It's a huge thing to turn away a traveller. Asgard's winters were insanely harsh to the point of mirroring Jotunheim at one point, so it became a matter of life and death to help out those passing through. They had the right to invoke safe hearth and home for a night, at least, in order to save their soul.

It caught on with the mortals too, once they'd evolved enough. No offence.
