riverview: october test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● There are currently 31 Character Slots available.
Applications are open but the application and reserve cycle will resume with apps closing on November 7th.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon, and may continue while applicants are waiting on the queue (including spanning multiple TDMs).
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: high voltage!

Over the course of the past couple months, something has been changing in the Abandoned City, the part of the Quarantine that was abandoned over a decade ago after the great Epidemic that decimated the population of the sprawling city. It hasn't been independent or spontaneous either - Quarantine resident Ava Orlova has been practicing with her energy production powers outside the city in a way that has had some interesting side effects.

With burst after burst of glowing blue energy surging through a spur of one of the abandoned and neglected transit train lines, something has started stirring. The line was connected to a long-dormant hydro-electric power relay station located near on the river just before it connects to the waterfalls (see the crudely-drawn map here), and with all that power being pumped through the train line and ending up in the station, the backup generators have wheezed to life.

What does this mean for Quarantine residents?

Providing the station can be secured and brought back to full power, it means that the overall electrical grid in the city will be much more reliable, the fences will be more secure, and new methods to try to direct the portal to send mistaken arrivals home can be explored. Most importantly, the part of the Abandoned City surrounding the newly-activated power station will be much easier to tame and inhabit. The possibility of expansion is very important for the Quarantine - with new arrivals coming through the portal almost constantly, overpopulation has been a bit of a concern of late.

With all of this at stake, the Perimeter Guard and the Government of Riverview are teaming up to make sure that this new area gets explored, secured, and made useful in as short a time as possible. Anyone with even an inkling of desire to explore will see ads, fliers, or Perimeter Guard Cadets talking up the exploration mission out to the new power relay station. Head over to the Perimeter Guard Headquarters to receive a free package of exploration equipment courtesy of the Government of Riverview (complete with comfortable camouflage jumpsuit, tactical belts, and a lightweight pack with a survival kit including food, water, first aid, flares, and other similar supplies) and be issued a weapon to follow the train line out to the power station and ensure the route is safe.

prompt ii: standing ground

It isn't just the route to the power station that needs to be cleared - with all the activity and the thrum of energy and light at the station, a swarm of interested monsters and creatures has come toward the area. The exploration team and any techs interested in helping to get the station fully operational will need protection, and the station itself will need to be cleared of all threats and secured so the engineers, electricians, and technical geniuses can safely work on establishing a power grid in the area.

Join in the fray, and back up your fellow explorers to get the area safe, secure, and able to be used!

Almost any type of monster is possible, including monsters featured in previous Test Drives, monsters that players make up on the fly, and even monsters from individual character canons that could have conceivably come through the portal. The fight, however, is totally worth it. Once this area is cleared out, there's going to be a lot more space to move around and a few interesting new locations...

prompt iii: ghosts of october

During the 10th month of every year on the moon, due to a complex series of chemical, electromagnetic, and magical forces that no one has ever exactly distinguished or completely understands, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead are weakened almost to the point of nonexistence. During this time, residents of the moon are able to see and interact with the dead - ghosts, manifesting in ways that run the gamut from being a strange sense of being watched or being visible or audible all the way to more corporeal spirits that can affect the world around them. The barriers are weaker in some parts of the city than they are in others, with some areas experiencing little to no ghost activity, while others are so populated with these ghosts that residents can barely go a few feet without running into one. The ghosts are generally the unsettled dead, people who died violently, or who were lost, seeking a place to call home, and their behavior is as varied as it was while they were alive. Some ghosts are angry and vengeful, some are simply lonely and lost.

While some people tend to interact with the ghosts only a little and as necessary, others avoid them as completely as possible, and yet others actively seek out souls who are suffering and try to ease that so they can stop coming back year after year. There are other people who have found that ghosts from their home worlds have come through with them, following them through the portal when they arrived, even if they did not die on the moon...

Whether facing death or making peace with those who have died, this is a time to reflect.

A Few OOC Guidelines:
● Characters may see or interact with ghosts from the Quarantine's past. These people will be as varied as the NPCs, from a multitude of different worlds, and characters are welcome to either engage or avoid, as players wish.
● Most Quarantine-based ghosts will have died in either the Great War with the neighboring reality or in the Pandemic that wiped out the population of the Abandoned City years ago.
● Characters may also see or interact with ghosts from their own or other characters' canons, providing the character in question is dead in canon and is not currently being played in the game.
● Canon-based ghosts should not be simply transplanted into the game as they were in canon - they are ghosts, and therefore 'not quite right,' and should not be used as an excuse to NPC a canonmate for a month. These ghosts are there to be used as plot devices to open up new avenues of CR, to create angst, to help a character make peace with their past, or other similar reasons.
● Ghosts should not be complete corporeal physical presences indistinguishable from living people, but barring this, how strongly the ghosts manifest and how much they can interact with the world around them is up to player discretion. Ghosts shouldn't be present the whole month straight, but can disappear and reappear at random times.

prompt iv: making memories

Since October 9th, the residents of the Quarantine have been having a stranger-than-usual experience that's been drawing them closer together (or pushing them apart). The machinery in control of the process that's used for canon updates has gone haywire and is releasing nanites that usually function to restructure characters' bodies to match the updated information. The nanites are doing something different, though - they're sharing memories between characters.

