riverview: july test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!
● There are currently 5 Character Slots available.
● Applications open on August 1st and will remain open until such time as there are 30 or more character slots available at one time. Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis. Any applications in excess of available spots will be placed in a queue and processed as drops or activity sweeps happen.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon, and may continue while applicants are waiting on the queue (including spanning multiple TDMs).
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.
Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

So you thought that the impending summer and the great weather meant the end of the stormy spring season? Not so much. Just like the storm back in February, though, this one isn't exactly natural.
Early in the morning on July 20th, the portal switches to a different reality, and almost immediately, an ominous greenish mist starts to seep through. Though the Perimeter Guard tries to contain the spread, it's next to impossible to stop an intangible foggy mist, and as it rises, it contaminates the clouds. By the early afternoon, a storm is brewing. As the rain falls, it's the same musty, unnatural green as the mist, and it quickly becomes obvious that the rain burns any living creature like acid. Thankfully, it's very mild acid - a few minutes of exposure will only result in non-living biological matter disintegrating, like hair, fingernails, and the outer layer of horns. But stay out in it much longer than that, and any exposed skin will start to itch and peel and then burn and sting like a bad sunburn. Feel safe with your umbrella or raincoat? Good luck, because stay out in the rain for more than 15 minutes and it will start to erode even synthetic fabric and plastic, though it seems completely ineffective against metal, stone, glass, and plant matter like leaves and wood.
Unless you're really creative, the only safe places are indoors, under the eaves of buildings, inside vehicles with solid tops, and anywhere else with a solid roof - hope you're sharing the closest hidey-hole with someone you really like!
Unfortunately, while most of the electricity in the city runs through metal wires, a few key components of the power grid involve synthetics like plastic and other materials. About 25 minutes into the storm, right when these materials start to be eroded away by the acid rain, rolling power outages start to occur at random in the city. While the whole city isn't affected and the fences remain at full power, many places will suffer a complete drop in power. As the storm intensifies, the temperature starts dropping until it goes from a nice warm summer day to something distinctly chillier.
Here's hoping your characters can keep themselves warm and entertained until all the digital comforts of the modern world return - time to break out the candles, board games and cards, or swap some stories. And maybe swap some body heat.
Bonus: there is a ton of free ice cream being handed out before it melts? Not helpful?
Thankfully, with all the genius minds in the city, someone was quick to come up with a solution after a couple hours of examining an acid rain sample. It's pretty rushed, but as the storm clouds coalesce into a sickly green-and-charcoal swirl in the sky, an experimental machine is put together that will blast a compound into the sky that will nullify the acid storm. It only takes a short time to put several more units together, and then the Perimeter Guard is recruiting heavily through every channel available for teams to take the devices out into the woods so they can be aimed properly to shoot their payload into the clouds.
Teams can consist of anywhere from two to six people, one of which should be a driver, and the rest of which will be needed to help clear any fallen trees. These teams will be fitted with coveralls and helmets that will (hopefully) protect them from the rain while they're outside of the vehicle.
Two canisters full of the compound straight into the eye of the storm clouds are expected to clear up the ever-building thunderhead clouds and stop the rain, but more definitely won't hurt.
Isn't going out into the woods dangerous? Oh. Right. It definitely is. Each team of explorers trekking out into the forest is going to need some protection. A call is also going out to the general population requesting that anyone who is a strong, experienced fighter please accompany the teams out into the forest to protect them from monsters that are willing to risk the rain in search of a lightly acid-tenderized exploration team shaped meal.
The protection teams should expect most of the danger to come in the form of giant, ravenous monsters that look like either massive elk or boars, and seem completely immune to the rain - probably because their backs are protected by thick layers of grass, moss, tiny saplings, and thick slabs of bark. With their backs all coated in moss and grass, they're also well-camouflaged in the murky green fog and rain, so they seem to appear out of nowhere, bellowing and trying to either spear the teams with their horns and tusks, or eat them whole.
Armed with super stylish full-body suits that should (theoretically) protect them from the ravages of the acid rain, these fighters are exactly the muscle the exploration teams need.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.
Whether or not this month's mission solution is actually threaded out on the Test Drive Meme, the acid rain will let up in the late evening of the 20th. Blackouts will continue for a few days afterward, and there will need to be considerable time spent cleaning up the city in preparation for this month's celebration. Feel free to thread out any of that, or use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

He also feels kind of bad about anyone else who managed to fuck up and get themselves caught in the rain, so when Dany calls out, he heads her way more for her sake, than his.
But rather than duck under the awning with her, Taako moves his hand through the air above them, bringing a shimmering dome into place; the rain seems to stop, caught by the barrier as Taako lowers his umbrella. There's not quite enough room to shake it off properly, so he just points it towards the ground to let it drip dry, then offers his new friend a smile.]
Shitty weather we're having, huh?

