No species can experience the growth and change necessary to progress without also experiencing discomfort. When that discomfort is physical in nature, it's called inhumane; when it's emotional or intellectual in nature, it's called immoral. But all that pausing to indulge in moral arguments will achieve at that point is stagnation and, ultimately, obsolescence of the species.
That's what I mean by luxury - something those in the current time can only afford at the cost of future existence.
