MISTLEGLOW: a kissing meme

Some residents may remember that back in September, a love-drunk and confusion-spell-addled newlywed mage from Gramarye Magic Research let loose some pretty little fairy lights that trapped people in the city in little invisible bubbles until they kissed (and any kind of kiss would do). Well, the same slightly-less-newlywed but no less romantically-inclined mage happens to really, really enjoy the winter season, and thinks it's totally romantic. That particular sentiment is pretty common in the Quarantine - while Hygge is the celebration of familial love, the residents of the Quarantine all agree that that family often includes partners and lovers. Besides that, the folklore of mistletoe as being representative of love and friendship is something that the Quarantine has in common with the universes many residents inhabit.

So, as the last week and a half of December rolls around, residents around the Quarantine will see the result of the resident romantic trying to share a bit of Hygge love - small, glowing sprigs of mistletoe will be floating around the Quarantine, ready to trap people up and make them share a bit of affection.

how it works

● Two or more characters walking under one of these glowing, floating sprigs will get stuck for one hour, trapped inside an invisible enclosure with an approximate three foot radius. The only options are to either wait out the hour, or to kiss! Characters will know they're meant to kiss, because part of the magic spell is the sudden and intense knowledge that they should kiss in order to break free. There is no compulsion to kiss, just the knowledge that that's how to get free. This time, instead of any kind of kiss working, there will be different types of kisses that will work to release the trapped residents depending on the color of mistleglow:

RED: MOUTH ● ORANGE: NECK ● YELLOW: CHEEK
GREEN: FOREHEAD ● BLUE: HAND ● VIOLET: BUTTERFLY

Trapped residents will not know what kind of kiss will work for each color and may have to experiment before finding the right one.

● Post up a top-level for your character with the types of kisses you're interested in threading out, and then go forth and have your character kiss (or refuse to kiss) others!
● This meme is for characters already accepted into the game to play with the mistleglow prompt from this month's test drive meme. If your character is not yet accepted into the game, please use the TDM post!
● This meme is GAME CANON, so any threads played out in this meme can be carried through into the actual canon of the game.
● Much like the TDM, threads on this meme can count for Activity Points, but not the monthly Activity Check.

[ It's bad enough he's struck by these obnoxious lights a second time, but Karamatsu only just now seems to notice, is a bit thick in the head sometimes and is making this weird. Now add in the fact that he's slipping his arms around Karamatsu beneath the jacket just to stay warm to the mix and it's like... the fluster frosting on an awkward cake.

Aoba feels warmer and it's not just because he's stealing his friend's bodyheat. This is embarrassing, he just wants to run and hide from it all. ]

Of course it's just that... [ Aoba rumbles petulantly, clamming up. ] Wh-what other reason would there be...

_{[ They're hugging now? This is really intimate! But Karamatsu likes it. Actually, he feels the most comfortable around Aoba this way than anyone else. So, he takes it in, exhaling to relax as he returns the favor and wraps his arms around Aoba. ]}

M-maybe.. because you think I'm cute! Ah, or maybe.. maybe it is that soul mate thing.
_{[ The soul mate thing.. the big thing they don't really talk about but it certainly happened. ]}

Even if we weren't soul mates, I think you are cute enough to kiss!
_{[ SUCH BOLDNESS. ]}

[ Aoba is in his own personal hell, a nightmare where he's being subjected to this extreme humiliation via extreme PDA. He's trying to keep them both warm but why does it have to look this embarrassing? They probably look ridiculous, particularly under the orange colored mistletoe!

But...

Actually... it's quite a relief, this warmth. And it could be worse, he could be stuck with someone who would make this ~~weird~~ ~~even more weird~~ maximum weird. With a sigh, Aoba tries to add a warning note to his tone when he answers what he feels is a ridiculous reply. Karamatsu, please. ]

...Are you calling me cute like a girl?