However, she has not placed her trust in him yet. She remains flat against the brick, daring not to step closer lest his helpful act be a ruse. There are none here who should wish to harm me, she reminds herself, none who know who I am, but years of fearing assassination and betrayal have left her eternally alert. ]
What manner of magic is this? [ Her tone is not quite accusing, but she clearly expects an answer that will please her. She has heard tales of sorcerers committing terrible acts, and seen the dark side of magic firsthand. If the answer does not appease her, she plans to send him away from her, but she wonders if he would listen. She is no Queen here, and she has no dragons to enforce her commands. ] I think I should be within my right to know what shields me.

It's an evocation spell, not exactly my wheelhouse, but sometimes you gotta branch out. [The problem he finds with this is that all his explanations might mean nothing, to someone who isn't familiar with the magic system is he is. So he's just going to try to cover as many bases as possible.] It's uh, I can't do anything with it aside from this and like, making it dark in here, which would be pretty pointless. It'll hold for eight hours but let's hope we don't need it that long.
[He's burnt his teleportation spell for the day, but there are other ways to get around. This is just a temporary solution.]

This strange man, with longer ears than she has ever seen, sharp and pointed like that of an animal. His face and body, though, surely resemble that of a man, not a beast. Most curiously, his silvery-pale hair looks befitting of a Targaryen prince; were she not a Targaryen herself, she might have mistaken him for the blood of the dragon. ]
I see. [ Only very slightly, but she understands enough to know she isn't in danger. ] I thank you for your assistance, unusual though your methods may be. [ She cannot deny that his magic is strange and foreign to her. However, it and its wielder seem harmless, and Dany will not refuse someone credit where credit is due. ] As we will be sharing company, I think I should like to know what to call you.

I'm Taako, greatest wizard and chef in Fearun.
[Despite the brag, his tone is light enough to make it clear he's only joking. Although he is a pretty fucking great chef.]
no subject
How am I to believe you with no proof? [ There's a humorous lilt to her voice, even as she regards him dryly. ] I think I shall have to taste the truth for myself, great chef of Fearun.
[ As he gave her his name, she now owes him her own; she has no culinary titles to boast herself, but she finds she easily makes up for it in royal titles. Were she to give him her full title, he would no doubt stare blankly in response, so instead she simplifies it into, ] I am Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms. I fear I am no chef.

With the click of a button, his umbrella folds, dripping with the acid rain. He looks down at Dany, noting the mildly singed hair. Then, for a moment, he returns his attention to the umbrella, just in time for a hole to finally burn through the fabric. Bloody brilliant. Eggsy's face scrunches up in disappointment. ]
Oh, for fuck's sake. [ Gonna have to write a report about that. ]
[ After a few failed attempts at putting distance between himself and Dany, he ends up holding his umbrella awkwardly in one hand and successfully maneuvering his other arm above her head to push back his hair. ]
This your awning, then? [ teasing, because she sounded like — well, like she owned the place. A bit posh. Suddenly, he's very glad for his smart suit and tie. He bumps into her again, possibly on purpose. ] Cosy.

She ducks her head slightly, awkward in such close quarters with a man she's only just met. A man she's not yet sure is a gentleman, either. She only hopes she won't regret her kindness. ]
It was the only place of refuge when the storm came. [ The emerald storm, as she's taken to thinking of it. The raindrops shimmer like jewels in the right light. She'd find it awe-inspiring if it weren't so dangerous — but then again, danger is oft awe-inspiring in itself. ] Were it mine, I'd have seen to it that it was made more— accommodating. [ Bigger. ]

Unfortunately, he doesn't really have another brand to fall back on, so he clears his throat. Wonders what Harry Hart might do, if he were wedged under an awning with a proper lady. Might have apologized and politely introduced himself, offering his handkerchief to wipe away the storm.
Bit late for that. Her mention of their, ah, tight quarters sends him looking down at his oxfords, willing himself to be still even as he continues to fidget. Of course, his voice hasn't lost any of its confidence, easily babbling in the hopes of passing the time. ]
I'll start work on the expansion tomorrow. Add a guest bedroom. Maybe some decorations. A few paintings — portraits. [ is that fancier... than paintings... sounds more like an A-level vocab word, at least. lightly — ] Much better for an uptown gal.
[ this fantasy awning home is already out of hand, etc. ]

