prompt i: winter rescue

Going into the last week of December, the city experiences an abrupt and unexpected dump of snow - several feet of it, in fact. Usually, it wouldn't be a big deal, since most people and most exploration teams could just hole up and ride out the storm and snowdrifts. And that's what most of the city is doing.

Unfortunately, this is the week that some of the Perimeter Guard Cadets have decided to go on their Winter Expedition - a sort of camping trip slash exploration expedition into the Abandoned City just outside the walls of the Inner City. While the goal wasn't to get too far away from the walls, with the snow starting up in force, the groups of Cadets have gotten turned around in the inclement weather and are stuck outside the walls, unable to return to the safety of the Inner City.

A general call has gone out to anyone willing to brave the snow and storm to rescue groups of Cadets between the ages of 12 and 17 who are trapped outside the walls in their camps.

prompt ii: a flock of stargulls

During the last half of December, residents might start noticing the appearance of cute, trilling little birds with soulful eyes (very mild spoilers for the most recent Star Wars movie in the link) throughout the Quarantine. Perched on tree branches or the corners of awnings and eaves, they will keep multiplying in number until December 20th, when a positive swarm of them will come through the portal.

Welcome to the Quarantine, Porgs!

These little lovable birds (spoiler-free image) will be settling in to roost just about anywhere you can think of. Outside your window, inside your kitchen on top of your fridge, under your bed, or anywhere else. Whether residents consider them a nuisance or a potential new pet, they're bound to cause a stir. The Porgs will be out and about in the city until the end of December, when most of them will find their way back through the portal to whichever world they came from, though a little colony of them will remain in the City from now on. Porgs will be added along with domestic foxes and Pokémon as creatures that can be found or caught in the city as pets without the use of AP!

[Thanks to Sere for submitting this prompt as a mini-plot!]

prompt iii: mistleglow

Some residents may remember that back in September, a love-drunk and confusion-spell-addled newlywed mage from Gramarye Magic Research let loose some pretty little fairy lights that trapped people in the city in little invisible bubbles until they kissed (and any kind of kiss would do). Well, the same slightly-less-newlywed but no less romantically-inclined mage happens to really, really enjoy the winter season, and thinks it's totally romantic. That particular sentiment is pretty common in the Quarantine - while Hygge is the celebration of familial love, the residents of the Quarantine all agree that that family often includes partners and lovers. Besides that, the folklore of mistletoe as being representative of love and friendship is something that the Quarantine has in common with the universes many residents inhabit.

So, as the last week and a half of December rolls around, residents around the Quarantine will see the result of the resident romantic trying to share a bit of Hygge love - small, glowing sprigs of mistletoe will be floating around the Quarantine, ready to trap people up and make them share a bit of affection. But how does it work?

Two or more characters walking under one of these glowing, floating sprigs will get stuck for one hour, trapped inside an invisible enclosure with an approximate three foot radius. The only options are to either wait out the hour, or to kiss! Characters will know they're meant to kiss, because part of the magic spell is the sudden and intense knowledge that they should kiss in order to break free. There is no compulsion to kiss, just the knowledge that that's how to get free. This time, instead of any kind of kiss working, there will be different types of kisses that will work to release the trapped residents depending on the color of mistleglow:

RED: MOUTH ● ORANGE: NECK ● YELLOW: CHEEK
GREEN: FOREHEAD ● BLUE: HAND ● VIOLET: BUTTERFLY

Trapped residents will not know what kind of kiss will work for each color and may have to experiment before finding the right one.

prompt iv: snowed in

Remember those Hygge Cabins that the City set up all along the banks of the river? Little cabins with enough space for a small kitchen, a table to eat at, and a lounge area in front of a fireplace, meant to be shared in celebration of familial love and found family during Hygge? Well, the sudden onslaught of snow that trapped the Cadets outside the city are also serving to isolate people who are in and around the cabins.

With the river nearby, the heightened humidity in the area of the beaches where the cabins are set up, the snowfall is even heavier than it is throughout the rest of the city. Anyone who's down by the water will find themselves quickly driven out of the open and into one of these cabins, whether it's inhabited or not! Whether these weather refugees are sharing a cabin by choice, after having a lovely dinner together, or unwillingly, in the form of an intruder on someone else's holiday or by being driven into the same cabin with a stranger, they're going to be snowed in for a while!

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

prompt vi: wildcard

Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

[ Clary was going to think about it. Later. When she was not in a position to make a fool of herself and come off as the awkward girl who couldn't function in front of a man. For now she was trying to think like a Shadowhunter.

The guy was in trouble, and it really was an easy fix. At least when it was yellow mistleglow. Red or orange? Well, it might have been her that needed to do the fast-talking. A kiss on the cheek was easier to plant on someone without explanation.

And it also saved her a conversation with Jace. Not that she needed to have those conversations here. She was still wrapping her mind around that fact. Being from the same worlds but different times was 'fun'. Emphasis on the quotation marks. ]

I try to be, but I'm not sure that's always the case. I certainly hope it isn't when I'm supposed to be protecting people. I guess the rescuing is a past tense? It's still weird thinking about what life I had and what life I have while here.

[ It's certainly an adventure, he'll give it that much. He's still grappling with the fact that it's all real and not some sort of fever dream where the rules of subconscious somnambulism have changed.

The company helps. With looks like that, it may not be grounding, but he's not exactly looking for the seams in reality or trying to find a way to disprove it. One step at a time. ]

In my experience, protecting people is messy work. Sometimes "past tense" is the only option.

