's not enough.
On the morning of February 19th, some residents have decided to do something about it. A group of highly-intelligent, scientifically-minded people have banded together trying to find a way to make pinpointing specific other worlds easier, but a year's worth of research hasn't proven very successful. So instead, they've decided to bring a little bit of home to Riverview. How?
A virus was released into the general network - every device connected to Riverview's internet equivalent has been hit with it. It's not a very malevolent virus, though, geared toward all of the city's many, many holoemitters, cameras, and other types of sensors. Through various complicated algorithms and a direct line into the Perimeter Guard's open database of information on other worlds, all of Riverview has become holo-capable.
Throughout the city, almost anywhere that they go, characters may find themselves running into a little piece of home. Whether it's something as simple as the desk from their bedroom back home, the block they lived on, the bridge of their starship, the unfamiliar world they were pulled into before Riverview, or the meadow they like to watch the stars in, it might show up. And with those locations come people.
Characters may run into holographic versions of almost anyone they can think of. And, much like the locations, those people feel, smell, and sound perfectly real. They are fully interactive, and they come across exactly like the real thing. However, unlike the real thing...they're going to disappear. Whether it's within an hour or two, or if they stick around until the virus is shut down on the evening of February 23rd, they will eventually fade away.
(Unless your enabling game is strong enough and the character's appable, of course.)
Since the virus is affecting the whole network, there's one other thing that the holograms can use - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. Even a hologram can fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches (however one-night the stand will be). This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
During the upcoming festival of lust, also known as Sampremi, many of the highly-anticipated seasonal delicacies that are about to be baked, broiled, steamed, candied, and pickled are made from a type of fruit called the Lababerry, which only grows for a couple of months a year, in the warmer rainforest area to the north of the city. Businesses all over the city are gearing up for this year's festivities, ready to prepare the highly-anticipated treats everyone is craving, and while the usual harvest has already taken place, demand is high enough after last year that it's outpacing the harvest, and many, many businesses are offering very large rewards for harvests of the Lababerries.
And why are the rewards so large?
While the Lababerries are still in season, the usual harvest happens early in the spring, before the rains fall so heavily and the plants they grow on come out of hibernation. This is because the plants they grow on are highly carnivorous, willing to chew on whoever might be stopping by to pluck their sweet fruits. The plants are equipped with an acid that thickly coats the tops of the leaves, which are capable of clamping onto any intruder. The acid is fast-acting on non-biological materials, and slow-acting on skin and flesh. Once it contacts skin, it turns it into a sludge that the leaves suck up.
But hey, the rewards are very, very much worth the risks. If you want to start your time in the Quarantine with a pretty penny in your pocket, this is the job for you.
In preparation for Sampremi, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to encourage people to pair (or trio, or group) off in anticipation of the particular sexy set of festivities for the season. There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.
The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

(She doesn't live all that far from the beaches; the short walk gives her time to collect her thoughts. Deanna seems very friendly over text. Lucretia's sure that if she's one of Beverly's close friends she'll be nothing but.
Thankfully, though the sun is out today it's fairly chilly so the beach isn't very populated. Lucretia spots Deanna with ease, especially with her wearing the familiar uniform. She's seen Beverly wearing similar in old photographs: blue shirt with a black stripe, complete with metal insignia. Lucretia gives her a little wiggle of her fingers as she approaches. Her nerves have come back in full force despite everything, but outwardly there's nothing to suggest it. She's always been very careful to maintain a perceived level of calm.)

it always is nerve-wracking to meet a significant other's close friends, particularly when the friend is a counselor and known for reading people far too well.
which is why she does her best to appear and calm and easy-going as possible as she turns to see lucretia approaching. her smile is easy and warm as she moves to meet the other. ]

her eyebrows arch slightly, appreciatively, as lucretia mentions her homeworld. that answers one question and raises about a dozen others. the question about what betazed is like gives her an opening to mention something she doesn't normally have to. lucretia might know or she might not; deanna figures they may as well start on a generally open foot. she doesn't want to frighten the other away, but she wants to be honest. ]
Beautiful, [ deanna answers, her smile turning fond. ] Peaceful. Lush. Most of the continents have lakes dotted across them. The waterfalls I have seen so far remind me of the Janaran Falls on Betazed.