The corner of her mouth twitches up in dry amusement, and she crosses her arms, peering up at him. If they're to wait out the storm together, it follows that they should get to know each other, at least passingly. ]
I think I should like to learn the name of my new decorator.
no subject
'Course this is the part where he should say Gary or Galahad — or perhaps something clever. ]
Eggsy. [ or not... ] Eggsy Unwin. [ He cants his head. ] And my client?
[ Now that's better. ]

Burned him?! What the bloody hell? Was it raining holy water now? He started to bolt down the street, blanket trailing behind him like a ratty cape before he heard a voice call out to him. It made him notice that it wasn't just him burning. Not holy water, then. Acid? Sod this sodding planet and it's bleeding ridiculous weather and rules. He looked over at the awning, then back at the smoking streets before he grumbled to himself and ran to collide in with the wall beside her, shaking the blanket out and letting it rest on the ground, damp and smouldering as he shook the rest of the wet off his fingers.]
Bloody acid rain!
[The urge to put his fingers in his mouth was strong enough that they were halfway there before he caught himself, shaking them out and looking down at the blistered skin with a sigh. Now that he wasn't in imminent danger of melting, that gave him a moment to look over at his rain partner -- and pause. Well. That was... well. Wasn't this one a looker? The leer was on his face before he could really help himself, but he'd recalled the words she'd used to beckon him over. It reminded him of earlier days. Days when his heart had still beat and he'd been human. Mortal. Weak. A proper gentleman. He hated reminders of those days, leaning back against the wall and opting instead to pull out a pack of smokes and a lighter. Looking at her again, he looked down at his pack, remembering how some of the upper crust ladies had enjoyed their fancy long cigarettes with the longer holders to keep them from staining their fingers or lace gloves. Well, she had called him out of the rain...]
Want one?
i.
Thus, Dany doesn't have to invite him twice. He darts over to her, quick as a shot. He's lean and lithe and doesn't take up much space, but this is very close quarters.
He offers an apologetic smile. ]
So terribly sorry, my lady. Hopefully this wretched rain will allow us a bit of respite soon.
no subject
Your Grace, [ she corrects. She's not unkind, knowing he hadn't been aware of her status. Had he been, she would have found 'my lady' to be an insult rather than the sign of a gentleman. ] And what might I call you, Ser...? [ Surely, he's a knight of some sort where he comes from, if not a noble himself. He carries himself well, and his clothing is so fine. His appearance is common in his realm, she assumes, and not means for being cast out or shunned. ]
no subject
I'm no 'ser' anything, Your Grace. But you can call me Rin, if you like.
[ He is nobility, after the customs of his own people, but that's not something he likes to broadcast.
The rain continues, beating steadily against their meager roof, hissing as it eats away whatever it touches. ]
We cannot tarry here long.
no subject
In response to his concern, she shoots him a look of pure incredulity. Tarrying here seems a better choice than walking out into the acid rain unprotected. In Daenerys's eyes, tarrying here is the only choice. Even if they were to get out of the rain unharmed, their clothing and hair would be singed, if not altogether ruined. She doesn't savor the idea of her clothing disintegrating in front of a stranger, charming or not. ]
What would you have us do? [ she asks, leveling a look at him that almost resembles a challenge. Despite her reservations, she's curious to see if he's concocted some farfetched plan for their escape, or if he's only thinking out loud. ]
no subject
He gestures towards a building some distance away. Tall trees mark the path, serving as their only form of defense, but it's better than nothing. ]
If I'm quick about it, I can get you to that shop there. Get you inside.
[ He half-smiles, shrugging. ]
You'd have to trust me, though.
no subject
And what reason do I have to trust you? [ He is no knight, she now knows. Perhaps if he were, she would more easily put her faith in him. He's simply a regular man, and for all she knows, unfit to protect her in any way.
Still, the pitter-patter of the rain on the small roof above their heads causes her heartbeat to pick up, a prickling on the back of her neck telling her that what he says is true. They could remain here and hope the storm dies down before the acid begins to drip through the overhang, but it would be unwise. Making a run for it would be unwise, too, of course — but perhaps not quite as unwise.
Without giving him a chance to respond to her first question, she turns to him, eyes searching his face. ] Are you certain you can do it?