[ Because some of us, as the internal argument he has with no one in particular (who sounds an awful lot like someone very particular) goes, know how to roll with the punches. Of course, he's not showing his best on actually rolling with said punches, but there's no one here to point that out blatantly enough to fill in for the rest of that imagined bickering. So instead, he shrugs casually, hands moving to his pockets in the cold. ]

The two don't align too well, I take it?
outofthinair: (look how tough i am)

[personal profile] outofthinair 2017-12-21 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
How much do you actually want to know?

[ Clary gave a laugh as she tucked some of her red hair behind her ear. The winter clothes covered up her runes so it didn't look like she was covered in tattoos. Nothing gave her away in this place unless she ran into magic users, or vigilantes and then she couldn't help but talk about her life.

She shrugged a shoulder, and then frowned as she tried to find a way to describe it without completely describing it. Not everyone wanted a full life story up front, did they? And it meant talking about angels, demons, werewolves, vampires... That was always a harder sell than just showing up on this planet. ]

It was never future tense or even present tense until my birthday. Didn't even realise I was destined for a particular line of work. Always thought I'd be an artist.

[ She wriggled her fingers, miming holding a pencil. ] Which is why that's become the present tense in this place. Why not take advantage of a breather, right? It's just the people factor that's even harder to reconcile than not fighting for my life.

[ "Whatever you want to give," is thought, but remains unsaid. Though he has found, in historical experience, that the first best way to get people to open up is to listen. And thus he only offers a shrug as he lets her continue.

It's obvious through the exchange that she's holding something back--more so than the tendency to avoid small details (he does the same; it's a tactic easily recognized)--the only thing he isn't sure of is how important that "something" is. It could be the same small omissions one naturally leaves out around strangers, or it could be something much bigger.

And judging from his arrival and the "orientation" that he's certain he's going to be trying to wrap his head around for some time into the future, he's not sure the answer is a simple one.

So it's onto the second best step: taking a small, salient detail, those things people reveal about themselves in a simple, harmless context, and pushing on what's there instead. Interest goes a long way. ]

In my line of work, there's no such thing as a vacation. [ (Well, there is, but to him, anything can be if one only tries hard enough.) ] You learn to roll with it eventually. Even if the "people factor" never fails to make that harder.

But a savior and an artist, hm? Next, you'll be telling me you're a prodigy.

That's one more thing we have in common. [ Besides enjoying random kisses under mistleglow, obviously. She smirked a little at the thought. If the people factor wasn't so complicated, she did wonder if she would have been so willing to rescue him. But again, the colour of the mistleglow was the key factor. ] I definitely wasn't thinking vacation time was anything that was going to come along with what I was doing.

[ Still vague enough to not say specifically what she did. Just like he hadn't. Back home she had the luxury of everyone in her life knowing exactly what she did. Now she had to remember what it meant to keep a secret. Even if she wasn't so sure it would stay as such for long. Warmer weather would come soon enough, and the runes would be visible. ]

I guess I know I'm lucky there's people here from home. From my world. It's just hard with one in particular. [ Another shrug, since talking about Jace was not something a person needed in a first meeting. ] But that's all part of rolling with it. I've done it before, I should be able to do it again.

[ She laughed at his joke and gave a shake of her head. ] No, not a prodigy.

[ She just had angel blood which was even more pretentious. ]

[ "It's just hard with one in particular." He'd swear, if he didn't know better, she'd ripped the idea right out of his head. ] Sounds like we're more alike than you think.

[ Relationships. Friends or more than that, they always come with their own very particular set of complications (complications that can and often do mount and compound until it's less a complication and more a monolith...a wall). He knows the sound of those complications all too well, practically lives for it (at least when they aren't his own concern). The utter definition of bringing work home with him.

He chuckles as she does, and offers a small shrug. ]

Fine, not a prodigy. I'm sure. [ (He doesn't sound very convinced). ] How long have you been stuck out here?
outofthinair: (tank top stripes)

[personal profile] outofthinair 2018-01-03 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You also have someone that was a boyfriend that thinks he's your brother? [ Clary's eyebrows went up just a little as she gave him a wry smile. Honestly, kissing a stranger under glowing mistletoe was a lot easier to grasp than her entire position on relationships right now.

Other than she had made up her mind for better or worse to play along with the charade in the city. To move on whether Alec thought she should or not. Wasn't it just better for everyone that way? If Jace really wanted a sister, well... ]

That's better. No more using the 'p-word' around me, okay? [ Just wait until he sees her runes, then the questions will really start. ] Ah, a few weeks maybe? Got here in time for the holidays so it's all a bit of a blur. Long enough to get a job. Long enough to get in touch with the complication and the rest of my friends from home.

[ Her gaze flicked back to the mistleglow as her somewhat mischievous grin returned. ] Long enough to figure out which colour is safest.

God, I hope not. [ He scoffs quietly at that. It may explain some of his ex's more contrary habits, but-- ] Darling, that's a little too Greek for me, I think.

[ But he'll shrug it off and let her move right along. He knows he'd bloody well want to in the same circumstance. Which makes him internally shudder to earnestly consider, in all honestly. He'll shelve his own nightmare scenario there next to the urge to press Clary on hers, and there they'll stay. ]

Well, luck works in strange ways, doesn't it? For what it's worth, I'm glad it was someone with a good [ looking ] head on her shoulders.

It's really not like I chose it. Or wanted to choose it again. Fair warning if you do come across anyone you know - just check what moment they're from. Could change everything. [ Her face pretty much reflected her opinion, Clary giving an eyeroll before tucking some hair behind her ear. Honestly, she could use a distraction like Eames.

Pretty to look at, pretty to listen to. She was trying not to stare at him too much as she made a few mental notes that would make their way into her sketchbook later. ]

I'm sure you can return the favour sometime. [ Maybe the city had other foliage that required a kiss for freedom? Who knew, but she could dream. ]
