riverview: june test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on July 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: don't wake the deity

Whether you've just arrived in the city or you've been here a while, and you have a sensitivity to the spiritual, magical, multidimensional, or anything else outside the realm of everyday normal, you've probably noticed a distinct uptick in weird feelings, strange nightmares, or daymares - hallucinations of scary things that are lurking just behind you.

You're not the only one who's noticed it.

There are rumors going around that the psychological and spiritual disturbances are due to the emergence or re-emergence of a deity. Some people say that it's something new that's come through the portal with the sharp increase in new arrivals recently, and others say it's simply an ancient spiritual presence or some ancient incorporeal monster that's been somehow awakened. Gramarye, the top-tier magic research center in Riverview Quarantine, has been studying anyone who's felt this presence, and have recently confirmed that whatever it is, it's being fed by all the extra energies and prayers and thoughts as the city's population increases. The one thing everyone agrees on is that, if the expanding community is feeding the entity, then the entity has got to go! Teams are being assembled across the city to travel into the Abandoned City or the forests outside the walls and look for anything like an abandoned temple that can be destroyed or that contains a relic that can be broken or pacified by a ritual. You're looking for something that will solve the problem, or for other evidence of a way to solve it. The mission might be dangerous, though - there are the usual dangers of venturing out into the wilds, but this time, characters may also face booby traps, spectral or physical guardians, and if the entity itself gets awoken? Someone will have to kill it.

The mission is open to multiple teams, multiple deities can be named (both made up or from characters' various canons), and there can be multiple outcomes. If you complete the mission in a TDM thread, and all characters involved are apped and accepted, you can submit the completed mission thread to the exploration page once you are in the game!

prompt ii: monster miscalculation

The problems the city is having this month are not just ethereal - there's something a little more scientific stirring up trouble. Recently, a large research company in the Quarantine has been trying to develop a monster repellent to provide to explorers who are traveling outside the walls, in hopes of protecting them from attacks. Unfortunately, the containment unit used to store the repellent - which is still in its experimental stages, not even yet tested on animals, let alone people - completely failed, leaking the experimental repellent into the environment around the facility. This facility is close enough to the wall that the repellent has permeated the groundwater and soil in the area and leeched underneath the fences.

Even more unfortunately, the repellent seems to currently have an almost opposite effect on monsters than its intended purpose. It's attracted the attention of a large colony of carnivorous plants that has thrived just outside the wall for decades, living by attacking fellow monsters that are dumb enough to try the fence in that area. Now, instead of going for other monsters, the plants are drawn to the failed repellent and are climbing the walls in search of the source, craving more of it. Residents have been asked to both help clean up the tainted soil by the wall and to fight the carnivorous plants in that area.

The carnivorous plants are in the form of vines ranging from the thickness of a pinkie finger to nearly half a foot thick, that grow incredibly fast, writhing together to form thicker tendrils. The leaves are about a foot wide at their largest and have stingers around the edge that cause a painful rash, and the flowers are large and red or orange, capable of spitting thick globs of acid that can cause burns ranging from very serious (red) to moderate or mild (orange or yellow-orange). They can be defeated especially well with fire, extremely strong pesticides, and edged weapons - vines do not grow back once they've been cut.

prompt iii: wark games

The carnivorous plants aren't the only ones feeling the effects of the spilled experimental repellent. Recently, an intrepid team went on a mission after hearing rumors of a type of monster outside the walls that might be able to be tamed and used as valiant steeds. The team was successful and the possible steeds, which turned out to be Chocobos!

So far, the Chocobos have been comfortably in training, learning how to wear saddles and carry people, but once they get a whiff of the repellent in the air, or gotten a taste of it in their water, they kind of go a little off the wall. Or, over the fence, as the case may be. Highly energized and unwilling to listen, Chocobos who have been exposed to the repellent will get free of their pens and start stampeding around the city. Citizens, it's time to team up to tame the wild Chocobos! Let the wark games begin!

prompt iv: attraction repellent

The local wildlife aren't the only ones affected by the experimental repellent spill. While at first they didn't think it had any effect on sentients, they're having to start reevaluating that particular theory, because residents are definitely feeling it. Whether they're inhaling it in a gust of wind that smells disturbingly of ozone, or sipping a glass filled from a tap in the area of the spill and tasting something like chlorine, it's getting into residents' systems.

