prompt i: winter rescue

Going into the last week of December, the city experiences an abrupt and unexpected dump of snow - several feet of it, in fact. Usually, it wouldn't be a big deal, since most people and most exploration teams could just hole up and ride out the storm and snowdrifts. And that's what most of the city is doing.

Unfortunately, this is the week that some of the Perimeter Guard Cadets have decided to go on their Winter Expedition - a sort of camping trip slash exploration expedition into the Abandoned City just outside the walls of the Inner City. While the goal wasn't to get too far away from the walls, with the snow starting up in force, the groups of Cadets have gotten turned around in the inclement weather and are stuck outside the walls, unable to return to the safety of the Inner City.

A general call has gone out to anyone willing to brave the snow and storm to rescue groups of Cadets between the ages of 12 and 17 who are trapped outside the walls in their camps.

prompt ii: a flock of stargulls

During the last half of December, residents might start noticing the appearance of cute, trilling little birds with soulful eyes (very mild spoilers for the most recent Star Wars movie in the link) throughout the Quarantine. Perched on tree branches or the corners of awnings and eaves, they will keep multiplying in number until December 20th, when a positive swarm of them will come through the portal.

Welcome to the Quarantine, Porgs!

These little lovable birds (spoiler-free image) will be settling in to roost just about anywhere you can think of. Outside your window, inside your kitchen on top of your fridge, under your bed, or anywhere else. Whether residents consider them a nuisance or a potential new pet, they're bound to cause a stir. The Porgs will be out and about in the city until the end of December, when most of them will find their way back through the portal to whichever world they came from, though a little colony of them will remain in the City from now on. Porgs will be added along with domestic foxes and Pokémon as creatures that can be found or caught in the city as pets without the use of AP!

[Thanks to Sere for submitting this prompt as a mini-plot!]

prompt iii: mistleglow

Some residents may remember that back in September, a love-drunk and confusion-spell-addled newlywed mage from Gramarye Magic Research let loose some pretty little fairy lights that trapped people in the city in little invisible bubbles until they kissed (and any kind of kiss would do). Well, the same slightly-less-newlywed but no less romantically-inclined mage happens to really, really enjoy the winter season, and thinks it's totally romantic. That particular sentiment is pretty common in the Quarantine - while Hygge is the celebration of familial love, the residents of the Quarantine all agree that that family often includes partners and lovers. Besides that, the folklore of mistletoe as being representative of love and friendship is something that the Quarantine has in common with the universes many residents inhabit.

So, as the last week and a half of December rolls around, residents around the Quarantine will see the result of the resident romantic trying to share a bit of Hygge love - small, glowing sprigs of mistletoe will be floating around the Quarantine, ready to trap people up and make them share a bit of affection. But how does it work?

Two or more characters walking under one of these glowing, floating sprigs will get stuck for one hour, trapped inside an invisible enclosure with an approximate three foot radius. The only options are to either wait out the hour, or to kiss! Characters will know they're meant to kiss, because part of the magic spell is the sudden and intense knowledge that they should kiss in order to break free. There is no compulsion to kiss, just the knowledge that that's how to get free. This time, instead of any kind of kiss working, there will be different types of kisses that will work to release the trapped residents depending on the color of mistleglow:

RED: MOUTH ● ORANGE: NECK ● YELLOW: CHEEK
GREEN: FOREHEAD ● BLUE: HAND ● VIOLET: BUTTERFLY

Trapped residents will not know what kind of kiss will work for each color and may have to experiment before finding the right one.

prompt iv: snowed in

Remember those Hygge Cabins that the City set up all along the banks of the river? Little cabins with enough space for a small kitchen, a table to eat at, and a lounge area in front of a fireplace, meant to be shared in celebration of familial love and found family during Hygge? Well, the sudden onslaught of snow that trapped the Cadets outside the city are also serving to isolate people who are in and around the cabins.

With the river nearby, the heightened humidity in the area of the beaches where the cabins are set up, the snowfall is even heavier than it is throughout the rest of the city. Anyone who's down by the water will find themselves quickly driven out of the open and into one of these cabins, whether it's inhabited or not! Whether these weather refugees are sharing a cabin by choice, after having a lovely dinner together, or unwillingly, in the form of an intruder on someone else's holiday or by being driven into the same cabin with a stranger, they're going to be snowed in for a while!

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

prompt vi: wildcard

Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

[Well, that sounds familiar.]

How does one go about getting tech like that here? And what's your name?

[personal profile] heroise 2017-12-28 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
( Boy are they both ever in for a shock! )

After talking to a few people: private companies, sounds like. Which would want credits I don't have.

( They may be stuck here for a while, unless they either pool their earnings, steal or find even more creative means of transport. )

Lieutenant Jaina Solo, New Republic Military. You?

[For a moment, Leia is just going to stare at her device. She can't not. She knows that Han was married before, and involved with other people, but the idea of other children has never crossed her mind. Hell, the one the two of them had had been more than a little bit of a surprise for both of them.

But then when you add in the bit about the girl being an officer in the military? Well, that didn't sound like something Han's kid would do.

It takes her a second to reply, but it's a curt one, composed of just three words:
]

General Leia Organa

[personal profile] heroise 2017-12-28 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
( There's no one thought that crosses her mind other than this one word for a long time: )

Mom?

( So many emotions well up in her heart, regret for some things she'd said to her back on Hapes, though she'd been right (probably) to assume that Leia wouldn't hold them against her. I failed and I'm sorry are there, but she doesn't utter either thing. Because if it kills her, she will make it right: and avenge Jacen and Anakin both.