[ Because he's a man, a man. And he's sensitive to this! Koujaku used to tease him, saying he looked cute like a girl... ]

_{[ Karamatsu repeats quietly. He remembers calling Aoba girly once awhile back and how hurtful that was. He needs to choose his words carefully! His response is quick right after that. ]}

Ah! No.. a different kind of a cuteness. Your face.. it isn't like a girl's face.. but when I look at you.. it makes me want to say, "aww, that is my friend!"

.. Is cute the right word for that?

[ Oh, that's not terrible. He'd in truth thought that this would become a throwback for that one time, when the two of them had felt crushed with disappointment and said and did some regrettable things, but in the end it seemed to have worked out.

Actually, had this been anyone else besides Noiz or Karamatsu, he probably would have braved the cold without going to such extremes, or at least made more of a fuss. ]

...I guess it's fine. If you put it that way.

[ Aoba had been boring a hole through some wall to the side, but he finally looks at Karamatsu now. ]

In that case... the same could be said for Kara-kun. N-not as a reason for kissing, though! I mean... boyfriends and girlfriends kiss... but those are on a totally different level.

_{[ Almost instantly when Aoba says that, Karamatsu pulls back slightly to look right at Aoba, his cheeks flushing. ]}

Oh! You think I am cute? I.. _{[ a pause.. ]} I do not think I have actually been called cute before!
_{[ enough gabbing, don't you wanna smooch him, Karamatsu? ]}

[ Aoba sputters. H-hang on just a second! ]

W-wait, don't get carried away! it's more like a scary-cute thing!! [ Struggling under the jacket, Aoba tries to jostle him out of whatever fantasy he's disappearing off to.} It's the same cute as some... sparkly alien!

[ Aoba, you can't even talk. ]

Just where do you think you're gonna kiss me? [ Wasn't Aoba the one who wanted him to get on with it? All this declaring that he wants to smooch him is giving him cold feet! ]

Honestly, Kara-kun... do I need to draw you a diagram? Idiot...

[ But with that embarrassed way he mumbles through his discontent is any clue, he's far more flustered than upset. Stop making this weird, he wants to say... but also he doesn't really think Karamatsu knows of any other way, so he gets a pass so long as he tolerates his grumbling. ]

Like... like this.

[ With some hesitation, Aoba lifts slightly on his toes and leans forward, planting his chilled lips against Karamatsu's forehead. He leaves it there for a good two seconds and then pulls away, looking redder than before but fully confident that this is all that is needed to drop the barrier.

Except... it does nothing. Nothing changes. They're still trapped. ]

...Eh?!

_{[ Karamatsu stands there, stunned and silent, honestly in awe that somebody so willingly kissed him. It's okay, Genji and Hana did the same thing, but he's still not quite over this even if its a third time. ]}

O..oh..

_{[ When the barrier doesn't break though, Karamatsu returns to reality with a flourish. ]}

Ah! See! It needs to be a kiss... of passion!

[ Aoba's head snaps back down to stammer at Karamatsu. NOW HANG ON A MINUTE ]

N-n-non, non, NON!

[ He got so worked up over that one that he started speaking like him. This is bad. But actually, Karamatsu's logic doesn't seem wrong. Aoba's kiss was more than just chaste, it was reluctant, nervous and just went through the motions. But can you really blame him? ]

J-just how do you come by that extreme conclusion?!

_{[ It's such a flustered response, Karamatsu cannot help but feel a little hurt at Aoba's reluctance. Maybe it's because he's just kind of average and really has no motive in his life. He's nothing spectacular like he wants the world to believe. He's a loser, to put it frankly, and Karamatsu is well aware of that. He hates it. He really wishes he was somebody or something that somebody could adore, but he's not.. no matter how hard he tries.

Of course, that is the first thought he has other than the fact that he's not Noiz, wasn't that the issue last time? He knows Noiz is special to him but he's not really 100% certain of the kind of relationship they have. Anyway, he does know it's something closer than what they have as "soul mates" or whatever that was supposed to mean.

His ace shifts to something pensive for a moment, lips curling downward into a frown but just for a second before he tries to perk up again: ]}

Because.. that is how I want to kiss you.. that is how I know.