Once ingested or inhaled, the repellent can have two effects on an affected character: an overaffectionate mood, or an anti-social mood. The effects can vary in type, swinging from affectionate to cranky and back again at the drop of a hat, and they can also vary in intensity and manifestation - it all depends on body chemistry, both within an affected character, and in the interactions between two characters. So whether or not your characters liked or disliked each other beforehand, maybe their chemistries are very compatible or not compatible at all, and feelings might be a little...out of the ordinary.

Affectionate moods can range anywhere from a casual 'I love you man' to romantic or even carnal ideation; anti-social ones can range from being nervous around crowds or other people to being outright aggressive with other people. The repellent does not remove inhibitions and characters are able to control themselves. Emotions might be heightened, but these effects should not be used to facilitate things that would normally be completely out of character. Please put content warnings in subject lines.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Friendr base code is by photosynthesis.
The code in the textbox is for the default color scheme, but the Friendr app has a wide variety of themes, so feel free to customize with colors and patterns as you see fit, but do not remove the credit line out of respect for the creator of the code.

alkahestic: (and i wonder if you ever think of me)

alphonse elric - a tale of two dumb brothers (fma2003)

01. DON'T WAKE THE DEITY

[ upon arriving, al definitely felt as though something was off. the ground beneath him seems a bit strange, at least in terms of alchemical lines he can almost imagine. but it's more than that. for one thing, this isn't the place where he'd meant to arrive ( at least, as much as he knows about munich from his other self's dreams... ) and he can't find his brother anywhere ( at least that's not so new ).

it's troublesome altogether and while he meanders through the market, his perceptive ears pick up on a bit of chatter about exploring and pushing out whatever might be causing the strangeness. it's enough to get al to follow along, gloves on and hands at the ready to do something.

and then there's the snap- the sounds of branches breaking that make al whip around, red coat fluttering. he slaps his palms together and presses them against the ground, effectively transmuting himself a spear that's nearly as big as he is. it's in his hands and at the ready when whatever it is comes crashing through the underbrush. ]

03: WARK GAMES

[ okay, so this isn't quite what al signed up for. granted, he didn't sign up for anything, but he still never thought of himself as a... strange animal wrangler. at least he's been pretty successful. the majority have been rounded up in a makeshift habitat with walls of stone surrounding them. there's still one more left, and it's that one that al's after right now. ]

Hey-! Help me with this last one?

04: ATTRACTION REPELLENT
[ normally, al's not a very handsy guy. he's affectionate, sure. friendly, even. quite the gentleman, by all standards. but at the moment, he's feeling a bit... weird. a bit cranky. and the next person that walks by will be getting a dark, dark glare that would surely make his brother, ed, very proud. ]

Yeah, just keep walking. That's what I said, mister.

04. because I'm mean

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-06-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Ed hears the familiar sound of that voice before anything else, and at first he dismisses it. Between worlds where the gods played tricks and whatever weird coincidences he could come across, there was just no way he was going to let himself believe that Al was here.

Except that when he turns, he sees a very familiar red coat and long ponytail. A red coat that he had long ago stopped associating as his and started seeing only as his brother's.

There were no gods here, this was no trick. If Al felt displaced at all this is where he'd end up, that was the story, right? The name slips out before he can even catch himself, because he doesn't know what to say, and he's definitely not sure how he feels about finding his little brother here.]

Alphonse!

[He might have no idea that his younger brother is under the influence of the repellent, but even if he did it wouldn't change the fact that the older Elric is frozen firmly in place where he stands. Looking for all the world like someone that just saw someone they were ex-communicated from for a period of time, rather than a beloved little brother.