Memories can be shared in several forms:

First Person: This is experiencing another person's memory as if it's your own, seeing through that person's eyes in all its detail. This option wouldn't clearly expose the identity of the person whose memory is being viewed unless the memory includes that information specifically.
Dreamscape: Mostly happening during dreams or with shared flashes during the day, this is watching the memory as if it were a three-dimensional movie, during which you can meet and talk with the person whose memory is being viewed.
Network: These are memories shared through the network by accident, either as audio/video uploads or text-based descriptions transcribed to the network. These would be posted with the ID of the person whose memory is being shared.

● It is up to individual player preference how much feelings can be used in the memory, but knowing the other character's thoughts is not permitted.
● All memories must be from your character's canonpoint or earlier.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is accidentally sharing a memory, posting up a silly word game, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

Use the wildcard prompt to choose your own adventure and do whatever else you like in the setting!

Seriously, just keep your eyes on the jungle and this will be a cakewalk. If it's a bog-standard hydroelectric relay station, I could do this in my sleep and if it's even remotely like any of the other tech in this place? No problem. None.

[Rodney is barely even looking at his companion, and there's a good chance that, unless that companion is on a very short list of particular people, Rodney's already forgotten their name. Instead, he's chattering away, mostly out of nervousness. After all, he might be used to going out into the field with his team, wearing his gear, tablet strapped to his back, carrying a gun just like this, but that's with his team and not some suited up soldiers he's never met before. Who knows if they have the chops to protect him in the wild like this?]

I mean, this place is advanced, yes, even very advanced, and the way things have developed looks a little different but there's only so much you can do with hydroelectric, if you know what I mean...

[A pause, and a dry look.]

You don't, do you? Anyway-

[The latest sentence in his tirade is cut off by the abrupt arrival of some kind of gigantic thing that bursts out of the bushes, and all Rodney sees is a flash of reptilian hide before he's hefting his gun and darting for the cover of some bushes, making only a little squawk of distress before he's behind a tree trunk, only his eyes and the barrel of his gun visible.]

Whether she is a woman, a machine, or something in between, she's been doing a hell of a job. John's stopped looking behind him, keeping his eyes and ammo forward. Between the two of them, they've kept the area clear.

John sees her get bitten out of the corner of his eye, and turns just in time to watch her kick a monster into a far-off tree like a cross-field shot into a goal for the FIFA World Cup.]

[Rodney is lost in his work, barely cognizant of the world around him, as he tends to be when he's completely focused on the task at hand. Tablet plugged into the computer system of the power relay station, he's hunched over it, staring down at his tablet, tapping away furiously while he tries to read the code of whatever computer system is running this thing.

The monster attack and the dog-tank-creature's intervention register at about the same time, and he almost drops the tablet in surprise, whirls around and jerks his gun up off the ground, back to the wall, holding it in front of him. But he doesn't really end up having to defend himself, because the weird dog-shaped tank has done it for him.

It takes a long few moments to try to comprehend what's standing in front of him. It looks like a four-legged tank, but with what looks like a Labrador's head poking out of the top, the top of its cranium shaved and grotesquely implanted with some kind of barbaric machinery. It was definitely what took the snake out, and the creature's staring at him with that obviously triumphant doggy expression while proclaiming in a robotic voice that he's 'gud.'

It's beyond puzzling. It's a little horrific and yet fascinating at the same time.]

Um. Well. Yes. Good...good dog indeed. You...you did save my life, after all.

[A pause, and then.]

What are you?
1isbandit: (Gud dog)

[personal profile] 1isbandit 2017-11-04 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Bandit happily comes bounding up to Rodney. Seeing as how dogs are a bit incapable of being able to tell sarcasm or when someone might be being insincere, he takes the shocked words completely at face value. He'd finally done good, the way all dogs were supposed to be. Dogs were supposed to protect and love people. In return, they got love back and a home where they could feel safe. It was a wonderful system in place.

At the question, Bandit cocks his head to the side in a puzzled fashion. What is he? He's a dog, of course. Isn't that obvious? This man is silly!]

