[Avoidance is his middle name. Which means that when Al doesn't say what's on his mind he might just take the chance to ignore whatever his brother is asking. At least the words that had escaped so far did a considerable amount to narrow down where this line of questioning would be going. Of course.]

[Can't lie, can't claim he doesn't if he does. But Al's being vague enough and Ed has enough ideas of what he could mean that he's not going to risk answering. Because he's not going to guess at what Alphonse is actually asking and make this even worse than it already was. He doesn't want to ask, he doesn't want to know, but it was pointless to keep dragging this out, the same way they had a month ago.]

Why don't you just come out and say it?

[ huffing a sigh, all balls his hands into fists. ed can't lie right now so he obviously doesn't know what he's asking. so he has to come right out with it, even if he doesn't want to. ]

Have you ever loved me as more than a brother?

[The tension only grew as Al's fingers curled into fists, but with the question Ed visibly flinches. He's not looking at his brother, he can't- but there's the faintest flicker of relief in his eyes when it sinks in what Alphonse asked.]

Honestly, I never thought about it before we got here.

[He knows that's not the answer Al's looking for, not really. A short exhale, as if prepping himself for what was to come.]

I've known... For years. You're always going to matter more than anyone else, you'll always come first, no matter what. I've never questioned what that meant or- thought about if it was romantic before you asked.

[Admitting that wasn't so bad, they didn't need any sort of truth compulsion to have that conversation, but Ed rakes fingers through his hair, because that wasn't the hard part.]

That's why I tried, but- I don't think we feel the same way about this.