Should he turn around, the first thing Al would notice about his brother might be the lack of white and brown attire. He still looks older, like he did on that ship Alphonse was trying to follow him onto, but dressed in all black, white gloves covering his hands. His hair was pulled back in a braid rather than the high ponytail, but the fringe still framed his face as if he hadn't seen a haircut in a number of years and he seems... Tired in comparison to the brother Al saw after being separated for two years.]
alkahestic: ('cause now we say goodnight)

[personal profile] alkahestic 2017-06-30 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ he'd know that voice in his dreams. had heard it spoken to a stranger sharing his features. he's crossed deserts and mountain ranges to hear it, but when he finally had the chance to be reunited with that voice's owner, he'd slipped away. al had every intention of following him, leaped without knowing where he was going to land. but ended up here instead. now, as he freezes in his tracks, he tenses. unsure if he wants to turn around to see the person he's been searching for over the past two years.

curiosity gets the better of him. before he can stop himself, he does turn. and though ed looks more worn and weary than he remembers from where he stood atop that ship, encased in colonel mustang's arms, it's still his big brother.

eyes the color of mercury widen dramatically. it's ed. he propels himself forward through the crowd, all but throwing himself at ed. but if his brother is expecting a hug, that's not what he'll be getting.

instead, with the reflexes of a very. pissed off. elric, al throws out a fist with every intention of it connecting with ed's face. ]

Brother, you idiot!
alchemyfreak: (fma85)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-06-30 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
[He doesn't move as Al approaches, completely frozen with the sheer inability to process whatever he's even feeling at this point. Although as the other nears, golden eyes widen with the realization that his brother's approach is an aggressive one, and sure enough he's lining up to punch him square in the face.

Well, for one thing, Ed is aware that he deserves more than a punch from his little brother. For another, he's sure whatever it is that this Al is angry about that Ed definitely also did something to deserve his rage - because Alphonse does not get angry easily.

There's a flicker in his expression as he sees it coming, his body tensing in preparation to dodge on reflex alone, but something in his eyes sets as he stands perfectly still, waiting for the outcome of being decked by his brother.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time, but he didn't think he'd ever seen Al quite so angry before. Dodging hardly seemed like the better option.]
alkahestic: (when he catches his reflection)

[personal profile] alkahestic 2017-06-30 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ it's the way that ed tenses, freezing in place like he had moments ago that makes al quell his rage. before it can connect, his fist drops, along with his shoulders. something about his brother seems different. he knows ed well enough to catch these things. after all, hadn't they spent their lives together, pursuing the same goals? there had hardly ever been secrets between them and when they fight, it's always explosive. he doesn't want to fight ed now. not after all they'd lost and what they've gotten back.

( each other )

his features are still cross, however. and he still looks stern as his gaze roves over ed's features. now that he's up close, he can see just how world-worn his brother is and more so in comparison with the world-weary features he'd seen back in the sky above central.

that hurts. not because he believes he's due anything. not because he believes ed should feel guilty. he hurts for his brother, aches for him. as a result, and regardless of the strange irritation that ticks at the back of his mind, he reaches out and pulls his brother into a hug, should ed allow it. ]

How could you leave me behind like that?
alchemyfreak: (fma84)

[personal profile] alchemyfreak 2017-06-30 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[The first change is confusion. His gaze flickers as if something is off about the idea that Al suddenly doesn't want to punch him, rather than the other way around. His jaw his still tense, lips pressing together as he takes in his brother's appearance now that they were closer.

He remembers Al like this, but he knows that he's going to be a strange sight to his brother no matter what time frame he came from. When Al reaches forward a survival instinct in the back of his mind flinches, he was just about to punch him, after all. Still, he doesn't resist the hug, letting Alphonse pull him forward and even returning the motion despite the conflicting feelings fighting for the surface of his emotions.]

Al...

[His first instinct is to say he didn't have a choice. He was pulled into Purgatorium without his own knowledge and eventually, over the years wound up here - but he knew that wasn't what Al was referring to. Because the way these things worked, no one knows you leave from home. They'd seen it proven enough times with new arrivals, nothing changed as if their disappearances meant nothing.

Still, it was a question he asked himself all the time. If he'd been taken away from his home world like that, and given the chance to go back- why would he just deliberately throw it all away again? That didn't sound like him at all. Yet, Al had said it happened - that he'd followed after him after Edward left him behind - and here he was again repeating that same conversation, as far as he could tell.]

It's ... hard to explain.

[Really, he wasn't sure how else to start that conversation - but now that he spoke he also wasn't sure how to finish it. Hard to explain was... an understatement, and trying to tell someone you had no memory of the event they had just witnessed with you right beside them pretty much never went well. He was not looking forward to this.]