Bandit. Am dog. Who r u?
technospeak: (hopeless)

[personal profile] technospeak 2017-11-04 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
[In all honesty, it's less sarcasm than it is anxiety and an overwhelming sense of wrongness. Bandit, as he calls himself, is unnatural, there's no denying that. Now that the fight or flight response is draining out of him, leaving only that strange shivery feeling that comes with useless adrenaline, he can sort of see what's going on here.

It is, in fact, a dog. A dog that seems to be wired into some kind of suit of armor complete with guided missiles and razor claws and heaven knows what else. It's unethical and wrong and unnatural in a way that sets off nervy shivers up and down his spine, but the thing seems so weirdly sweet it's hard to be cold to it.]

Um. Rodney McKay. Or...or just Rodney if that's easier. Bandit. Good...good boy.

[Tentatively, he extends a hand to the dog.]

[ It's probably horribly disconcerting for Rodney to notice, whenever he cares to actually look at and take in his companion, that Ru isn't armed at all. He's dressed in some form of protective gear but it's light and, if he's being honest with himself, useless compared to what his body can take even without it.

If it really gets that bad, anyway, he'll just transform. There isn't as much need for secrecy here like there is being an anonymous hero back home. For what it's mostly worth, he takes in most of Rodney's ramblings for a while; science this advanced isn't his thing, but he's smart and can follow along with the basics of it, and understands what it is they're doing out here.

Except.

Except then there's an attack and Rodney is ducking away, and Ru is standing his ground and he glances over to the scientist before extending his hand and summoning a blade to it. First made of light before it solidifies into gleaming metal and silver, gorgeous blue highlights along the hilt and pommel. ]

You all right, Doctor?
technospeak: (camouflage)

[personal profile] technospeak 2017-11-04 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
[The truth is, it's pretty disconcerting to see someone unarmed and dressed the way his companion is, even moreso when Rodney is in full gear and carrying a weapon and he's the one who's meant to be protected. But the other man seems to be handling himself decently enough - standing his ground, facing the monster thing and glancing back at him before...producing...a sword.

How he does it, Rodney isn't sure. What he is sure is that it's some kind of advanced science he would really really like to study, and also that it looks unfairly cool, like something out of a fantasy novel. Especially when the guy looks over his shoulder and asks if he's okay.]

Well, I was okay until you jumped out like some kind of....

[It starts as a mutter and fades out to incomprehensible before he's lifting a hand.]

I'm fine back here. Let me know if you need, you know. Backup. I do have a gun after all, and I think that's got just a bit of advantage over a sword, even a glowing one...
1isbandit: (Pet 1)

[personal profile] 1isbandit 2017-11-04 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Perhaps fortunately for Bandit's state of mind, he's generally unaware just how unnatural he seems to other people and animals. He thinks that being put into a giant robotic suit and being turned into a weapon is just a natural thing that sometimes happens to dogs, no worse than how some dogs are groomed and made into show dogs.]

Rod-ney. O.K.

[Bandit takes a step hesitantly forward or two. His nose quivers as he takes in the scents on Rodney's hands. He smells like computers, a curious scent of chips, dust, and other parts that people have never had the capability to pick up on. There's also the usual human sweat and the scent of whatever soaps he's been using lately. He doesn't smell like the lab. Maybe he's good? Bandit licks his hand in a tentative fashion.]
knightsky: (Default)

[ Ru just quirks a brow at that, expression on the verge of laughter, and it occurs to him that it's been a long time since he's been in a proper fight without the veneer of Fortress. Hard to keep from admitting he doesn't enjoy the thrill at least partially when he isn't ready to hide his emotions. That's not how his compartmentalization works.

Even so, he shifts his position to something ready to move forward and nods to himself, to Rodney. ]

You want to play decoy? Or maybe wait and see if it's actually aggressive first?

[ Much as he'd love some exercise, the way of the world (and the uncertainties from such a foreign one he's now in) has him hesitating to assume the situation. He's watching as their interloper seems more distressed by the presence of people out here than outright angry. That doesn't mean it won't lash out sooner rather than later, though... ]

The Guard did want to point out that, as important as it is to keep expanding to accommodate all the new displaced citizens of Riverview, it is equally important to keep ourselves safe. [He emphasizes those last three words in a way that makes it sound particularly empathetic, despite the fact that everything in his attitude seems a little... playful and sarcastic.] So before heading out, make sure to read up on all the horrible ways the human body can be destroyed, and make a chart with friends of where you think those ways might be most likely. His hair has a streak of bright white through black, his eyes are deep violet, and he wears anything from pom-pom sweaters to faux-fur bellbottoms to baggy t-shirts with random words in english. Sometimes he wears cowboy boot sandals. Really, his fashion is a mess of styles and colors and he doesn't see a single issue with it.