The best parts of her are gone, along with her brothers. but like her father, she'll ignore it completely and deflect with: )

You're a General now? That's new. ( And pretty awesome, actually. )
oldladyleia: (9)

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-12-28 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
[Leia's snarky response to the actual words (and it would have been one, there was no doubt about it because she'd been a general for longer than she'd cared to admit, even if the title had been co-mingled and used interchangeably with 'Princess' far more than it was now) was lost with the wave of emotions that she felt flying through her through the force.

Where she is, it's all Leia can do to sink into a chair and just stare at the device as if it could give her some kind of answers. It doesn't, but the emotions that the girl (woman) is sending out are nearly devouring. Leia collects pieces of it, like 'avenging' and 'Anakin' which confuse the hell out of her. If Leia Organa were to have another child, she would never have named him for Vader. Luke may have forgiven him, but Leia didn't. In her mind her father was and would always be Bail Organa and the reason that they hadn't named Ben for him was because they didn't want to give him too big a legacy to live up to.

In the end, Leia just sends the question through the force and it's more than a little colored with confusion: Who are you?
]

[personal profile] heroise 2017-12-28 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
( The confusion she can feel is strange to her, and thus bewildering for her, in turn. The name Ben rings a bell, but not associated with a sibling; a cousin.

Jaina is silent, via text and in the Force for a long moment and then she responds simply with: Your daughter. )

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-12-31 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Leia had wanted a daughter to go along with her son but her timing had never been right and the twins that had run in her family had skipped her. But she had hoped that there might be a daughter to name for her mother, and to...

But instead she just focuses on a single thought, because it's the only one that Leia Organa can form at the moment: That's impossible.
]

[personal profile] heroise 2017-12-31 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
( There is a wry undercurrent to her confusion in the Force now, as a memory comes to mind:

"Don't cry, Anakin. Don't cry. I'll take care of you. I'm five, so I'll take care of you, because you're only three."
"Three and a half!"
"Three and a half."

—and the sadness swiftly followed be rage, and then nothing at all. She's failed her, failed the Jedi. All she can do now is her job; which includes avenging Jacen and Anakin both.

I can make a chart to show you exactly how it is possible, but somehow I don't think you'll need one. )
oldladyleia: (9)

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-12-31 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
[The memory makes Leia gasp, and her hand closes over the ring with the two blue stones on it, one symbolizing her husband and the other symbolizing her son. But she can feel that memory right in the very heart of her, and she closed her eyes at the sadness and the rage.

And at the need for vengeance. Leia had felt that in herself many times, and it makes sense that her daughter would take after herself in that way too.

She wishes Luke were here. Luke would know better, Luke would know what to say in this. But all she can do is softly think: I'm sorry.
]

[personal profile] heroise 2017-12-31 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
( Luke does know more than a lot where she comes from, but he's not here; and Jaina doesn't know much about the other Luke, only believes that at the heart of him, he's still the same man who sees the good when it's there in a person. The mother she's known has been similar in that she never gives up on those she loves. All Jaina's outward warmth had evaporated into the stars when the Vong came, but now; there's a strong current of fondness in the Force. She can't help it.

It goes right along with the anger, the grief, the sadness. It's my fault. Not yours. I need to get back. They won't have Jacen.

His body, she means. Somehow, her mother hadn't accepted that part.

I'm going to make it right. )
oldladyleia: (2)

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-12-31 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
[For a moment, she just closes her eyes and reaches out with the Force, trying to find the girl. As she does, Leia rises to her feet and heads in the woman who both is and isn't her daughter's direction, feeling a need to find her.]

[personal profile] heroise 2017-12-31 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
( She's spent her life on the move, rarely in the same place long since she'd been little. It'd been for survival, and then habit. This place has removed that choice to move, the ability to fly from her.

But even if it hadn't, she just might remain here for the sake of her mother all the same. Which is precisely what she does, and eventually rises to find her, and meet in the middle. )
oldladyleia: (2)

[personal profile] oldladyleia 2017-12-31 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
[When she sees the girl in the flesh, she can see so much of herself in her. So much of Han as well. It's easier to see almost than it is with Ben, but that's not what's important now. If Leia had any doubts (she didn't) to the truth of the girl's statements, it was washed away just by standing there and being in the girl's presence.

Wordlessly, she just opens her arms to the girl for a hug, because if there's someone who needs one, it's Jaina.
]

[personal profile] heroise 2017-12-31 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
( It hits her like a plasma blast, seeing her mother like this. She looks different, care-worn. Older, though that's not what hurts; it's the look on her face, the lines on her face that weren't borne of smiling or squinting at paperwork or at her dad when he was being a laserbrain.

Not even losing Anakin, nor the way Han had pulled away from her after Chewbacca's death had done that to the mother she remembers. And to that end, the shame, anger and despair she feels inside multiplies. This is not the life her mother deserves. Not by lightyears.

Standing straight, despite her diminutive height, Jaina wavers, and then approaches her with the gait of a soldier—

—only to clasp her arms tightly about her, as if trying to protect her from all the terrible things she's seen. Seen and done. And maybe, somewhere inside, the little girl who'd longed for the mother who'd had to put ruling the galaxy over being as involved as she'd like in the raising of her children just wants to be held. Jaina doesn't cry, but she does release a deep, shuddering breath.

It's a struggle. )