[ There are times when he thinks he understands Karamatsu, but then there are times when he doesn't want to - times when his antics aren't just antics and belie something too revealing to say but nevertheless there, just beneath the surface. The little signs that pointed to some unspoken shift in his friend. It didn't really matter to him, or so he thought, that Karamatsu was opening himself up to things he may have thought as disgusting before.

Aoba shouldn't ask, but... it's difficult not to, when someone you care deeply about is right there. Struggling directly in your face. Not really one to conceal his emotions particularly effectively, Karamatsu seems to be trying to imply something. Aoba finds himself finally regarding what he thinks is an elephant in the room, even when it's phrased as one of those flimsy excuses. ]

A...ah. [ He tries to think quickly. It's harder than it should be, because his mind is putting together the odd and jagged pieces together and it's forming a picture he doesn't want to see. ]

...It's because it's like in the movies, right? Th-that kind of kiss.

[ And because even that sounds painfully false, Aoba's face starts to feel a little too warm despite how the cold crawls into his clothing, his core remaining tolerably warm only because of Karamatsu. There are some things that are best left unsaid, he thinks, but it's agonizingly difficult when it's staring you in the face. Aoba drops his forehead onto his, his hair falling over his eyes. He's not sure if he wants to see his, especially when he finally asks. ]

It's not like you like me in that way... right?

The movies?
_{[ Karamatsu asks just right when Aoba bumps his forehead against his. O-oh, he's making this extremely hard with him being in such a tempting distance away. He can practically already feel his tongue against his... you know, mentally.
At the question, it takes Karamatsu a long time to reply— his mind is elsewhere, shameful places that it shouldn't be in regards to his friend. For a moment, Aoba has actually rendered him speechless. ]}

U-uhh..
_{[ He tries to look at Aoba in the eyes, his own eyes crossing slightly. Think, Karamatsu, think! Don't be just quiet and awkward during a time like this. The first sentence comes to mind and he just kind of blurts it out: ]}

To me.. you are like the wind beneath my wings. ♡

[ That agonizingly over-the-top line should put Aoba at ease, he thinks. It should let him heave a happy sigh and pull his soulmate in for a friendly hug reserved previously only for those in his inner circle like Ren or Granny. He thinks that surely Karamatsu is just being his usual dramatic self and is about as serious as the glittery pants he enjoys wearing at the worst times.

He thinks that and yet there's little satisfaction. In it's place is a funny sort of discomfort. A distant annoyance, like he's disappointed but he can't place why. He opens his eyes and stares back, watching Karamatsu from far too close to see him properly, but he thinks that's fine at least. His mouth turns into a frown that he tries to mumble around. ]

Just what kind of sappy line is that, Kara-kun? I'm being serious, and instead you're just teasing me.

I, uh.. —
_{[ Oh no, he went and said something like that right at the worst time, didn't he? Karamatsu was being pretty serious, though, it's just the words that come out of his mouth-- ]}

—'m not..
_{[ He mutters, deciding that right now maybe he shouldn't say anything at all. Red continues to flood over his cheeks, heating the small space between them. Oh crap, he's frozen up. This isn't anything like he imagined it to be and now he just looks really dumb. He should move to kiss him Is it okay to kiss him?

His actions move quicker than his words and he yanks Aoba closer to him, pressing their lips firmly together in an attempt to hide his petrified and embarrassed state. ]}

[ Aoba just figured he was about to engage in another one of those awkward, bumbling talks of theirs, where they dance around the topic or fall ass backwards into some frustrated emotional outburst or what, but he wasn't expecting this. Karamatsu did some crazy things, but this was something unexpected. Aoba's about to lift his head to ask him if he knows that he feels the same way, just maybe not in those words -- when the meaning suddenly shifts into something else.

Aoba feels himself pulled forward and lurches into him. ]

Uwa--mm!!