Most interesting of all, when his sleeves allow it you may see the tattoos along his forearms. They are shaped like tentacles that seem to sway and curl in real time, never quite in the same position they were a moment ago. You may even manage to see one curl up in surprise if you manage to shock him.

Cecil can be found patronizing cafes and book stores, following stray cats with a camera, and sitting at random bus stops texting on his phone. If you're really lucky you might see him carving a picture of his own cat into a piece of wood, and excitedly showing it to anyone who shows interest.

[John's a team player. Really. It's just that he's used to playing for his team. After fighting side by side with the same unit for three years, old habits die hard. He's used to Teyla on his right, going hard hand to hand. Ronon on his left, with his blaster, putting a hole in anything John might miss. McKay at his back, doing what he does best, fiddling with something important to save the day at the last minute, and not a second sooner.

It's not that the people here are incompetent. By and large, they're skilled, competent individuals capable of handling themselves, and the mission, but they're not his people. Not yet. They haven't earned his trust, and he hasn't earned theirs. Hell, he doesn't know their names, never mind their strengths and weaknesses.

He's pulled off crazy stunts, sometimes by himself, but almost always with back-up. There's truth to the saying 'stronger together'. John wouldn't have believed it before Atlantis, but he's been drinking the Kool-Aid ever since. Not so willing to go at it alone. Or hadn't been.

One day out of the Pegasus galaxy, away from Atlantis, from home, and John's on his own again.

Some people might call it a backslide. Having been separated from the group, thanks to his own lack of communication, cornered, and pushed to the edge of a cliff, a free-fall might be more accurate.

He sprays his last P90 magazine into the closest monster, some venus flytrap looking nightmare with lashing tentacles, and switches to his Beretta. He's still got a knife, and a block of C4 rigged on the ground not too far from his feet, if that's what it comes down to.

Somehow, after everything, John hadn't expected to go out like this. Sad, stupid, and alone.]

[ Very suddenly, it's freezing.

Poe has traveled a lot. He's used to a lot of different climates. But he's a boy from a tropical moon and this place is also a tropical moon and geez he was not ready for that blast of frozen wind.

But there in the middle of the sudden blinding white and bitter frost is a familiar face. Several familiar faces. Their conversation comes into focus as Poe crosses his arms and tucks his hands under his armpits, trying to protect them from the cold.

Sanitation.

I don't.

I'm just here to get Rey.

The statements hit one after the other, more chilling than the wind. And then it's over, and there's Finn, and Poe stares at him, trying to process what he's just seen. It can't be real, even if he's heard rumors about what's been happening here. Memories, ghosts. This, though, this can't be something that actually happened.

Still, the first words out of Poe's mouth aren't Finn, how long have you been here or Buddy or a plain old happy greeting. The first words out of his mouth are quiet and loaded and he can't believe there's a need to say them. ]

[The mention of being a good boy makes Bandit's tail thump hard inside his suit, producing a muted sound like it's trying to escape the metal confines. His eyes crinkle up too and a little whine escapes his throat. It's been a long time since he's had anyone just treat him like the pet he once was. He missed this more than he can express with his limited vocabulary.

The implant is driven securely into his head and nervous system, but not so much so that it couldn't be removed if someone had the proper tools. Same with the suit. The real risk is just making sure that Bandit doesn't go into shock or that the suit harms him as it's being taken off.]

The lab. They r bad.

[It's a very big deal for a dog to call anyone bad. To declare a human being as such is declaring them anathema in dog terms, for then they're no longer to be considered like everyone else is. Bad people aren't really people at all to dogs.]

"Kind of," she says, teasingly. She can almost be grateful for her life being upturned before this whole adventure started. It's easier to be okay with it. Or pretend to be okay with it.

Even if here she can't call her parents, she can't text her friends. In a way she's even more alone than she was at Spenser. Sarah tightens her grip on Caleb's arm just a little. It's good, to have someone familiar. It's good, to have someone she can trust.

It's good that she's not alone. It's good.

So why does she feel uneasy again?

That does relax Finn, as much as he ever relaxes. A lot of people aren't big on lying, for obvious reasons, and while he respects that, he's not sure he's in the mood for... he's not even sure what, exactly. Rounds of judgement from strangers? Accusations?

Singular memories don't paint a full picture. He's done a lot of things that are hard to explain.

"The droid? That's BB-8. And we did get the motivator patched, but there wasn't time to get anywhere." The corners of his mouth flick upward, briefly, part exasperation and part fondness. "Everything that happened after that was a lot, too. We got about two straight days of 'a lot'."
