There's another sigh, and an eyeroll. Talking to Chase is about a million times harder than talking to anyone else, because he's so hellbent on not caring, on refusing to be a person with like...flaws, and small squishy parts, and it's upsetting because it's too easy to hate someone like that. Too easy to decide they're rotten and useless and that it doesn't matter what happens to them.

Way too easy.

Caleb, in this moment, has decided he's not going to let that happen. He essentially killed Chase to protect his loved ones, but his father gave the ultimate sacrifice for it and Caleb doesn't have to like it.

So he keeps his arms crossed, but raises one shoulder in a shrug. "Not thrilled that my father died just so I could remove you from the world, apparently, and send you to nowhere." Whatever that means. "The way he is, the way he looks? I can't...that's not on me, except to keep myself and everyone I know away from that same fate."
