Breq | Imperial Radch Trilogy

i - the scale of the problem

[The river is overflowing its banks with water and monsters both, and still recovering from vacuum exposure or not, Breq isn't about to sit idly by in a medical bed and wait for whatever this place uses as correctives to finish their work. As soon as she could manage to dress and take more than a few steps, she'd made her way out here, to the barrier set up to guard the barrier and the eerie white tentacles occasionally writhing their way up from under the surface.

Even she knows better than to try and throw herself into the fray in her recently-recovered state, though. Instead, she's taken up a position behind the barrier, a nicely sheltered spot where she's been crouched for what seems like the past few hours, not so much as twitching as she keeps a watch on the overflowing river. Only the slightest twitch of her hand, curling into a fist, gives away that anything has changed.]

There, [she calls out to the nearest person, voice even.] Three more. Crocodiles, three meters long. Surfacing right next to the barrier.

[Of all the times Breq has ever wished for a good rifle, now is really at the top of the list.]

iii - casting out

[Breq should have seen this coming.

Or maybe that's unfair. One can't see the failure of their sight coming so easily, considering the sense in question. Maybe it's more accurate to say that Breq should have caught it before now, during her time spent as a sentry along the barriers along the river.

In truth, Breq had noticed the fuzzing at the edges of her vision, had blinked it away and attributed it to a lack of rest, had resolved to push past it, for only a little while longer. Just until the Perimeter Guard sent up a relief. Maybe the universe is punishing Breq's hubris, in trying to push past her injuries, or maybe she's just made a bad call and the pieces have fallen as they will fall. Whatever the reason, she's not managed to make her way far into the city proper--is in the middle of climbing a flight of stairs, in fact--when a wall of black descends before her eyes.]

No. [It comes out as a gasp, barely audible, as Breq goes stiff. She blinks, trying to force her eyes into working, then again when the utter darkness doesn't disappear. Pulse thudding through her veins, she gropes for the railing that was next to her only moments ago, if only she can find it--]
