mistleglow: a kissing meme

Some residents may remember that back in September, a love-drunk and confusion-spell-addled newlywed mage from Gramarye Magic Research let loose some pretty little fairy lights that trapped people in the city in little invisible bubbles until they kissed (and any kind of kiss would do). Well, the same slightly-less-newlywed but no less romantically-inclined mage happens to really, really enjoy the winter season, and thinks it's totally romantic. That particular sentiment is pretty common in the Quarantine - while Hygge is the celebration of familial love, the residents of the Quarantine all agree that that family often includes partners and lovers. Besides that, the folklore of mistletoe as being representative of love and friendship is something that the Quarantine has in common with the universes many residents inhabit.

So, as the last week and a half of December rolls around, residents around the Quarantine will see the result of the resident romantic trying to share a bit of Hygge love - small, glowing sprigs of mistletoe will be floating around the Quarantine, ready to trap people up and make them share a bit of affection.

how it works

● Two or more characters walking under one of these glowing, floating sprigs will get stuck for one hour, trapped inside an invisible enclosure with an approximate three foot radius. The only options are to either wait out the hour, or to kiss! Characters will know they're meant to kiss, because part of the magic spell is the sudden and intense knowledge that they should kiss in order to break free. There is no compulsion to kiss, just the knowledge that that's how to get free. This time, instead of any kind of kiss working, there will be different types of kisses that will work to release the trapped residents depending on the color of mistleglow:

RED: MOUTH ● ORANGE: NECK ● YELLOW: CHEEK
GREEN: FOREHEAD ● BLUE: HAND ● VIOLET: BUTTERFLY

Trapped residents will not know what kind of kiss will work for each color and may have to experiment before finding the right one.

● Post up a top-level for your character with the types of kisses you're interested in threading out, and then go forth and have your character kiss (or refuse to kiss) others!
● This meme is for characters already accepted into the game to play with the mistleglow prompt from this month's test drive meme. If your character is not yet accepted into the game, please use the TDM post!
● This meme is GAME CANON, so any threads played out in this meme can be carried through into the actual canon of the game.
● Much like the TDM, threads on this meme can count for Activity Points, but not the monthly Activity Check.

[ On a lot of objective levels, this could be worse. He's met her before, she was pretty nice, really tough. Finn likes Sif well enough for sure. There's recognition here, enough to have him offering a brief (sheepish, given the circumstances) smile.

His general concept of personal space has been a little off from most people he meets. He more or less grew up without it, so he's never seen any particular problems standing just a step off from someone, leaning in, walking in sync. He's probably standing a tad closer than strictly necessary even now, the holdover of drilled-in instinct. ]

Sif, right? It's good to meet you again.

[ Apart from the whole trapped-into-it thing, the real problem he's started noticing with this magic plant outbreak is that a lot of people look very beautiful when they're like half a foot away, and he has no idea how to deal with that. He's starting to question the portal's criteria for entry. ]

And it... might've been better about a foot to the left. Sorry.

[ In spite of also being a warrior, Sif has a fairly large personal space bubble, and she doesn't take kindly to people invading it without her permission.

Still, the close quarters of this encounter isn't Finn's fault, so while she is very clearly not happy about any of this, he is spared from getting the forceful shove that might have been coming his way under other circumstances. ]

Yes. And you are Finn.

[ It's hard to forget the man who was bested by a cat. ]

You do not have to apologise, you are not responsible for the existence of these plants.

[ Unless he is, in which case things are about to get pretty painful for him. ]

[ Finn offers another very quick smile at having his name remembered. Sometimes it's the little things in life. ]

I've been trying to be careful to walk around them. But it's tough when they're everywhere. [ He throws the mistletoe an idle glare. ] And no one's signed off on letting me try to shoot them down yet.

I think that sounds like a fine idea.

[ She idly considers slashing at the plant with her sword, but quarters are close enough that there is a significant risk that Finn would get hurt.

Not worth it. ]

At least there is a fairly simple way to get free.

[ She's not super excited about it, but she also doesn't think it's the end of the world. ]

[ He knew there were good reasonable people stuck in this Quarantine with him. People who think just shooting the damn things is worth a try. She gets a partial shrug at that, a brief grimace that says exactly, I think it sounds like a fine idea, too. ]

Simple on paper. [ But still fairly simple. ] Gets a little complicated for some people.

Is it complicated for you?

[ Because if that is the case she isn't in so much of a hurry that she's going to be difficult about just waiting this out. ]

Not really. Kind of-- about having a means to an end out here, mostly.

[ He's sort of wound up across the spectrum of willingness as the day's gone on. Everyone's got their own hangups. And he's... definitely had a couple of his. But as things have gone on, simple practicality has just started to win out. Otherwise he'd have lost a good seven hours or more.

The more important thing is making sure it's a choice. Because however limited their choices are in these dumb invisible boxes, there are still options. ]

What about you?

[ Sif is in a similar situation. While she is far from enthused about the prospect of kissing... well, most people, in all honesty, she is also not particularly fond of wasting time. These plants are everywhere, and to wait every encounter out would make an entire day slip away without much at all getting done. ]

There are worse fates than giving a kind man a kiss.

[ And while she doesn't know him well at all, Finn definitely seems like a kind person to her. Kind and... excitable. ]

[ He's not great with compliments, but there is an undisguised wave of flattery that rolls across his expression. It's such a nice thing to say, what the heck. ]

Always good to hear I haven't hit worst on someone's list. [ Finn tries for a quick smile. ] Even though I'll be glad when this whole holiday winds down.

As will I.

[ It is more than a little tiresome to keep ending up like this. ]

So. Where should I kiss you?

[ Since apparently this whole thing comes with options. ]

This one is--

[ He squints up towards the mistletoe, taking a few seconds to try to sort out which ones he knows mean what. Not mouth or neck, so that's good. Never knew what purple was, he's glad to avoid it. Finn has no general issue to take with a who-kisses-whom solution. As long as it happens, he's fine. ]

Alright, yellow. Should be cheek.

Simple enough.

[ Which is why she leans in to press a kiss to his cheek. ]

[ He's willing to accept this kiss. And so is the mistletoe, judging by the way he stretches an arm out to the side without meeting any resistance.

Sometimes it's good to appreciate the simple successes in day-to-day living. Finn grins, broad and a little relieved. ]