As for culture, despite being a species of telepaths, Betazoids have always been a somewhat peaceful culture. [ slight pause, and then: ] I'm only half-Betazoid. I don't have telepathy the way my mother does.

Well, like many half-Betazoids, [ which gives lucretia another glimpse into who and what deanna is, ] I'm an empath. I can sense emotions. I know it can make some people uncomfortable, but it isn't a secret at home and I didn't want it to be a secret with someone so important to Beverly.
[ she gives it a moment and then adds, ] Yes, I was born with them. They are part of why I became a counselor. I wanted to use them for the good of others.

Oh. (Lucretia's mind goes blank for a bit with surprise, and then she simply feels embarrassed, nervousness plucking at her insides. An empath. So, reasonably, she can read Lucretia's emotions right now, and has been able to since the start of this encounter. Great. It is kind of her to have at least let Lucretia know, even if she's now feeling like she's on the back foot.
She swallows.) Gotcha. (It doesn't change anything really, but she doesn't like the idea of somebody exploring her emotions at all.) It's... uh, admirable that you use that skill for therapy. What is it like living with a community full of empaths? I'm assuming one can't opt out of having their emotions read?

Betazoids have the ability to... dampen their telepathic abilities. With some concentration, I should be able to manage the same with my empathic abilities, if that would make the other person more comfortable, particularly in a situation like this. [ she pauses, tilting her head slightly, as though peering up at lucretia (and given her height, she might as well be), and then adds, ] I could do the same for you.
[ she leaves off the "if that would make you more comfortable around me," figuring that might be better implied. ]
I haven't honestly spent much time around other empaths. Most Betazoids I spend time around are full-Betazoid, not half. Telepathy is far more common.

I haven't visited Betazed recently, although the Enterprise receives almost yearly visits from my mother, so I suppose I can't be too homesick. [ almost as soon as she mentions "yearly visits," her tone turns almost dry. she loves her mother dearly, but lwaxana can be... difficult, to say the least. ] Although being here may be the longest time I've been grounded in a while. The Enterprise has become something of a home for most of her crew.

Sure. (That all seems to check out. Lucretia remembers asking Beverly of her favourite planet she had ever visited: she had named Betazed then, had talked about its greenery, and the waterfalls. A fond memory. Deanna's tonal shift draws her attention back to the topic at hand though, and Lucretia can't help but laugh at the expression on her face.

I know what you mean. I'm a traveller too; I just spent a century aboard my ship. We visited one planet in the multiverse every cycle, so I suppose my being here will start to feel very strange in a few more months.

(Lucretia can't help her grin; she can only imagine the unexpected chaos this might invariably cause. She's spent one hundred years on a ship with a set of identical twins, so she feels as if she understands family struggles.)
Interesting is, uh, one word for it. (She fishes something out of her jacket pocket and hands it over to Deanna for her to inspect: it's a round, metal pin, dark blue in colour with the letters IPRE emblazoned across it in white. She doesn't need to wear it here, or anything, but it's a... comfort thing, to carry it about with her.) I work– used to work for the Institute of Planar Research and Exploration. It's one of the reasons I found common ground so easily with Beverly.

We were to travel to a few different worlds and study it. It possesses the power to create anything given a tangible form, and stimulates advancement in all life; we decided to harness that power, try to bring it back home. I was the mission's chronicler.

This will be my seventh year, the same as most of the crew. [ and the entire senior staff... with the exception of beverly, who left them for a year and then returned. ] Before that, I was studying psychology and spent the five years between graduation and my assignment to the Enterprise on Betazed. My rank is lieutenant commander, if Beverly has told you about our ranking system.

It's still so surreal to me, to think of such a large ship. Mine was so much smaller by comparison. Beverly said you could have up to a thousand crew members?
