At the foot of one of these machines, stood a man. Over two meters tall and kitted out in OD green armor that married the mythical with the mechanical in its impossible size. Dwarfed where he surveyed the mecha unit looking almost like its twin, scaled down in miniature.
The giant of man stood there, hands on his hip, in the company of one of Guard. Even with a face hidden by the orange, polarized visor of his helmet there was nothing in his posture that exactly screamed "impressed."
"If one of these breaks down, do I get out and push?"
After a silence ticked by from polite pause to uncomfortable, the Perimeter Guard cleared her throat. Rattling off something scripted about the risks of field testing before Chief could get in another dig.
While he hadn't said much, he made his suspicions about these machines clear. Nothing that big should be bipedal; impractical and an engineering nightmare. Enough that Chief had come to regret releasing the M121 Jackrabbit he had arrived with days earlier. Thinking objectively at the time that it would be useful to have another scout out there. Now he just wanted an excuse to get out in the field from somewhere other than in a lumbering disaster.
"Well ma'am," Chief said after a beat. "If this takes two, I'll need someone who doesn't mind giving up a little leg room."