[ Aoba's boots slide on the floor as he struggles ineffectively, already off-balance from trying to keep warm while huddled with him under the coat and so caught off guard by the press of lips against his own. Is he...?! He is! He kissed him, just like that, the sneaky brat! ]

K-Kara-kun! [ Aoba yanks his face back as he pushes a hand against Karamatsu's collarbone to separate them, so shocked that his objection is weak, like the wind was taken out of him -- little more than a hoarse whisper as he defensively presses the back of his hand against his mouth. His eyelids flutter in startled shock as he distractedly checks the barrier and finds it's stubbornly there. His mind reeling, he's not sure what to comment on first. The barrier, the kiss or Karamatsu's unspoken confession. ]

... [ He opts for the least accusatory one to start with. ]

It... it didn't work.

_{[ It's such a good, satisfying feeling that Karamatsu hasn't felt in a very long time. The last time he kissed someone directly on the lips it was on the Eluvio, and that certainly went places.. places that Karamatsu didn't want it to go. It was rejection. It was hurt. Somehow, Karamatsu believes that Aoba won't do this to him. Somehow he really believes that.
He pulls away, huffing out a hot breath. Just by something like that he's getting riled up and warm. It was so nice! He's been wanting to kiss him for so long now and now he has the chance to. He watches as Aoba fumbles around, red spreading to the very ends of his ears, but a crooked smile forming on his face. ]}

A-ah.. that must mean.. that we have to kiss again! Heh.. I'm okay with that...
_{[ A little more polite, now, Karamatsu simply slips his arms around Aoba's shoulders and turns his head to the side, lips puckering slightly as he awaits Aoba to kiss him this time.
How.. nice. ]}

[ Aoba's mental state seems to have taken a hit, he still feels like he's in a haze of shock. He's flustered and put off, but Karamatsu looks so happy that he's taken completely aback. As devastated as Aoba is in the aftermath, he twinges when Karamatsu drapes his arms around him. But Karamatsu seems to melt, like he just slipped into a hot bath, looking hot under the collar in a way that only heightens Aoba's awkwardness and embarrassment, because it's the kind of expression that looks...! Kinda! Wrong?! That's just too erotic a face to be making to your best friend, right?!

When Karamatsu angles his head and puckers up, though, that's when he finally comes to and bristles. He grips his sides with his hands and gives him a small shake, then reaches up to flick his forehead. Snap out of it! ]

You...! Wh-wh-what are you saying?! That's not happening!

_{[ He grows slightly impatient and slightly annoyed that Aoba isn't swooning in his arms and giving him what he wants, and it's the flick that brings him back down to Earth. Though, his expression instantly settles for annoyed. Reality sets in for a moment, and Karamatsu can't help but let his honest feeling seep though, pushing away his casanova persona for a second. ]}

Haaaa? I see..
_{[ Aoba is somebody handsome, somebody who seems to care about other people and on top of that has a really lovely voice. There's aspects about him that Karamatsu wishes he had.. but he usually finds aspects about everyone that he wishes he had. Surprisingly enough, he pulls away, breaking all contact from Aoba and leaning back against the invisible barrier, his arms crossing over his chest and eyes looking off towards anything but Aoba. ]}

I understand that I am not exactly your type— I'm not as handsome or talented as you, but maybe that is something you should say to me instead of making me think you could like me.
_{[ He's so used to rejection at this point it's almost eerie how well he takes it. ]}

[ When he separates, Aoba instantly feels the cold rush in all around him and he clutches at himself, rubbing his arms over his sleeves. His face still feels like it's burning up, but the rest of him is freezing. ]

Th-that's not it at all! Just where did you get that idea from, Karamatsu!

[ There's nothing wrong with him, he wants to say, but because he knows that's not 100% true he just... avoids it. There's plenty wrong with Karamatsu... and the same could be said of him too. But more importantly, that's not his point. As if to stress it, he takes a hand off warming his shoulders, his breath steaming the air as he points back at him. ]

Wouldn't it upset you if your boyfriend went around kissing other people? E-even if it was because of something weird like this, I'd be really hurt!

I don't know.. I've never had a boyfriend before.
_{[ Or a girlfriend.. for that matter. His flower fairy girl didn't count.. mostly. He remains where he's at, the furthest distance he can be from Aoba, and has the nerve to stick his nose in the air. ]}
