swipes: a friendr meme

Any new arrival to the city has seen the ad for a free app popping up on their devices, and anyone who's been around for a while probably has a profile and has used it a bit. It's almost universal in the city - Friendr, a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app. The default color scheme can be seen below, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

I am a wizard, and I've never blown up a building.

I suppose nice is a lot better than the alternative for an actual dragon.

I wouldn't expect you to do things like that. Les was always a special sort.

Riding the dragon's back? I've always wanted to try it.

It's not mine. He belongs to one of the other guys here. They're from a different world where dragons exist, apparently.

I'm kind of jealous.

Dragons, monsters, a world where the mention of magic doesn't get you locked away. This place isn't so bad.

You have a point. I'm a bit leery on the monsters, though.

Everyone is. But they're important to us.

How so?

Spirits help us define what we are. There are some that prey on people, but they also keep the Subtle Realm alive, and that gives us our will to find new potential. Without it, we wouldn't feel anything.

I've dealt with a spirit, and it killed a lot of people and permanently damaged others. I don't think I want that defining me.

What about friends? People that you've believed in for whatever reason in the past? Would you rather just forget they existed once they're gone as well?

You're saying in your world spirits affect memory?

[buildingcastles]

I'm saying in the world we're all in, belief exists because magic is there to believe in. Even if you don't recognize it when you see it. If we destroyed everything just to get rid of spirits, we'd be giving up on our own belief with them.

I think your idea of a spirit and mine are very different.

You're thinking of ghosts?

No, ghosts are different. And I'm not saying I'd get rid of magic or anything, but I've seen what it's done and I don't think there's anything that will stop it for long.

Then maybe they are just different. Maybe you're right and it won't be stopped. I can't say.
