What does it matter if the smile is usually shallow and doesn't quite reach his eyes, and the handshake is on the unenthusiastic side?
Just now, everything here is so new to him that he needs all the information he can get, and as such, he can be found in various locations around town, interested in nearly everything. After all, it does seem really nice here... and it hasn't struck him yet, but when he smiles, it's bright and genuine.
In a bookshop, he asks another customer if the book he's looking at is any good, when he has no interest in it at all and is primarily interested in the person he's asking. At Community Housing, he buttonholes people on his floor in the kitchen and entertainment areas and asks them where they're from. In a cafe, he eats a slice of tiramisu and drinks coffee with such evident pleasure that a passerby may feel compelled to remark on it... or the strange way he's holding that book he bought that he wasn't interested in, or, indeed, the way he's perched at the table, with his feet on the seat and his knees drawn up to his chest.
